Well, the third year of A Gathering of Strangers is just completed and this was the first time that it was for 2 days. I had a bittersweet time there because we are moving out of state next week and I'm not sure if I'll be able to come next year.

This year I was able to play a lot of games that I hadn't before. Also, the math trade and subsequent trade tables were kind to me as I was able to get rid of games that I don't play much and get games that I hopefully will. I came to the con with 5 games to trade and through the prize table, trades, and the Free Game box, I came home with 10 games to much eye-rolling from my wife.

Please add your games and experiences at the con this year. Thanks! It was great playing with you all this year and am looking forward to the next time we can.

Other lists for previous years can be found here:

This was the first game I jumped into at the con on Friday. My wife came with me on Friday and I was excited to play it with her because it sounded like the type of game that she would like. The first time we played, we had 2 epidemic cards really close together and got killed as black overran everything. But all 4 of us were new to the game and so we decided to try again.

The second game went better because we had a better idea of what was expected from us and how to cooperate and we ended up winning. My wife loved the game and so did I. I think that it will be purchased next time we get around to buying games.

The second game my wife and I played was Mr. Jack. I had had passing interest when it came out, but my wife isn't much into deduction games and so I wanted to try before considering buying it.

It turned out that Skye, my wife, liked it better than I did. I found it a bit light for my tastes, but it was great for her. I ended up winning by running the time out and Skye couldn't catch Jack before the end of the 8th turn, even though she knew who he was.

This is a maybe buy, but ut might be fun enough to look into once my daughters get a bit older.

This was the star of the con for me. I wish that Skye had been able to play it with me, but she left for a bit to run an errand and we couldn't get to play it again on Friday because El Grande ran long.

I played this once on Friday and once on Saturday and loved it both times. It's everything that I liked about San Juan (not much) and nothing that I hated (a lot). It seems to be more similar to Puerto Rico in depth and strategy than San Juan without the scripted feel of PR. I don't own either SJ or PR (SJ because I hate the game and PR because I know a lot of people who own it already and it's not a favorite) and I think that I will be getting this because it scratches the itch without the problems of the other two.

Neither game that I played I felt that I did well in, athough I won the first game with all newbies. The combos and figuring out how to structure a strategy will take multiple plays. Fantastic game.

This is one of my favorite games of all time and so when Skye insisted on playing it Friday night, I agreed. It was a 4-player game, which wasn't optimal, and I hadn't played in a while and was out of practice and played poorly. The winner played very well and beat everyone by a good 20 points or so. This is one that I need to break out more and stay familiar with.

This was a game I've been meaning to try for a long time. We broke this out first thing on Saturday. Skye had other things to do so I took the opportunity to sink my teeth into a meatier "not Skye" game.

The first thing that was noticable is that this is a very deep game that requires multiple playings to really understand. While this is a good thing, normally, the fact that we had 5 new players and 1 experienced one meant that this game was going to be slow. We ended up quitting 3 hours in with the furthest country being at 12. While I think that there is a lot there, I woud have preferred to learn it as the only newbie so that the game flowed better. Nothing against the people that were playing, but we really didn't get a grasp of things for a bit.

Overall, I would like to try it again in a different situation and see what it's like, but it's not going on my buy list any time soon.

I finally hooked up with Tim for a game of TS. It took us the better part of a year to finally play this as our schedules conflict.

I played as the US an got into a deep hole in the first turn. While I tried to dig myself out, I couldn't ever get any traction as Tim closed any doors of opportunity that I opened. I finally was put down for good in Turn 7. I feel good to have pushed it that long given what the board looked like after the first turn.

This was another one that was long on my To Play list. We played a 4-player game and I was a bit underwhelmed. It was a fun, light little game, but I'm not sure that is what I wanted from it. I would like to try it a few more times to gage its depth, but right now it's kind of meh.

I have come to really like this game while playing my friend's copy. It's got the co-op/backstab thing without having to deal with a traitor mechanic (something I'm not that fond of, although it does work well sometimes). I was able to buy this off of someone for $13 who dismissed it as "Munchkin-like". It's not, but I am glad for his confusion.

We played a 5-player game of this to end the con and it was really fun. I was the only player who had played before and as such was a target until everyone got up to speed. It came down to the final monster and was won by the person who I think had been playing the best during the game, so that's great, but too bad it wasn't me.

As an aside, of all the "bash each other" games out there (Bang!, Red Dragon Inn, Infernal Contraption, etc), I think that this is my favorite because it is by far the least arbitrary and there is always an in-game reason behind what you are doing. Well worth giving it a try, if your group likes those type of games.

I managed to play this game twice. At the first sitting, as Bill explained the rules, my eyes started glazing over--not due to his explanation, but just because of the way the game sounded, i.e. a medieval theme, acquiring gold, buying stuff, amassing VPs--it seemed so oddly familiar.

However, once I started playing the theme melted away and it was great fun. I think we played with nine different card types, and there are 25 card types in the final version of the game which will be released in October. After the first game I kept wandering by the table, itching for another play.

During the second game I was able to play with Chris, who was new to gaming but a fast learner (whupped me), and Ropearoni and his wife, who I had met last year. One of the fun parts of the con was meeting people from previous years.

Steve Kimball wrote a nice overview of the game over on the Dominion page. Playing with Jay Tummelson helping out was really cool as well. He's going to make a ton of money from this game, given that the designer has another 200+ card types in addition to the base set.

It strikes me as a much funner, expanded San Juan or more accessible Race for the Galaxy that can be played with new gamers and has loads of replayability.

[note: that is just a randome picture until I get my convention photos online]

Agricola was one of the featured games at the convention. I was able to play in a demo game on Friday night and also played a regular game on Saturday. The game does have a Puerto Rico feel to it but there is more going on. It takes a couple of plays to wrap your mind around it. Understanding your occupation cards and your minor improvements as well as the major improvements takes a little bit of time to bring it all together. You also need the balancing aspect of fields, pastures and making use of all of your farm plots effectively, thus realizing the best potential for your point output.

The first game I focused on the flow, mechanics and concept of the game. In the second game I was able to grasp more of the strategy and started to be able to effectively use the mechanics. I think at this point on I can more effectively play the game focusing on the strategy of the game and not needing to figure out the processing of the game. This game is a little challenging to teach but if players play their first game just trying to learn the basics then by the second game they will be able to start grasping the overall strategy of the game. I would definitely play this one again.

My preorder of Galactic Emperor arrived just in time to try it out on Saturday. We started a five player game of it but ended early when 3 players had to leave. I really enjoyed it. I like the different roles and it seems like there's a lot of strategy to explore. Our game was rather slow moving due to the fact that we were all learning as we went but I can see this game moving fairly quickly with experienced players. I look forward to playing more in the future.

I had to grab some and when I returned Jonathan and Bob were looking for more people to play this game. I had never played before and neither had my sister or friend and so we gave it a whirl.

This game rocks! Thanks to Jonathan and Bob for showing me how to play!!

We played this two times and both times it was extremely fun. I already own this and plan on playing it to death with my friends.

Mike Cross patiently taught me this game after I received 35 minis in a trade from him. The sculpts are excellent, and the game looks like it has potential. I just need to trade a few dupes for some "popcorn" figures.

Is anyone in Utah County playing this?

NinjaBob took pity on me (I was dozing in the corner briefly) and we played a game of Qwirkle with the son of a member of our group. It was pretty fast and fun with a couple of adults, although still largely a luck driven game.

I would like to play it with open tiles some time.

Odd, I only played three games and received a GO tutorial in seven hours. Still, the time flew by.
