completely love Axis and allies and games like Axis and Allies. Figured maybe it was time maybe to even review them...but far before then, I figured it's time to list them for all those who like A&A as one of their favorites, but may be afraid to admit it. Those who are looking for an A&A game, here's a list of games that could qualify. But first, identifiers of what qualifies for this list. Now, I know there are the offshoots, but this is dealing with those who love the BIG world wide A&A game. Hence, not counting the smaller battle games, in fact will disqualify them from the list. I'm looking for specific types of games that A&A lovers will love!

First, the combat system is based off of you having a set number you have to roll under (or over) in order to hit. Hence Risk does not qualify, because it's a different type of battle system. On the otherhand, a game like War of the Ring does qualify.

Second, it has to be strategic overall. None of this tactics games (and I admit, D-Day and Battle of the Bulge are both A&A games in the A&A series, but I'm looking at it from a light strategic wargaming outlook, which doesn't have either of these qualify). On the otherhand, A&A pacific qualifies.

Finally, it is not limited to WW2. It can be any time period, as long as it qualifies with a combat system, and the light strategic overview.

Of course we can't begin without including the first and formost of the original games, Axis and Allies. Obviously, how could we have a list without the first one. I beleive this same listing also covers the ORIGINAL which had chits and all...for those who like chits you can seek out that highly elusive game.

Then, they went and revised it, added victory cities, and all the rest. If you like the original, you probably should try the revised. I have both, and both the original and this one have strengths and weaknesses. I enjoy the original slightly more, due to coloration and map size, but both are GREAT games.

All of which are supposedly going to be fixed by this little gem. This one will have a larger board and better coloration!

added: And you know, this is my absolute favorite of all the main A&A lines. This is the closest to a perfect A&A in my opinion.

Now of course that the basics have been covered, it's time to move outwards onto the offshoots. This one is like half the A&A game, where much of the older version was revised for an Atlantic theater. Most of what was innovative in this was included in the revised 2004 edition, however what wasn't was new ship dynamic with supply lines which created a nice little sub warfare type diversion in the Atlantic for the US.

It is also thought to be heavily slated for the Germans to win in this game, in fact some call it unbalanced. I still find it a LOT of fun.

This was also a game that revised and smoothed over some items in the original, and created some more intense sea warfare. Some of these rules were also included in the revised 2004 edition. This game is also considered very unbalanced by some, but still fun.

The coolest thing to do with these however, is to combine A&A Europe with this game and make one MEGA game of a war like A&A, but bigger and grander!

Speaking of bigger and grander, this is the biggest, baddest of them all.

You like A&A, can't get enough of it, then this is the game for you! It uses D12's has tons of various items that increase the scope and actions of the game including generals, major and minor factories and a whole slew of other items. It makes it very similar, but plays differently as well. A unique game that's a blast.

The biggest problem with this game is that it's so big...you might have problems finding some place to actually play it.

Great game for the A&A lover.

But then, why stick around with just A&A, afterall, this isn't just about A&A games, or World War 2 A&A type games, it's about A&A and other games like A&A. This is designed by the same person who designed A&A and it has some of the similar elements.

the new version doesn't qualify for this list as the combat system is very different (that's eagle's 2005 version) but there's good news, if you really want to try the original, you can buy the Eagle game version, d/l the old rules...and you have all the pieces to play!

This plays out very differently, in that the beginning is more about expanding your empire, number of forces are much more limited, and hence the game is more about maneuver and defense as well as an economic (well, different than A&A in that there's...inflation!) system tossed in.

In many ways I like this game even more than A&A!

Varying even more, we come to this little gem. I prefer Conquest of the Empire in the Gamemaster line (this is a series of games by Milton Bradley that originally had Axis and Allies in it), but some say this is the best of the 5 games in that series.

It's a good little game of itself, focusing more on the orient. It has some fascinating things in which put it more in line with a lighter game in my opinion, but at the same time, has a few items which are much more innovative (such as how one determines turn order).

These days updated under the name of Ikusa.

Now deviating from the Gamemaster line, we go even further into a game which many call Axis and Allies in Space. Truthfully, I think it has much more in common with Samurai Swords. It's a lot more aggressive than A&A, and in some ways a lot more fiddly. It almost doesn't qualify for this list even, as the combat system isn't quite the same.

A&A has each piece having a set number to roll under to hit, whilst this game has a set number to roll over (that isn't what disqualifies it, that would still qualify) that CHANGES depending on what you are targetting (that's what set's it on the edge of whether it would qualify or not).

It has a different feel, but at the same time, is almost like a latecomer to the Game master line. A fun little game, not quite up to par with the A&A series, but still fun. If you like space, a LOT of aggression and aggressive tactics, you might consider this game.

Now this has to be one of the favorites that will come onto this list. This one I would put in a trilogy of space games, the first being Buck Rogers, the second being this (and the third which would not qualify for this list being Galactic Emperor since it's combat system in my opinion is drastically different enough not to qualify).

This one adds alot to the game, in that it has more Euro elements blended in, as well as political, diplomatic, and most importantly tech (which can give you bonuses and special abilities. Imagine A&A where you can get not just 6 techs, and certain special abilities, but 20+ special abilities eventually!).

One of the best of the A&A type games, very fun...and LOTS of little plastic spaceships for those who like the plastic aspect of these A&A games.

Some say Buck Rogers battle for the 25th century is A&A in space, but I think this one is the true king of A&A in space.

Added: Though these days, I think you'd also have to add Eclipse the boardgame into that Space trilogy (more than a trilogy of space games now).

However, A&A type games are not just restricted to A&A in space, or history, but fantasy as well. This is one of my all time favorites. It combines not only an A&A type game (with stacks of troops on chits though it's more simple in that most of the time all units just have to roll over a 5 on a d6), but the Lord of the Rings theme. What an awesome idea. Add to that more rules on a furtive Fellowship trying to make it's way to Mordor, trying to corrupt that fellowship, and leaders, and this game is like an fantasy A&A players' wet dream.

Now, sometimes the games that are offshoot aren't as long, or as deep as A&A. This is a fast moving and very fun game, that normally lasts about an hour. Quick, and lite, it's good for that quick A&A fix...with Martians.

This is an iffy one that A&A players may hate. If they are attached to plastic, they probably won't like this, if it's more about the game system, they may enjoy this game. It is on the edge of the A&A gamer's likes or dislikes for multiple reasons. Firstly of course is that it utilizes chits, but second and more important, like Buck Rogers it's combat system doesn't have set rolls. You can improve your units so that the numbers they roll under increases as the units get better.

Still it can be a fun game. My wife's favorites of the A&A type games would have Twilight Imperium as the leader by far, but she also really enjoys this one (as a far second), so of course, in respect for her, I have to include it.

This is a game that kind of borders on the edge as well. It's also perhaps one of my less favorites amongst these games. It has a quick set up however, and is perhaps the second fastest moving besides Nexus Ops, so for one that just HAS to have a cheap dirty game similar to A&A I suppose this one works.

This game, while by no means an A&A clone, is a lot like an advanced A&A with chits instead of minis.

There is a lot to like here...the event cards add nicely to the game, and the rules add enough depth without bogging down too much.

The map is not what I'd call easy on the eyes, and the rules aren't as clear as they might be, perhaps due to translation issues.

All in all, I'd recommend this to A&A fans, and with spiffier components and cleaner rules, it might have broader appeal.

Well, with some new games that have come out, it's about time to add some more to this list for those who are A&A fans and looking for similar games. This is different in it's approach though, that instead of out and out war, it's more like the guy who's spy's get there first...and kill the king...win the game. In some ways this is a similarity (far one though) to Blood Feud in New York which also has the idea of hitmen trying to kill the family boss...or maybe a bunch of thugs...

Ah, can't forget this one...a new A&A version...obviously a LOT in the way it resembles the original. I suppose in a few months I should be adding A&A Pacific (new) and A&A Europe (new version) as well, but since they aren't out yet, I won't be doing that...however this little one is...so here it is...though I would say I prefer the Anniversary edition myself.

The updated version is the closest you can currently get to the Anniversary edition these days without paying a ton of money. More expensive then the original, it also has more going on. If you get 1942, make sure it's second edition.

This guy went directly for the old Game master look and feel for his game. A Pretty good copycat and in some ways it's superior, in other ways...well...

It's sort of like A&A but set in the modern day. He even made the box so that it's basically the same size as the old Game Master boxes...how's that for a touch.

It's an evolving game though, with updates to rules via the website, but still a very interesting take on the A&A dynamic.

This is a great game if you enjoyed D-Day or Battle of the Bulge. In many ways the battle system is superior to AAA games.

Also the Historical content is in-depth and forces are balanced more Historically.
