For some of us, game length is a huge consideration in buying games and choosing what to play on a given day. Many features of life can limit our gaming time.

For me, it's family life that hinders game time. My wife and I rarely have more than an hour to sit down and play a game. We currently have three children under the age of five. Enough said.

So, what games in your collection would you play more often if it weren't for the amount of time it usually takes to finish?

And if you like, feel free to share what it is that is limiting your play time.

My wife and I like to play through our collection alphabetically. On our recent play cycle, I noticed that we had stopped playing. Days and weeks were going by with no plays. The reason: it was Lost Valley's turn. It was just too hard to find a window with enough time to fit in a play. Lost Valley typically goes over an our. On top of play time, you have a very busy setup and cleanup because of the massive load of bits. We store them all in resealable bags for organization. Playing this game is pretty big production for us. So, if there isn't a big chunk of time, we don't play it.

This is one of the longer games in our collection. I knew there was risk of few plays when I bought it. Sure enough, we rarely get Pillars on the table. It is difficult to fit a game into an hour, even when you play quickly. I really wish that the designers would have figured out how to shave the same game down to an hour-long game.

(It certainly doesn't help that after a long play of Pillars, the person with the Woodworker tends to win...)

My first thought was of some really long playing games in my collection that I'd like to see on the table more often (Republic of Rome, Dune, Die Macher), but to be honest those games aren't getting played mostly because of a lack of players (and, secondarily, a lack of time).

But Twilight Struggle is a game that I could get my wife to play, if only we could both find the time. But including setup and cleanup, it just takes too long for us to get a full game in, given that our daughter is almost two. Also, we're expecting twins in early September, which is only going to make gaming time even scarcer.

Of course, my grand plan is that all three kids will grow to be gamers, and so eventually, neither time nor a lack of players will be an issue even for games like Republic of Rome. Ah, a family game of Republic of Rome -- it brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

An hour is too long for you? Light weight! I finally got to try this out over the weekend. It took nearly 2 hours to set up and explain (owner used a preset map) and ten hours for the six of us to play. That's way too long.

I have no doubt that I will play many, many games of TtA regardless, but the length--particularly when teaching new people--makes this fantastic game sometimes a lower priority than it would otherwise be. It's a good 3 hours even with 3 people who know what they're doing, and when most of the players are new, well! I had a game of it just Sunday with myself and 3 first-timers that took nearly 8 hours. While this is an anomaly, it does show why TtA will not be my first choice at every opportunity; sometimes, I'd rather get more than one game in!

This is my other "If only it were shorter" game. I love AH, especially once I've piled in all the expansions, but it can take a loooong time, especially if you're actually reading all the cards out loud and not just rushing through things. Especially when you're getting up above 4 players, AH can easily take 4 or more hours.

I think that what is even more frustrating about AH, for me, is that it takes FOREVER to set up and tear down. With innumerable stacks of cards to shuffle, bits to arrange, etc., it can be annoying to have the game be so long you can only play it once. (And with a small apartment and several pets, leaving it up on a table for future plays isn't an option.) I've done what I can to shorten setup/take-down time (such as putting the bits into large pill organizers and using dice for stamina/sanity instead of the bits), but this is still a lengthy game with an annoying amount of prep time, which has kept it from getting played very much since New Years (when we were on vacation in a cabin where we COULD leave it up for days on end).

The length doesn't deter me, but it deters enough of my potential opponents that I can rarely get a game. It's not really too long, nor is it too bad of a game. It's just, for most people, not good enough for how long it is.

Build, pickup, deliver, repeat. Unfortunately, try as I might, it's hard to come up with a way to make it shorter without altering too much of the strategy. If you require only money as a victory condition, then you have to be really stingy with your track-laying. If you require only city connections, then it lessens the importance of making a distance-efficient track layout, which could allow a player who was behind in connecting the cities to catch up if they could make deliveries faster on their completed network.

Without a doubt this is the game. We actually have it down to 3 and a half hours, but finding five people to play is a chore.

Actually five people to play a long game isn't bad, it's finding five people we don't have to TEACH it to that makes it really bad.

It takes almost 30 to 45 minutes minimum to teach it to someone, and thye are still at such a disadvantage not knowing how things affect each other down the road that the first game is pretty much an observational excercise.

I LOVE this game and really wish I got to play it more.

I think what I lvoe is that it's not so much of a "long-term" strategy game as it is a long linking chain of multiple "short-term" strategies.

Did that last bit make ANY sense? I doubt it.

Anyways. I love this insanely long game. Watch the Board games with scot video for it. It's GREAT!

First thing I thought of when I saw this list. This game has an innovative combat system, and an even more innovative levelling/skills system, and it looks great, but it's soooooooo long.

Even playing turns simultaneously we took 5 hours to finish.

For us it's Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers. Yes, I know the playing time listed is only 45 minutes, but for us--playing 2-player--it has never been less than 2 hours!! Mystery Bob has lots of analysis paralysis, plus in this game we both like to try out ALL possible locations for the tiles.

Another minus has been ATROCIOUS tile draws that have given Mystery Bob landslide wins. Spending two hours playing a game to win/lose by an enormous margin--despite our evenly-matched abilities--is not fun and seems like a waste. We want to play again with the 3-tiles in the hand variant to lessen the luck of the draw, but have not found a good 2-hour window to bring this one out again!

Why don't we have 2 hours for a game? Easy, we both work and have a 7-year old who wants/needs our attention (no, she won't play as she HATES the game!!) During the week we don't have time after work, and on the weekend we both have our chores inside and outside of the house plus spending quality time with our child. After that, and if we're not TOO tired, we might have time to squeeze in a game (or two).

If we could play this in 45 minutes, we would play much more often!

I was excited about this, traded for it, sat down to learn it with my gaming group. Half an hour later we had set it up, I had read through the rules previously, and we got started. An hour and a half later, we were still just barely starting, had already identified 2-3 ways we hadn't been playing by the rules, and we hadn't really gotten anywhere. It hasn't come back out since. Seems like a fun game, just way too long. I can't even imagine keeping your characters over multiple scenarios and building them up...

Another game I traded for with high hopes. We never ended up getting it on the table; I guess I missed that 180 minutes playing time on the game page. My wife hates Risk, but I bet she would play this with me if it weren't so long. Alas, it has since been traded for other games, which I'm sure we play more often, although I can't remember exactly what I traded it for. In my gaming group, we like to play 2-3 games in a long gaming night, so a 3+ hour game just won't cut it. Probably 90 minutes is about the max, maybe 2 hours for a learning game.

This one isn't that long a game, per se... A frigate duel can be over in 30 minutes with fast players... however, a typical starbase assault is going to be 10-15 ships versus 5-8 + a starbase, and for maximum combat potential, cruiser heavy, with a carrier group as the command ship so that the escorts don't count against command limits.....

Given that starbase assaults run 12-50 turns, say, 1-2 min per ship for EA, and 15min per turn... a fast group is looking at 6 hours. A slow group, 5-10 min per ship for ea, only two players, and 30-60 minutes a turn... you can wind up with several weeks of 5 hours a day.

But the general lack of speed is why Federation Commander was published... making SFB play fast enough for the new generation.
