Magic: The Gathering appeared in 1993 and took the gaming hobby by storm. Naturally this inspired imitators, but designing, developing and producing CCGs took some time, especially because of the heavy investment in artwork.

A few games managed to appear in 1994 but it was for Origins in 1995 that the floodgates really opened, with at least 28 Collectible Games in the event booklet in some way, either advertised or in the event program, with 18 or 19 being new that year.

Some were pretty blatant riffs off the Magic: The Gathering idea, others were quite innovative. But today, more than a dozen years later the main thing they have in common is that they are largely forgotten, or nearly so, while Magic: The Gathering is still going strong.

Or at least so I thought, when I did a posting on Redemption and asserted it was just about the only survivor. Fans of some other games let me know that my pronouncements of their demise was premature. Still, it's pretty clear that none of the initial wave of competitors seriously challenged M:TG for its status of the premier CCG. And judging from what I see offered for sale in game shops, most did, indeed, fall by the wayside.

So where are they now? Are they still played. Will they still be played in another dozen years?

Here's my list of 1995-ear CCGs, taken from a copy of the Origins 1995 convention booklet (The con took place July 13-16 in Philadelphia) and my assessment of their current state as follows:

Thriving: Fully supported, often played and still recruiting new players

Living: Still played on occasion, still supported by its maker with new content, but struggling to recruit new players.

Declining: On its way out. It may still have new content and company support, but clearly not appealing to new players.

Archiving: No longer sees new content, but some devoted fans still play it. May still see occasional play a dozen years from now from its fans.

Decomposing: "It's Dead, Jim" No longer supported. Not played now and maybe never did see much play.

Please feel free to contest my assessment, but provide evidence.

The first and still the champion.

This fantasy-themed game saw 1,076 plays logged this month on BGG (May 08), which is more in one month than all but one of the other CCGs listed have in total. It's logged 43,283 BGG plays.

Originally known as Jyhad, this Vampire-themed game saw 32 played logged this month, adding to its respectable total of 2,453. This one first appeared in 1994 and it was a Garfield design from Wizards of the Coast, which gave it considerable visibility in 1995.

New in 1995, this martial arts-themed game seems to be one of the more successful of that year's class, although I'm not personally aware of any players. Still, it has 6 recorded plays this month and a total of 1,023 which makes it the third most-played of the 1995 class on BGG.

The only collectible game in 1995 that wasn't card-based, Dragon Dice seems to have a small, but devoted following. 23 plays were reported this month, for a total of 428.

Update: The game is back in print under a new publisher, revised rules and a different marketing/packaging strategy.

The game that inspired this list, Redemption was also new in 1995 and has managed to maintain a steady presence ever since, although perhaps flying under the radar screen of most gamers. It's marketed mostly through Christian retailers, so far as I can tell, rather than game distributors. It had 6 plays reported on BGG this month and has a total of 63 BGG logged plays. It still has full company support with a new expansion about to be published.

One of the few historically themed CCGs, BGG lists all three Dixie sets (Bull Run, Shiloh and Gettysburg) as 1994 games, but the only one in the 1995 program is the Bull Run version. It has a total of 100 plays recorded on BGG, but none this month. Cards are still available from the publisher however, and the uniform and OB data inherent in the card collection give this game a little extra collectibility in my opinion.

This is listed as a 1996 game but this licensed game based on the movie did have a tournament in the 1995 Origins booklet, so the evidence suggests that it should be listed as a member of the class of 1995. It has 46 BGG logged plays, but none in May.
