So I read a complaint on one of the forums about a lack of "usefull" geeklist and I thought i might help in this regards.

First off we need to define what is a negotiation game?

Per the BGG listing: A game in which players make deals and trade resources or favors as the main mechanism.

This sums it up preaty well but I can add that these games are known for double dealings, backstabbing and overall meanness and are not for the weak of heart or easily hurt or offended BGG'er.

This is my favorite type of game and enjoy them a lot. So I will list my favorites or games that I have a working knowledge of. Please feel free to add your favorites or comment on the ones already listed.

Help me make this a "usefull" resource for other members.

The Classic game in this genre of games.

What is it: You play as one of the great powers before WWI and of course try to take over the world.

Positives: Is an experience you will talk about for years to come. Is a no luck negotiation game with no random elements. Plays very well as a Play by Email(PBeM)

Negatives: It plays well with 7 and only 7. It is very long (4-8 hours). The power you get will determine how skilled at negotiation you need to be. This of all of the games on this list due to its epic length and time investment can cause hurt feelings.

A variant of Diplomacy that is truly a game in its own right.

What is it: You play as one of the colonial powers during the age of colonialism colonizing the East.

Positives: Its a very different experience then Diplomacy as the board feels bigger there is alot more avenues for attack and defense. The powers are very different then in diplomacy(this will be mentioned in negatives as well) and may seem unbalanced to sum. To me however it makes it even more fun as you realy have to negotiate your butt off in this one. Plays very well as a Play by Email(PBeM)

Negatives: It plays well with 7 and only 7. It is very long (4-8 hours). The power you get will determine how skilled at negotiation you need to be and the powers feel to some to be vastly unbalanced(I disagree but this is a common complaint).

What is it: Players play as Renaissance era families that are engaging in rampant nepotism. Players are seeking positions in the other families' businesses, and to further that pursuit players offer bribes.

Positives: Is a pure negotiation game and is absolutly viscious. Plays in 60 minutes. Plays well with 4-6. Very simple ruleset(like most of the pure negotiation games).

Negatives: Too short to give you that immersive experience. The rules are so simple that you might think there is not much too it.

What is it: A game where you played as trapped citizens inside a shopping mall trying to stay alive while the zombie are coming.

Positives: Its a Zombie game(this will be in the negatives as well). Has a cool wheel voting mechanic. Plays in 60 minutes.

Negatives: Its a zombie game. Its rules arent the most clear but there not bad. The negotiation portion isnt as important as it could be and you can win without negotiation.

What is it: Players acquire ownership of sections of city blocks then place tiles, representing businesses, onto the block-sections. At the end of each turn, each tile you've laid gives you some sort of payout, but completed businesses (formed of three to six connected tiles of the same type) pay quite a bit better

Positives: Isnt as mean as some other negotiation games(This will be in the negatives as well). Plays well with 4-6 ppl. Has a different theme and mechanic then most negotiation games.

Negatives: Isnt as mean as some other negotiation games. It has randomness in the tiles you draw. More of a trading game then a pure negotition game. Not as immersive as some.

What is it? Players are represented on the board by a group of politicians moving through a network of committees, and need to seek support from their competitors to advance upward toward the Senate.

Positves: Its a pure negotiation game. It plays in 45 minutes. Plays well with 4-5 players. Its a Knzia game.

Negatives: It feels a bit dry. Some players feel certain spots have advantages over others. Is not as confrontational as other negotiation games.

A perfect information, abstract strategy game . . . with negotiation?

Yup - scales up to 8 players, and you can't win without teaming up with / ganging up on other players. But there's only one winner . . .

I'm fairly new to TI3, just purchased it last month(a few plays under my belt), but TI3 has a large diplomatic/negotiation element in it.

It is an excellent "negotiation game", butt-numbing long, but excellent.

A unique and fast playing one hour auction game that has a bit of a coop negotiation aspect to it. Best with 4 and the only number I would want to play with.

Excels as a one hour middle weight alternative to RA that I will request to play when time is short or as a good opener as well. RA is probably the better gateway game (this could work though) but I would prefer this between gaming friends.

Negatives - None that I can think of

A game of pure negotiation. It's like "Diplomacy" lite, with an easier system to solve conflicts, more balanced powers and a shorter play time. I don't like the fact that sometimes players would have to betray their opponents to win, but this have to be taken as a possible part of the game.

Very surprised this game was left out for so long. Players rush to get to different buildings to fill orders, collect goods and deliver letters. Players attempt to influence the player whose turn it is into moving to the buildings they need. Everything is up for sale, trade, or negotiation. And the negotiation is constant, with money and goods changing hands all the time. Great game with the right crowd, cause some may be turned off by its very free-form trading and negotiating.

I realized that this one is all about the negotiation long ago. Trading with goodwill towards others often is repaid with goodwill as well.

But today, I tried a java version... and realized it had major lack: in only allows 1:1 trades with other players. In play, I seldom trade 1:1, but often 2:2, or 2:3 or 3:2, or even 2:1 (if I don't have the right port)...

I couldn't gouge the computer players.

What is it: You play as one of the great powers during the times of the Protestant Reformation. It features a negotiation round in which players can make alliances and other negotiations. Only agreements that change the state of the game have to be kept... everything else is "optional".

Positives: It features 6 distinct powers with very different play styles and strategies. It is designed for 6, but also plays well with 3.

Negatives: It's a long game.

One of the greatest games ever published and the definitive "civ" game.

What is it: You play as one of the ancient civilizations that bordered the Mediterranean Sea or the Fertile Crescent. Your goal is to guide your civilization from the late stone age to the early iron age and emerge as the most developed through a combination of economy, civics, science, crafts and arts.

Positives: Even if you're in last place, Civilization is a blast to play and it's easy to learn. It's all here, warfare, commerce, expansion and diplomacy. You have to use every tool available to you in order to guide your people to victory. And your most important tool is your ability to negotiate. Especially when it comes to the trading round when all sorts of nasty calamities and rich commodities are flying about.

Negatives: It's oop and somewhat expensive to obtain. It's also a long game and can suffer from slow players dragging their butts. Playtimes can benifit greatly from having an experienced player craking the whip and keeping a time limits on trade and movement rounds. No game should last longer than 8 hours.
