A print and play game that has achieved a rank on the BGG is a mighty achievement. Even if the rank is low, 30 people have decided to put in the effort of constructing your game and learning the rules.

UPDATE: To be fair I have decided to remove any games that have had a comercial release.

This list is a followup to my previous list Games That Are Free To Print and Play http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/1567.

Feel free to add any print and play games that have a rank that I may have missed.

A very compact version of your standard 18xx game. Quite enjoyable. Everything feels ramped up to no detriment. There certainly aren't any bells and whistles here, but it is a nice "mini-game" (and by mini, I mean it takes hours and sucks up a very long evening, rather than a whole day). It seems perfect with three. I think with four players the length of the game would be drastically abbreviated, but could possibly be too ruthless. I wouldn't consider playing this with five. Quite solid.

UPDATE: Screw it. I raised my rating, to the max. I love this game

I find this game fascinating. Having never liked Dominoes I was a little suprised at how much I liked this. It can be played solitaire as well which is pretty neat. There should be a thread on BGG for solitaire scores!

Most in-the-pocket games (solitaire or otherwise) are very abstract. ZiMP is a very concrete game-- if you don't know how a rule should work, use common sense and figure out if an ordinary Joe would be able to fight zombies with both a golf club and a chain saw (for example). The game is fast-- about 5-10 minutes of play per game. It changes every time you play. It's fairly easy to learn, and there is some strategy in how you play (essentially, it's a choice between health or time-- when either one runs out, you lose). After playing this game for a couple of hours, I had nightmares all night long about zombies chasing me through a house.

This is probably THE best print and play game I've tried so far. It's worth the effort to make the deluxe version as constantly writing and erasing tribes can be messy and troublesome (they will move around a fair bit).

Scott has done a fantastic job capturing the essence of Tresham's Civ game with several interesting modern twists. Technology, wonders, tribe movement and growth are obvious nods to Tresham. The card deck as a randomizer and used to resolve calamities and events is brilliant. The variable board and scenarios give longevity. Would be interested in seeing this properly developed into a two or more player game!

There are some rules ambiguities and there can be a lot of tracking/management througout the game but it's second nature once you're played it at least once. Oh, and like the original games, calamities can be pretty bad when they hit...God knows how many times I almost gave up after a flood turned into a Tsunami or how an epidemic rage through the lands. FANTASTIC!

Great game. My first Zombie game. And my second self-printed one. The atmosphere is great, the mechanics are pretty balanced and the final experience is a 10. Love all the scenarios Kwanchai made plus all the expansion cards. May I recommend the crawlers expansion as a must.

Certainly, it is a fine little 18XX game. This and its companion piece 18AL are well worth the effort to print up and cobble together. In a perfect world these would be nicely published packaged together on a double sided board.

I suspect that the bank is a little bloated, I'd be interested in trimming a grand off the top and starting with 7,000 (or perhaps even 6,000). This bank cut should bring building right to the end of the game rather than over optimizing the spaghetti and repeating runs.

As opposed to 18AL not all companies are created equal. Knowing this going into the game helps a little, but it can be startling when you first jump into a company expecting something more. You should go with the suggested variant of moving the G&F (GirlFriend) starting city up to Columbus is evens out the board a bit.

Still though it gives a very satisfying 18XX experience, and with quick players could be completed in an evening. With contemplative players this 18AL and Steam over Holland are the only 18XX games that are going to be close to finished in a very long evening.

This is a very good game. It is very strategic and scales well between 3 and 5 players. There is no hidden information (as far as the cards go) and although there are several items to consider when choosing a card, a good decision can be made without holding up the game. This is the best free game I have played.

INFO
1-3 player / 20 minutes per player / Ages 10 and up
Defeat or survive the ominous Doom as your explore and venture into Haze Islands. This is a big PIRATE GAME in a small box that got good reviews, won a few awards, and was nominated for a Golden Geek!

Board Game: Haze Islands

OVERVIEW
You are sailing around a board made of map cards, raiding islands to gain map cards to hand, trying to complete adventure cards. You can deploy your limited number of pirates for extra resources at the risk of leaving your ship defenseless. Every actions costs time, and your deck represents how much time you have. The cards you use are discarded on the next players deck (sometimes known to you, everyone, or no one). The map cards cycle around in manner from the first player to the last marking the end of the round (usually 6 in a game). At the end of each round, the Doom threatens the nearest player, and new adventures appear. If you are hit by The Doom or another player (competitive mode only), your role changes allowing you to return to reclaim your title of the most feared pirate in Haze Islands.

Gnostica is an abstract territory based war game ranked 154 in the Abstract Games category.

Gnostica is traditionally played using a Tarot deck. PnP'ers can print out little sets of symbols to attach to each Tarot card to help remember the power of each card. Printable versions of a deck are also available, including this one, which I designed:

I have everything printed out and some of the tokens cut out, just need to glue the board parts to a sturdier base than the cardstock I printed them out on. [update] Played Nate's copy at Phantom of the Attic, and it was as good a game as I'd hoped it would be. He self-laminated the map and the items, which I'm going to do as well. Definitely need to finish making my version now--glad I had a chance to play it! We played with 6, and it was tense--I can't believe how hard this game is. Two of us died and then the remaining four holed up in the cellar...which was fine, until the lights went out and they burst through the barricade. After Jen's hammer got grabbed, it was just a matter of time until we all succumbed to the horde that poured down the steps with no end in sight!

Awesome, awesome, awesome game--why is it not available commercially? I would buy this in a heartbeat, and I know others would as well. I guess its up to everyone else to make their own copies and proselytize to their friends!

A surprisingly good solitaire game! Interesting hand/resource/time management mechanics lead to some challenging situations and decisions. It's a fun, compact (and free) fantasy adventure game! Undeniably better than many solitaire games that are available for sale elsewhere. Update:I've been playing board-game RPG's lately (Runebound, Magic Realm, Return of the Heroes, Prophecy, Talisman, etc.) and have come to re-discover this little gem. With the exception of Magic Realm, most board-game RPG's tend to become "multiplayer solitaire," with players having little or no interaction with one-another. With this in mind I have realized that Island of D2 gives a similar feel to those larger games (which, by the way have a cost associated with them while IoD2 is free). Island of D2 is a small adventure that begs re-plays in much the same way as standard Klondike solitaire - it's very tough to win but fun to keep trying. While it's NOT a replacement for the list of larger games I mentioned above it *is* a quick, fun and FREE option to fill time with a sense of fantasy adventure. I give it an "8.5" because of it's portability, clever design, interesting puzzle and a fantastic VALUE-TO-COST ratio.

Great Game, beautiful board and cards.. what to use for pcs?

Its the best free printable game we have yet found, with a very beautiful cards and especially the board. I recommend printing the board on a 6 color inkjet photo printer on photo paper. The colors are far more vibrant doing this than my laser printer.

I printed the board out twice as big and used spray adhesive to glue it to foamboard.

And we use legos for our game pieces, but risk pieces work too. Actually it added a bit more serious wargame like atmosphere using the plastic army pieces from Risk.

Any other suggestions, as what to use as pieces? With the goals being, small, easy to grab, and cheap.

ps I have desigend a page of printable cardbacks. Sixteen little maps, looks quite nice.

This is a great game, really gives the feeling of a 'fighting fantasy' game book, but can be played quicker, and has more replay value because you can be a different character each time.

It's hard to win, sometimes games are over in the first combat. You need to get some beginning luck in order to make for a fulfilling game (longer), but if you don't get the luck it's pretty quick, so you get a chance to play again soon.

Okay, so I'm the designer, and it took about 9 years to get there, but Euronimoes is now officially ranked. It has 30 ratings and an average rating of 7.6. :-)

Basically, it's a euro-style game for 2-4 players requiring only the rules (which include a playing mat), one or two sets of double-six dominoes, and a handful of poker chips. It takes about 10 minutes per player to play, and it takes less than a minute to "build."

The gist is that you buy dominoes in a market draft, then try to play them in your own personal area so as to minimize your score. You're building vertical runs, where the score of each run is equal to its lowest number.

A puzzly little filler that doesn't outstay its welcome.

A great tile-laying game for free. The artwork is nice and this game is really worth printing and gluing to some cardboard. Great game to stuff in an envelope and play quickly. Just like Carcassonne, you can block other players from completing their tiles if they start getting too greedy.

Ebbs and flows in games are not bad thing, but Balam delivers collosal swings. In my few games so far, at least one person has been a passenger for the last half an hour as the fates have hurt that person. The markets system is clever, while the astromers seem to be critical to voictory or at least not being hit badly by the fate cards.

I tend not to rate things because I have difficulty quantifying my reactions. But I've played this one several times and have to say that I really like it. It's fun, has great components, and is strategically interesting. It has the feel of an updated and more complicated micro. The combination of monster-smashing/destruction and resource management makes it pretty complex. I tend to play rather conservatively and often come in second as a result. Strategically, it's important to be able to invest wisely and to have a good sense of when to ensure you control Godran (the monster) and when not to. The large bonus for taking Godran out can result in dramatic come-from-behind victories, so even if you are behind, it's possible to catch up. In my view, that's a big plus, since I've essentially eliminated myself from any number of games (i.e Settlers or Heroclix) by poor setup. I also like the great player aids on the board, which make for easy reference and make the game more user-friendly for players that aren't used to dealing with chits, movement allowances, and resource points. It would have been cool to have city quadrants that resemble the actual Tokyo, but this doesn't seem practical.

Tactical tile laying game. It's fairly abstract play-wise but the theme works well (evangelizing the tribes). A simple design with plenty of decisions, although you'll have to deal with what's given to you in the tile draw. My first and only game could have used some leader bashing -- there's plenty of opportunity to screw your neighbor but it can be costly.

Best print-and-play game I've played. It's really simple but even more fun. Easy to make and can easily be carried in your pocket - great for playing at cafés etc.

Light railway game with the focus on laying track than financial decisions. The track radiate from a random set up of stations and the trick is deciding when to play your stations and limit other players options. Very enjoyable game after 3 plays. It feels like Transamerica because it is not hard to play and I would not be surprised to see a deluxe version produced in a year's time.

Fast, fun, and easy to make. The game simulates a WWI biplane dogfight. You play cards, trying to outmaneuver your opponent, hoping to take a shot at him when he's vulnerable. It plays quick and stores small -- perfect for a quick game inbetween other games.

Here's a little suggestion if you plan to make this one -- print the game twice on different colored card stock. Cut everything out and separate the Allies and German cards. You'll end up with two copies of the game this way, but it'll be a lot easier to sort them out if they get mixed. (look at the PDF file for this game and you'll see why I suggest this method.)
