Al Stewart is one of the most underrated singer song writers. His rise to the top of the charts in the early 70's due to extensive AM play of "Year of the Cat" has sort of sullened his reputation. But he is far from a pop singer.

In his song "Road to Moscow" he showcases his love of history - evident in many songs - form the perspective of a Russian Soldier in WWII.

The Clancy Brothers. What can you say. If you appreciate Celtic music, and I do, it doesn't get any better than this.

This a moving song about the casualty of war. I can never hear this, even the first bar with our getting goosebumps and moist eyes.

"And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda".

This song, "Hammerhead", was just released this month by 90's mall punk band The Offspring. It's not an emotionally deep song, but then it's important to remember that many wars (if not all) are fought by fearless, sometimes angry, young men who've not yet come to appreciate the full complexities of life and the world around them. One might even argue that perhaps because of this they, out of all members of society, are the most fit for the job of fighting for their country. Fight now, cry later.

Being a veteran and having fought in a war at the age of 19 and 20, I know what it feels like to be young, angry, passionate, afraid, innocent, confused, emboldened, and excited about doing ones duty. I had my music to listen to get me through it. Sad songs, hopeful songs, and angry raging songs. I'll never forget listening to Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song while rumbling a tank across the desert sands.

A song like this is one is for the troops. Imagine what it would be like for you to wake up everyday and face what they have to face. Sometimes you just need a loud but simple song that fits the fury of your situation and doesn't worry about the pain...something that gets you pumped up.

War is never pretty, or easy to analyze and categorize. Here is a little known story about immigrants to America forced to choose between faith and fealty, between the God of their fathers and the gods of war. The film clips [since deleted from youtube] are from "One Man's Hero".

Its a war song...Im not that redneckish that I dont recognize that this song could be..taken poorly by some. I just think it has a catchy beat.

Johnny Reb ~ Johnny Horton

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
You fought all the way, Johnny Reb

Saw you a-marchin' with Robert E. Lee
You held your head high tryin' to win the victory
You fought for your folks, but you didn't die in vain
Even tho' you lost they speak highly of your name, 'cause

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
You fought all the way, Johnny Reb

I heard your teeth chatter from the cold outside
Saw the bullets open up the wounds in your side
I saw the young boys as they began to fall
You had tears in your eyes 'cause you couldn't help at all, but

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
You fought all the way, Johnny Reb

I saw Gen'ral Lee raise a sabre in his hand
Heard the cannons roar as you made your last stand
You marched in the battle of the Grey and the Red
When the cannon smoke cleared, took days to count the dead, 'cause

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
You fought all the way, Johnny Reb

When Honest Abe heard the news about your fall
The folks thought he'd call a great vict'ry ball
But he asked the band to play the song Dixie
For you, Johnny Reb, and all that you believe

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
Yeah, you fought all the way, Johnny Reb

You fought all the way
Johnny Reb, Johnny Reb
You fought all the way, Johnny Reb

Christmas Eve 1914 is another folk song, by Mike Harding, commemorating the Christmas Truce in the first year of WW1. Lyrics can be found at
http://www.traditionalmusic.co.uk/folk-song-lyrics/Christmas... but it begins:

Christmas Eve in 1914, stars were gleaming, gleaming bright
And all along the Western front guns were lying still and quiet
Men lay dozing in the trenches, in the cold and in the dark
As far away behind the lines a village dog began tae bark

The version I know is by a group called Artisan http://www.parkhead.demon.co.uk/, as the final verse fades out, the sound of machine guns begins to punctuate the air... very atmospheric and moving.

Eddy

One of the best short songs of all time, bar none.

The Seaman’s Hymn
(A.L.Lloyd)

Come all you brave seamen
Where ever you're bound
And always let Nelson's
Proud memory go round.

And pray that the wars
And the tumult shall cease
For the greatest of gifts
Is a sweet lasting peace.

May the Lord put an end
To these cruel old wars
And bring peace and contentment
To all our brave tars!

The D-Day Dodgers

(Words: Anonymous; compiled and edited by Hamish Henderson.
Tune: Lili Marlene.

We're the D-Day Dodgers, way off in Italy
Always on the vino, always on the spree;
Eighth Army scroungers and their tanks,
We live in Rome, among the Yanks.
We are the D-Day Dodgers, way out in Italy;(2X)

We landed in Salerno, a holiday with pay,
The Jerries brought the bands out to greet us on the way.
Showed us the sights and gave us tea,
We all sang songs, the beer was free
To welcome D-Day Dodgers to sunny Italy.

Naples and Casino were taken in our stride,
We didn't go to fight there, we went just for the ride.
Anzio and Sangro were just names,
We only went to look for dames
The artful D-Day Dodgers, way out in Italy.

Dear Lady Astor, you think you're mighty hot,
Standing on the platform, talking tommyrot.
You're England's sweetheart and her pride
We think your mouth's too bloody wide.
That's from your D-Day Dodgers, in sunny Italy.

Look around the mountains, in the mud and rain,
You'll find the scattered crosses, some that have no name.
Heartbreak and toil and suffering gone,
The boys beneath them slumber on.
They are the D-Day Dodgers who stay in Italy.
