I drove down to pueblo on a sweltering Colorado night to visit wade in his first game night since his new addition and I must say we had a great time. I got to see the new baby.(cute thing takes after his mom). Play a lot of fun games and just enjoy good companionship.

First game of the night and one that had fallen off our play list after being overplayed by us.

I drew New Sparta and Wade Earth Colony. We then commenced and playing one of the most bizarre games we’ve ever played. He went for a massive development strategy and I went for a military one. Neither consume nor produce were ever played and wade won 26 to 20.

Race is a fun fast game but it has defiantly been overplayed by us. It feels that the person with the most skill wins until you hit a point. Then if both players are equally skilled then it just feels like the player who drew the best card wins.

A game I had to convince Wade to play. For valid reasons why would you ever want to play a game when my inital description was "Well its like a game of super tidlywinks with bugs"/

After denverarch's initial reluctance was overcome we had a great deal of fun with this. I played the evil yellow cyborg bug army and he played the Russian workers army. And the sh*t uhmm bugs really flew with my innate skill and superior bug tactics coming out in the end. I blew up all three of his bases while he only managed to damage one of mine.

It was his first game at it and by the end trash talk was flowing and we were laughing and having a good time. This is a greatly underappreciated gem and I think if you’re looking for a fun, light dexterity game you should check it out.

The next game on the list for the night was wades "grail" game that he finally got. It was my first time playing, but since vie played a lot of CDG's I didn’t think I would have a problem picking up the rules on this one.

Wade let me play the Americans as a handicap since this was my first game. And I promptly lost anyways.

My genius strategy was to control the south which I did and held through the entire game, What I didn’t get in the first game was how many colonies are clumped together in the north...I know I know basic geography could of told me that but it looked like I owned so much of the map that it just didn’t occur to me until close to the last turn that the British had 6 till I looked closer and by then it was too late. The net result was British 6 colonies exactly and the Americans the rest. So in our alternate world the US stayed part of GB and we ended up speaking German later...At least that was my somewhat bitter comment to wade at the end.

All in all a great addition to our 2 player game night. And one that will definatly go into the rotation. Its Hanibal light IMHO and thats a good thing. My only beef on this one and its the same beef that I have with Hanibal is the card combat system. I hate it. I understand the reasons and can thematicly justify it. Just dont enjoy it all and battles always come off as anti-climatic too me.

A favorite of mine and one that ive honed my skills against the computer on using the great free download of the game. In this one Wade was at a disadvantage from the start.

I started with an aggressive move to the right with an infantry at base followed by a heavy weapons to the right while wade started with a tank at his base and a paratrooper in my rear area. This was about the highlight of wades game as I quickly move up the right flank with a mix of infantry and SF. Until the game mercifully ended with a quick artillery strike on his base followed by a SF assault.

I really dig this one and has had the most bang for the buck of most of my game a real fun light card game that has a theme that really fits even thought it could have been about almost anything.

How could a game night not include at least one dice fest and this was the one of choice.

I was the Red team and Wade the Blue. I made a real fast score with my wide receiver and all I had to do was evade one tackle and roll 19 twice . The next score wasn’t as easy as wade changed tactics and just decided to kill as many players as he could. This worked will for awhile until a nice quick pass to my running back and one of my last remaining players scored the second touchdown and won the game.

Battleball is not a game to be taken too seriously but is great for what it is a quick beer and pretzel game with really awesome bits. Its bloodbowl with out the minutia or time commitment. Worth your while if you like football, have kids or just want to relax.

Another light war game and one that has become a favorite. We usually get at least one game of this every time we get together.

I played as the Russians while wade played the ottomans. I quickly got 4 kills and was cruising to what I thought was going to be an easy victory but the chaos and unpredictability of war set in and I missed two or three crucial assaults on some very crucial ottoman Calvary and then the tide turns and I ended up losing to the ottomans Calvary onslaught near twilight.

A game that should be a staple for a lot of people for many a years to come. Manoeuvre is a light war game/abstract that has enough variability to keep it entertaining and quite a bit of depth for such a "light" game.

The next to last game of evening. One that neither of us had played in awhile.

This ended up as a draw and we called it after about 30 minutes. It was a stalemate with neither player able to get an upper hand. Don’t remember a whole lot as it was getting close to 1 am.

This is a very good abstract game and is a brain burner. It really needs to be played when both players are mentally fresh however. I would recommend it to all abstract fans.

And the final game of the evening requested by wade himself. We played another game of tiddlywinks.

It was the American bugs played by wade versus the econo bugs played by me. With the Americans killing the main bases with only damage to there own.

Overall a very good night of gaming. It started at 1830 and didn’t end till 0130. I had a great time and I believe wade did too.
