So I decide to go to GenCon this year, as it happened to be in Australia for the first time.

Unfortunately, it was in Brisbane, Queensland. which is a very long walk from Adelaide, so I decided to take the plane instead. I was going to go with gaming buddy, Mr. Lunch, but he had a personal emergency and had to bail on me only a couple hours before heading to the airport.

Luckily, I could cancel the hotel and arranged to stay with a friend, Tom, instead. The plus side is that I got to catch up with Tom more than I would have otherwise.

Thursday

Games: Yinsh, Kill Doctor Lucky, Ra(x3), Blokus, Web of Power, Pictureka!, D&D 4e, My Word!, Race for the Galaxy(x2).

I managed to get the correct train to Central, and rather than risk getting the wrong train to South Bank, I decided to just walk through Queen St Mall and over the bridge. I kept my eyes out for signs I was going in the right direction, like someone dressed as Cloud, but didn't find any. I arrived at the convention at about 9:30am.

I wandered around the vendor stalls for a little while, played a quick game of Yinsh at the Funatical booth (which I won!) and looked for something interesting. Nothing really struck my fancy at the stalls, but I did run into Chris and Josh from GameQuest (my FLGS) in Adelaide. They had a booth hired but they didn't get a round to organising anything for it, so they weren't going to be exhibiting. I said I'd probably see them around, but I didn't, particularly since their booth disappeared, absorbed by the Intencity booth. Wonder where they were hiding?

I found some people over at the board gaming area, including Kevin (CyberKev63), whom I'd met at the Australian Games Expo in June. We had about 6 people who wanted a game, so we sat down to a game of Kill Doctor Lucky (the fancy Titanic version).

I tried to kill the good Doctor three times in the Lancaster room, to which Kevin joked that I had some kind of foot fetish. Eventually, Kevin managed to kill him when we left it all to Kim to stop him and she was one short. The others didn't know I had about 5 points of cards I could have foiled him with, so I quickly put my cards away before anyone noticed.

I then had a good run as I played and won games of Ra, Blokus and Web of Power against Kevin, Kim and Peter. Kim was keen on trying Ra, and I wanted to try Giant Blokus (I mean, it's freaking huge!). I was interested in Web of Power, since I have China, which I think gave me an advantage in the game. I quite enjoyed Web of Power and will probably try using the rules with my copy of China.

My Ra Tournament was about to start at this point. 7 people were entered, so Ben, one of the volunteers, joined in to make for 2 four player games. 3 of the people were new, 1 had played once and another had played about 6 times, so I was the most experienced (to my surprise).

We had one the new guys in my first game, Simon, and he won our game by a hefty sum, but I came second thanks to lots of Niles. The second game, with a new group, I came last, but the scores were very tight, so I actually came second in the tournament thanks to my lead from the first game (with Simon winning the tournament, boo for beginner's luck!). I won a copy of a book about Ra, and a picture/frame certificate. I wanted the $50 Mind Games voucher though, too bad...

At least I got to hear people complain about me calling Ra just about every time it was my turn. Hey, someone needs to do it!

After the tournament, I found someone looking at Pictureka, so I invited myself into playing with them. The game, by the rules, seemed broken since one of the card types involved bidding on how many objects you could find, but there was no penalty for failing, so there was no reason to not bid ridiculously high just so others don't get a shot at it. With a penalty, like losing a card if you fail, it might be better. Also, the artwork is overly cartoony, which gives more of an advantage to people who have played before as they can more easily recognise the objects. We abandoned the game halfway through.

The guys then invited me to go over and join them in a D&D 4e demo, and I was keen to try it. I played an elven rogue and backstabbed a couple scorpions, and threw the boss goblin into an abyss using my roguey powers. It was quite fun, and I got free loot for doing the demo. During the game, one of the guys, I think it was Ian, pushed one of the other players into the pit for... some reason. Fun, I guess?

Harley ran off to play Munchkin, so Kevin, John, Elphie and I finished off the night with a couple rounds of Race for the Galaxy, which I did very poorly in. What can you do when you get cards for every strategy but yours? Ah well, I still love the game.

We ended the night a bit early, about 8pm or so, and John kindly gave me a lift to my sleeping den, where I made burritos with Tom's housemate Sandra. Yum.

On this day, I walked past the Wizards of the Cast booth and saw the HeroScape table empty. I chatted one of the staffers there for a bit about the game, then we roped someone else in for a demo, where I was trounced because I was quite silly with disengaging one of my robots and got him killed. More free Wizards loot, but I'm not sure what I can do with a few random HS figures without enough to make a squad.

Back at the gaming area, I roped some random people - Jane, David and Jeremy - into a game of Entdecker. John Farrell came over to explain the game, and we also used Professor Easy's guide, whom I will blame for my loss, since it decided that I wanted to spend all my money on the first couple turns. I came out dead last, and Jane had a very clear victory. At least I had fun cursing the Professor throughout the whole game.

We swapped Jane for Jason and had a game of Ticket to Ride, to which David and Jeremy were new. To make up for Entdecker, I came out with 5 tickets completed with a resounding victory. Jason was then swapped for Peter for 2 games of Blokus, in which I once again claimed victory in both. Good ego fodder.

Peter and I then looked over the games and found a small group holding Amazonas, which I wanted to try, so we invited ourselves in. We learned the game from the rules, but it was a pretty simple game, so we didn't have many issues other than some rules clarifications. I misread my secret mission card and failed to get one of my huts. I realised this on the third to last turn, which resulted in two other people checking their cards and realising they had also missed their villages! Oops!

(In which I blamed him for the ills that befell me... hey, I had to blame someone!) Kevin tried a money strategy that failed, whilst I managed to keep the lead on the people points most of the game, even when I picked up a courtesan and 2 toolmakers. Kevin cursed the others for not stealing the lead from me. I was behind in points and pulled out ahead for the win. Kevin tells me we're 1 for 1 and we need another match, but I think I'd need to find some more newbies who will let me win.

Harley then joined in for Cutthroat Caverns. I drew two potions at the start, so everyone targeted me for much pain. I prompted whined about this and I got left alone for most of the game. Kevin managed to get a fair amount of kills, enough so that he won even though he didn't kill the last boss. However, he was only on 20 health, so I should have made the last boss attack me and redirected the damage to him, which would have put me tied for the lead with Harley!

Kevin had a mock up of Keltis, this year's Spiel des Jahres using bits from Rheinlander and a couple decks of cards. We played through, but I got a bit worried about time since I was supposed to meet Tom in Fortitude Valley before 9pm. We managed to complete the game and score, and I managed to somehow catch a bus to the Valley, where I watched Mongol with Tom.

Mongol was quite an interesting immersive film, by the way. Well worth watching.

Games: Magic, Ricochet Robots, Vikings, Cosmic Encounter, Settlers of Catan, Power Grid, Munchkin, Jenga.

I slept in on Saturday and also left my badges at the house, so I didn't get to the con until 10:30am. This meant that I missed Hickman's Killer Breakfast, which sounded like it was a lot of fun. Sigh.

I dropped by the Wizards area again to do a Magic demo, so I could snag a free theme deck (Thanks for the tip, Harley). The demo guy said he's supposed to let people win, but I got destroyed because I think I drew about 3 spells in the whole game. I used to play Magic years ago and never play anymore, although I still have all my cards. I wasn't really going to say no to free loot.

I went over to the Reaper Miniatures Paint 'n Take but they didn't have enough brushes, so I said I'd return later.

There was a lot more cosplayers on this day than the others, since they had the competitions on. There were far too many Final Fantasy characters around, and I heard rumour of an attractive slave girl Leia around. I never saw her, so I don't think she exists.

I was waiting for Kevin to finish Dshunke since he promised me a game of Cosmic Encounter (and specifically did not wear one of his "I'd rather be playing Cosmic Encounter" shirts for the day). I wandered around the hall for a bit and purchased a copy of Carcassonne for $35 from Mind Games for a friend.

Cosmic Encounter was interesting, as I managed to use my visionary powers (which allowed me to dictate what cards people played) to pretty good effect and became much feared. Kevin was the pacifist (wins on a compromise card) and was also feared. Sadly, I didn't win, but it was very close with everyone on 4 bases (with 5 needed for the win).

Luckily, even though it was past the time it was supposed to end, the Paint 'n Take was still going, so I managed to paint my little pirate dude. I wanted a red coat so I chose 'brick red', which turned out purpley, but he still looked pretty decent. This was my first time, and I was kind of surprised how easy it was to paint something. Unfortunately, this means I'm tempted to paint my Descent minis... (and my Battlelore, Battlestations, Shadows Over Camelot, Warrior Knights, RoboRally...).

During the painting, nearby there was some kind of 'cosplay chess' going on, which was quite strange. People in cosplay were playing a lifesize version of chess, so they were just generally standing around talking to each other until someone told them to move. I should have taken photos of this bizarre event, but I was zoned into my painting.

It was actually fun towards the end when 4-5 people were on level 9 and everyone had to keep stopping them from winning each turn. However, it took far too long to get to that point and I much prefer Cutthroat Caverns with its set amount of encounters and less direct screwage.

There was a set of giant cardboard Jenga blocks that were around most of the convention that was about 1.5 metres tall when set up. Young Harley liked to show off his martial arts abilities at knocking Jenga blocks out.

Since I hadn't paid much attention to the booths, I decided this would be the day I gave it more of a go.

When I walked in I decided to give a WoW demo a go. Well, that was a mistake, since I had fun playing it and they tricked me into buying 3 starters and a raid deck with their cheap prices. Now I have to figure out how I'm going to fool people into playing it with me. I really don't want to get into CCGs though...
