I was always a big fan of the X-Men, and there was always one character that stood out to me. Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin was such a lovable and sensitive man, yet his mutant powers make him such an amazingly powerful person.

SPIDER-MAN

I totally adored the old Spider-Man comics. The way that Peter Parker balanced humor with his enormous overload of responsibilities made for such a great story. Of course the whiney Tobey Maguire has basically emasculated this character for an entire generation of children, but perhaps the comics are still carrying on the strength of the original character.

No contest - Shade the Changing Man.

Originally a (very) minor Ditko character who ran for 8 issues, Shade was reimagined in the early 90s, and was one of the original "mature reader" titles at DC which led to the seminal Vertigo imprint along with Sandman, Hellblazer, Swamp thing and Animal Man.

Pete Milligan wrote the entire 70 issue run through the 90s, along with a bunch of very talented artists, most notably Chris Bachalo.

A beuatiful, challenging, surreal story with a beginning, a middle and an end.

Only the first story arc (concerning the assasination of Kennedy!) has been collected, but the later issues tend to be really easy to find in 50 cent bins . . .

Try it - you might like it!

My favourite comic and the only one I've been collecting is 100 Bullets by Azarello/Risso published under Vertigo///DC.

However my favourite comicbook character?!
Hehehehe easy:

CAPTAIN BRITAIN! Magnificent powers......But only within the United Kingdom....Hmmm, so quite uneffective with regards to the world in general...Still, he could arrest some happy slappers and underage drinkers I guess...

I'm not as big into comics as I used to be in the eighties ... but I was a huge First Comics junkie. I loved Nexus, Badger, Grimjack, the Moorcock Eternal Champion books and even Jon Sable.

It'd be hard to pick one character, or even one series ... but for me nothing beats the first 12 issues of American Flagg!

Luther Ironhart, Raul, Jules Folquot, Medea Blitz, Bob Violence ... all so very cool. But I guess I'll go with the lead man himself; ex-porn star now reluctant government cop, Reuben Flagg.

As it was near future dystopia from the eighties I imagine it comes across as dated and naive to someone reading it for the first time now; but to me in 1983 it was exciting, creative, irreverent, innovative, subversive and just puerile enough.

Unfortunately the comic degrades and loses focus after twelve issues ... but that first story arc is one of the best things ever printed on pulp paper. And I'm really not a big fan of the rest of Chaykin's stuff that I've read so go figure.

Bojemoi!

Two-way tie:

Uncle Scrooge (Scrooge McDuck), as done by the late, great Carl Barks, and so must be considered "ended", alas. I was raised on these comics, and they still almost define the word "adventure" to me. Scrooge had the most marvelous journeys, and only much later did I learn that Carl Barks got most of his settings from National Geographic magazines. I just knew Scrooge went to the most exotic locales and had such great adventures I felt I was along. George Lucas has said he got the opening boulder scene of the first Indiana Jones movie from a Barks' Scrooge adventure, so I'm not the only one who's been inspired by these stories.

And still in print:
Usagi Yojimbo. Amazing series, and Stan Sakai does the story, dialog, pencil work, inking, and lettering himself. A couple of years ago I had an operation and spent a lot of time recuperating in bed. During that week I reread the entire Usagi Yojimbo series in order, almost twenty years worth of material. It absolutely engrossed me and blew me away all over again.

Good job they have the magic potion.

That's why Obelix and Dogmatix were always my favourites. Much dumber than Asterix (bit like Groo) but he has Dogmatix to help him out and get him to where he should be giving them that special bond.

My sentimental favourite title is The Legion of Super Heroes. The old school one. From before the 5 Year Gap and the myriad reboots. All those members, and all those powers. It's great stuff, especially for the kid I was when I discovered them.

But ironically, the member I liked the most was Karate Kid, the only one without a real super power. The fact that a non-powered human could 'hang out' with a bunch of super powered folks and not seem out of place was enthralling.

I will forever recall this one scene. I can't remember the villain, but he captured a bunch of the heroes and bound them in "power dampeners". Yeah, a contrived plot device to be sure, but it's just a comic. KK was one of those captured. When he came to, he just simply broke free by sheer force of will -- no silly technology could overcome his indomitable spirit.

The lesson I got from him is "anything is possible with enough dedication", and it's a lesson I'm trying to teach my young son.

...and then Keith Giffen, who's work I usually love, decided that Karate Kid wasn't worth the ink needed to render him, so set out to kill him THREE TIMES. Now that's just excessive. I wonder what Mr Giffen was overcompensating for...

I had stoped a bit after his death (Superman #75) and I have lost touch with the series for a while.

I guess I always loved him because he has a high level of honesty and fights for justice. A kind of Paladin of the modern days (kind of...)

Daredevil. All of the angst, grief, and responsibility of Spider-man, with half of the superpowers and double the vulnerability. Daredevil's great because he balances very real life problems with his double life, and his super-power stems from a devastating weakness. No super-strength or rapid healing... just very keen senses. Not only that, but he fights crime in both identities... by day as an aggressive litigator and by night as a vigilante. I also always liked that he was tied to a very small part of the world, rather than being a globe-trotting hero.
