This is a list of games that were once interesting, or at least had an interesting idea but that are dated --either because the gameplay has been outpaced by new game designs over the years, or because there's a good idea in there somewhere, but the game needs revamping.

I'm not including games like Titan that are already in the pipeline to republished, or simply are games that we'd like to see republished like Dune. These are games that actually need to be changed --updated for the better.

Feel free to add your own!

This the game that actually prompted the list. The fact that Canada is still (somewhat) divided politically by language (among other things) keeps this game relevant. Sure there is little chance of civil war, but its fun to simulate isn't it? SPI wargame style? No. But something economic/political/battle like Shogun or even A Game of Thrones (first edition)? That would be fun.

I loved this game as a kid, but it is now clearly out of date. Everyone loves Wings of War: Famous Aces, but somehow that rather inprecise game play isn't as fun as Richthofen's War as I remember it. Could we update Richthofen's War to include the fabulous Wings of War: Miniatures but with the gridded gameplay of Richthofen's War? Or am I looking at RW through rose-colored glasses?

Another game I loved as a kid. Sure the low Arab morale in most battles, combined with the Israeli air power, meant that many games were one-sided. But we loved the game anyway. Based on the Panzerblitz/Panzerleader system, this one clearly needs an update. It is worthy of an update too, as these Middleast conflicts seem to never end. PanzerBlitz isn't on this list because an update is already in the pipeline: Panzerblitz: Hill of Death. How about the same for Arab-Israeli?

Has it been 5 years already since this game came out? Sure the tradelists are still flooded with offers to trade this game by people who picked it up on sale for 5 bucks and have never played it, but underneath the goofy packaging is a fun, cheap, simple minitures battle game. Market it with more teams with different powers and strengths and it would be perfect for league play. I'm probably dreaming here too...

A light D&D style battle game that we loved as kids. This one has not aged gracefully, but there is still the makings of a quick battle game there. I'd love to see an update with decent components and more card options and play choices.

This fun game doesn't actually need an update, but I think it could be more widely popular if it had a theme change and/or graphics update. Perhaps a midieval war setting? Anything but manga. Fairy Tale fans take it easy on me.

Many of us loved these sport simulation games. They were a blast and we didn't have videogames back then. "Madden" and other video games have doomed these games to the dust bin, but really, as games like Card Football: Premiere Edition demonstrate, they can still be fun. But is there anyway to update Strat-O-Matic Baseball and APBA Pro Football so that videogame fans will enjoy them? Frankly I don't know. But surely you BGG'ers have some good ideas...

This game of helocopter rescue/ battle during the fall of the Shah of Iran is certainly unusual. But what makes it particularly good for a wargame is that it is playable with 2 or 3. Not that unsual these days, but 20 years ago it was a different story. Can we get this updated for a new theme ("Behind Enemy Lines" or some Iraq setting perhaps), nice euro components, and a simplified battle system? Heck, let's give Nexus Ops a contemporary war theme with this game.

30 years ago this was THE GAME. I mean it had a 3-D map!! Well...sorta anyway. I suppose Twilight Imperium (Third Edition) has occupied the field when it comes to big, multiplayer space battle games, but wouldn't be fun to see Godsfire back with nice components and perhaps even ship figures? Tighten up the rules, make it slightly less complex, and boom goes the dynamite! You have a fun, modern game.

My siblings and I loved this game as a kid. But unlike most 1970s/1980s family games, there is actually a pretty good bidding game here. It needs an update to be fitted with eurogame style chrome, but really this is a game that has aged better than most in the 35+ years that have passed since it came out. Of course the fact that my dad was (is) a car dealer has nothing to do with my fondness for this game.

I know I have been saying this for a while, but a sexy artwork redesign and component consolidation would do this game wonders. It is really an excellent train game and not too complicated. It is plagued by being a bit fiddly with all of the goods chips and the board artwork is hard to read and very bland. The artwork for everything else is a little bland compared to everything else that is out now.

By component consolidation, I mean replacing the zillion different chip counters with simple wooden cubes or something that I have suggested before and works really well.

Really, what needs to happen is a simplification back to the detail levels of Starfire and Starfire II, but using the d10 mechanic of Starfire (3rd Edition).

See, 3rd, 4th and 5th ed are just mind-numbingly detail oriented, and fixated on the strategic game. But 3rd also introduced a 1d10 roll per weapon, rather than 2d6 per weapon of 1st and second.

1st and 2nd were focussed on the tactical game. But blending 3rd ed resolution with 1st ed simplicity and tactical focus makes for an exquisite game.

There are fan made expansions for this but the original cards are mostly what need the overhaul. Reprinting them would fix a lot of the issues people had with the game.

This was put out in the first round of the great CCG explosion which resulted in it having one really bad thing in it that vanished in later CCGs and one thing it desperately needed was missing.

The bad thing was that early on CCGs used rarity as a controlling factor on power. So Rares were more powerful and cheaper to use than commons because they figured "hey, there will only be one in people's decks!" HAHAHAHAHA. Magic learned THAT lesson real fast and actually balanced cards (more or less) without any regard to their rarity. The guns in Rage are a particularly telling example of this "rarity will produce game balance" issue. If those same cards were produced today they'd be more balanced.

(that all of rage's set were produced in a narrow two year period meant that when this flaws became obvious with ALL CCGs, they'd already issued 3 sets!)

The thing it didn't have and desperately needed was keywording of frequently used mechanics. Remember when Magic introduced that? Instead of having a similar mechanic working slightly differently because of variations in how it was worded on dozens of cards, it was keyworded so it worked the same on every card. A lot of headaches one why two very similar cards work so differently could be avoided with Keywording.

Not to mention creatured needed Keywording. There were things that required you to be in one form to use, for example, but you were supposed to figure out what form some creatures were in based on their artwork! (some did have Keywords, but not all creatures did. Oy)

Those are really the two issues that kept this game from hitting its full potential. If it had come out a few years later, it would have had both those issues dealt with. The fan made cards do generally deal with these. It's somewhat telling that there's now enough fan produced cards that is creeping up on the 200 mark. yet there's ONE FAQ entry on all those, and dozens on each of the similar sized original sets. Behold the power of keywording!

There are interesting game mechanics in there (moving your dudes around, income from oil...) and the theme isn't bad really. For a 1973 game, it has solid Euro aspects to it, but it eliminates people from the game as it goes on, and the cards that affect gameplay are dull. There's definitely room for improvement. Now, if I could just find enough ideas and imagination...

I confess I'm surprised this wasn't put up sooner.

Yes, there is 'Federation Commander' that streamlines the rules a lot, but...well, it's not SFB. Taking FedCom production values, and applying them to the standard SFB rule set would be a great place to start.

And the real reason this should be on the list...HELLLOOOO, original series Trek? There have been *4* new TV series with a net of 25 seasons more content, 10 movies, and countless video games and books.

It would be awesome to see an update of this game, improved production values, and with the newer races and technology.

As much as I love Junta it needs an update, desperately. There aren't enough cards, the coop phase could be tidied up significantly, and the whole thing could use a tightening up of the rules (which are awfully written) and a bit of spit and polish.

It could be a fantastic game. As it is it goes on a bit too long and slow, despite the great basic idea.

I used to play this tons when I first got it, and then haven't played in years. The thing is I think it's a good game, and really only needs a few tweaks to make it great. Fix Wizards (or even just remove them) and tidy up a few things, and I think you'd have an excellent miniature game.
