There are lots of references to popular television here.

But I want to know about the shows you enjoyed that get you nothing but raised eyebrows today. Did you like something everyone else hated? Was it so totally obscure that you seem to be the only one with a recollection of it ever existing? When you mention that you like it, do people ask you, "Why?"

Let's list and discuss!

Chopper One

In the same vein as "Adam 12," and before "S.W.A.T." or "CHiPs," this show limped through one half of a season in 1974. A police drama focused on a Southern California helicopter team, it featured Dirk Benedict as one of the chopper's crewmen.

An early project from TV production line Spelling-Goldberg Productions (yes, that's Aaron Spelling), it had the misfortune of being scheduled against ratings juggernaut "The Waltons."

The White Shadow

An early offering of Bruce Paltrow ("St. Elsewhere"), Ken Howard starred as a former NBA basketball star whose career was cut short due to injury. He's hired by an old friend to coach basketball at an inner city high school, where he mentors and shapes the lives of his initially-rebellious minority students.

The over-arcing story got predictable (starting as a team of misfits, they would win the city title in the second season), and the episodes became increasingly preachy over time. But the show was still a lot of fun to watch as a youngster. When most of the original cast "graduated" after season 2, the show lost a lot of its impetus, and it did not survive its third year.

EDITED to correct reference credit.

Forever Knight

This syndicated drama centered on Nick Knight (Geraint Wyn Davies), a vampire under hire by the Toronto Police Department. For 3 seasons, he solved crimes while trying to come to grips with his inner struggle to become mortal once again.

A well-made show, overall. It made sure that it would never be continued, as all of the major characters were systematically killed off over the last episodes. A brilliant series finale.

Marker

Another syndicated series. This one had an interesting concept of quid pro quo woven into the theme.

Richard Grieco plays an independently wealthy man with a penchant for altruism. His wealth was obtained by inheriting his father's fortune, along with his legacy of numerous "markers" left with people of character. As Grieco's character helps the current episode's character in need, he calls in some of these markers to aid him in his adventure. In the end, the recipient of Grieco's assistance would also receive a marker, which may be called in at a later date.

It only survived one season, but it was one of the most unique premises I've seen on television.

Brimstone

Peter Horton plays a cop who's gone to Hell for the murder of the man who raped his wife. The devil, always willing to make a deal, offers Horton's character (Stone? Slade?) a second shot at life if he can round up a gang of fugitive souls who have returned to earth to wreak criminal havoc.

Great acting, well-written backstories (since it was not really a serial, ep-to-ep repetition was hard to avoid), and novel-at-the-time cinematography. I think the idea's been redone, no doubt significantly less well, but I wouldn't know since I haven't really watched TV since it went off the air.

Especially notable for John Glover's Devil, among the best ever performed.

When I was in college, this was the only show I would make sure to take a break from my studies to watch. The first story arc (Sonny Steelgrave) was a work of genius. The second (Mel Profitt) introduced many to the acting brilliance of Kevin Spacey.

The show would continue to bring in excellent acting talent, including Fred Thompson (Law & Order), Paul Guilfoyle (CSI), Stanley Tucci, Ron Silver, Jerry Lewis, Tim Curry, Paul Winfield, Robert Davi, Steven Bauer, Maxmillian Schell and Billy Dee Williams.

The series ran 3 strong seasons. But with Ken Wahl leaving the cast, the fourth season lost most of the show's viewers, and did not survive the full run.

Frank's Place

This short-lived pseudo-sitcom really stands out in my memory, although it didn't last very long. Starring WKRP's Tim Reid, it was about a college professor who inherits a restaurant/bar in New Orleans. It was funny, but it wasn't really a comedy. There was a voodoo strain running through it, and the show had a kind of surreal quality to it ... A unique show that, typically, flopped with mass audiences.

Oh the pain, Oh the pain!!!

Oh how much I loved this show as a kid!! And yes, I just finished up season I on DVD, and yes, I still love it. Not many shows stand the test of time from childhood, but still I love this show. Unfortunately, it lost its edge after season I, but who really cares?

I love the banter between Dr. Smith and the Robot, especially when the robot says something sarcastic and makes that obnoxious laughing sound afterward.

Tales of the Gold Monkey

This was a 1982 show trying to feed off the newly discovered love of 30's and 40's serials after Raiders of the Lost Ark was released. It featured Jake Cutter, the pilot of a Grumman Goose seaplane in the South Pacific during World War II. Jake runs an air cargo delivery service, but each week finds himself in a mess, often involving Japanese soldiers or German spies.

To the shame of the producers, most of the Japanese characters were actually white people dressed up in thick makeup. Only a few Japanese actors were actually cast for the roles, although this was a fairly common practice in late 70's early 80's Hollywood.

Still, the show lives on in my memory and eventually served as the model for the disney animation series, Talespin. (Which I also loved.)

Nightingales

Sitcom in which three security guards while away the night shift in bizarre ways at the top of a high rise office block. The comedy was surreal and dark, and seemed to take place in a fantasy world. Some scenes played as though in Shakespearian dramas.

Characters like Swan the werewolf medical student, and Terry Oblong. Characters being made to build dry-stone walls in an office to win a competition. Mary arriving on Christmas Eve to give birth to a goldfish, the Pope and Harold Pinter sharing a tandem, Carter needing psychiatric help after raping a horse, etc.

A fourth night watchman, Mr Smith, had been dead for three years, but the others had kept quiet about his death so that they could share his wages.

The three security guards were quite at home in this off-centre environment and took most of the surreal happenings in their stride. The eldest member of the trio was Sarge, a friendly, optimistic man with the air of a friendly uncle. He was completely happy with his position - unlike his cohorts, the articulate but frustrated Carter, and the dense and violent Bell. Carter wanted more out of life whereas Bell's disposition was naturally grumpy and easily provoked.

Cowboy in Africa

This starred Chuck Connors as an American cowboy transported to Africa to use his riding and roping skills on the animals there. I distinctly remember playing football in the street on a Sunday afternoon, then my Dad coming out and yelling that "Cowboy in Africa is coming on" and everyone dashing home to catch the latest episode, it was that popular. Yet today I know of no-one who can recall this little gem - I'm beginning to believe I dreamt the whole thing!

Nowhere Man 1995

"My name is Thomas Veil, or at least it was. I'm a photographer, I had it all: a wife, Alyson, friends, a career. And in one moment, it was all taken away, all because of a single photograph. I have it; they want it; and they will do anything to get the negative. I'm keeping this diary as proof that these events are real. I know they are... They... have to be."

Nowhere Man is the tale of a photojournalist named Thomas Veil. After leaving to use the restroom while out to dinner with his wife, Tom returns to find that his life has been "erased." His wife doesn't recognize him and is living with another man. His ATM cards no longer work. His best friend turns up dead. His mother was previously recovering from a stroke, so she is incapable of confirming his existence. In the course of a single evening, every trace of Tom's identity has been erased.

Tom comes to believe his erasure is related to a photograph he took a year earlier called “Hidden Agenda.” The photo depicts four men being hanged in South America by what appear to be US soldiers. The only shreds of evidence Tom has of his past are the negatives to that photograph. A mysterious organization covertly pursues Tom in search of the negatives. Over time, Tom's paranoia builds as he comes to realize that nothing is what it seems to be, no one is safe from this organization, and even he may not be who he thinks he is.

I loved this show. It was clever, intense and a constantly changing mystery. It's unfortunate that it only lasted one season.

Fridays

This late night sketch comedy show appeared on ABC for 2 years. It gained much popularity as "Saturday Night Live" was waning. But ABC's decision to broadcast the news show "Nightline" 5 nights a week forced back "Fridays" start time, and the show lost viewership. An abortive attempt to air it on prime time put it up against soap opera king "Dallas," and the comedy show was then no more.

The ensemble cast included Bruce Mahler (Sgt. Fackler from the Police Academy films), Melanie Chartoff (Principal Musso in "Parker Lewis Can't Lose"), Michael Richards ("Seinfeld"), and Larry David ("Seinfeld," "Curb Your Enthusiasm").

Friday the 13th: The Series

Very cool horror series, filmed in Canada, about a group of cursed artifacts, and the trio of people who task themselves with finding them. This show was particularily gruesome, and would only be shown on cable today (it was originally syndicated.) All the artifacts have a benefit to the user, with the trade off that an act of evil must be done with them. The best episode dealt with a glove that healed with a touch. Another person must then be touched to be killed by the disease or wound. That episode was directed by David Cronenberg. Several episodes were directed by Atom Egoyan!

Lasted maybe one season on CBS in the early 90s.
Three adopted brothers dress nattily in coats ties and hats to take on the baddies and help people in need.
Their Dad was a either a retired police sergeant, or still on active duty.
A good series with good stories.
Someone could turn out a DVD of the entire run in a blink people would buy it (maybe).

Chorleton and the Wheelies.

A dragon with a northern accent, living within a village of talking roller-skates, as far as memory serves, fighting off grief from a witch who lives in a distant castle.

Typical fair for a British childhood, and possibly the only seventies TV show not to feature in Operation Yewtree thus far... Although I have friends who swear this show never existed, and I've feverishly dreamed the entire thing.
