I'm a wargamer. I've been drawn to the genre since I started gaming in my teens. What I like about wargames are the conflict and the history. I like playing a game and at the end having the feeling that I've explored a part of history and come away with a better understanding of why events happened. Why they came out the way they did, the choices the leaders had and perhaps an understanding of how things could have gone differently.

Now I think there are plenty of people out there who feel the same way but at the same time just aren't into the military aspect of the wargaming hobby. That's all fine. Not everyone has an interest in the Civil War, WW II and things of that nature. That doesn't mean that the person doesn't like a good strong historical simulation. Just that they aren't interested in military history.

In recent years there has been a growing number of games coming out that appeal to this segment of the hobby. Games that are historical simulations with strong conflict but not wargames.

So that's the basic premise of this list. We're looking here for games that are historical simulations (no eurogames) with strong conflict but aren't about war. Feel free to add your own games to the list but keep those two important parameters in mind.

I just received this game today and it's pretty much the inspiration for this list. The game uses sort of a variation of the card driven wargame system. An interesting concept and from the looks of it a great game. I look forward to playing Tricky Dick in my first game.

Perhaps the most popular of the non war historical simulation type games. While some folks argue about whether this game is a true wargame it definitely is in terms of it's mechanics. It's also a wonderful historical simulation.

The classic Richard Berg game from the 70s that's an old favorite of mine. This new remake is suppose to use a very similar system as Blackbeard. The game is currently is in playtesting and set to be published through GMT. I almost posted the original but I figured I might as well use the new version as folks are starting to talk about it and we're seeing a lot of talk about it over on Consimworld.

The classic Avalon Hill game. Perhaps the most popular of the old Avalon Hill games still not reprinted or planned to be reprinted. Sadly my copy didn't survive my cross country move years ago and I've never been able to get another copy.

Wonderful game. Classic game. Had a rulebook that you needed to pass the bar to understand. Ok, maybe not that bad but it definitely had a steep learning curve. I use to play this one a lot back in Sacramento and I'm really looking forward to the Valley Games reprint.

First off, let me say that I own this game but have not played it. However, this game has quite an enthusiastic following.

I don't know if you would consider this an historic simulation in that it simulates evolution. But it is a simulation and it isn't a wargame.

Brian, we must have woken up on the same wave length today, Brian. This trend was one of the major points in my review of Dos de Mayo (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/317799). As I mentioned there, Garibaldi is a really good illustration of this sort of game. The chrome and the historical detail are quite rich. But the mechanics are straight from the classic Euro, Scotland Yard.

This is a close one on your list. Its definitely full of history. It has direct conflict, but it might be a little too war-ey. Its really about a popular uprising, and is not a battle per se. But, it also has a certain hybrid feel to it. In that sense, its like Bowen Simon's games. They are wargames, just not as we have usually conceived them.

This is honestly an area control game with a lot of interesting quirks. In many ways, its a Euro before Euros. But, if you have never tried it, seek it out. You can get a copy relatively cheaply, and it has held up well. I played in a tournament a couple of WBCs ago.

Another Wallace entry. He is certainly a designer interested in the intersection between historical gaming and Euro gaming. The history in most of his titles tends to be more notional and abstracted, but its still there.

D'oh another obvious addition that I overlooked. Lots of history, but more of a tech tree game. Conflict to be sure, but the warfare is very much abstracted. A fine game and an ambitious design.

That, of course, reminded me of a more recent, and also well received Eklund design. This is another civilization building game. To be sure, it has a unique twist because we are really talking about the dawn of civilization and human community, but a civ game nevertheless.
