Impulse Purchases

We live in an age where every new game is instantly evaluated, analyzed, critiqued, categorized and placed in an online database.
Does anybody make impulse game purchases without reading the reviews first?
If so, I would love to hear your stories.
Were you pleasantly surprised? Disappointed?
I thought of this after seeing a bunch of unrated games from a small publisher and debating whether to just order one, sight unseen.

I saw this game while on vacation in Portland, Oregon and bought a copy, then googled it and discovered Boardgamegeek. That was about three years ago. Not a bad game, but I ended up trading it for a bunch of Car Wars stuff, a game I had played in High School. I'm glad Steve Jackson is publishing a color version of this.

I passed this up the first time I saw in in the early 1980s at the Dartmouth College Bookstore in Hanover, NH. The game sounded interesting, but the Eon box art was so bad that I assumed it couldn't be any good. Back a week later, and bored during our summer vacation, I bought it. Of course my siblings and I loved it and I managed to get all the Eon expansions. (My mom trashed the whole collection when I was away at college). This really got me started on gaming (outside of Avalon Hill).

When I was just getting back into gaming I found myself at a local convention ... Saw this at a vendor booth. It was brand new. I didn't know anything about it. But my jaw dropped when I saw it and I had to have it. At retail :shudder:
Still rate it a '9' so it was a good value even though I could have found it cheaper.
Oh, but I met one of my best gaming buddies because of it. He saw me carrying it around at that same convention and he said "hey, give me your e-mail address because I HAVE to play that with you!" so that more than makes up for the price difference.

I won first prize in a Civil War trivia contest at a game convention -- $100 in vendor bucks.
I didn't have access to my computer so I bought this game and the expansion kit without checking it out on BGG. It looked really cool and seemed to have a unique theme.
Thanks to eBay, it wasn't a total loss.

Never knew much about this game. A friend of mine had this sitting on the shelves and he always told me we had to someday play it, but it unfortunately never happened. One of the local game stores I was regularly frequenting had this sitting on his shelves with a lot of other big box games as well. I looked at the back of the box every time I went in there, probably for over a year, before I couldn't resist any longer and bought it. 60 Euros very well spent!
In general it doesn't take much a for a game to win my interest and I hardly ever do much research beforehand. Another game I could list here is "Through the ages". Bought it in Essen, sold it before playing, have now preordered the upcoming german edition and am really anxious about it though I've never seen it played or having in-depth knowledge about the game. "Buildin up a civilization" are the keywords here that got me excited.

I had been trolling eBay for games and I noticed this one for sale fairly cheap. I knew nothing about the game butthe title intrigued me and so I bought it. What a great surprise! This is a fun game.

This was an impulse buy way back in 1992 or so. What a great buy in my mind. Still play the game and still enjoy it. For me, it's one of the great gateway games to get people playing.
