So in my recent retro game fest I have played an lot of oldies that have that thing I refer to as the electronic doodad or also sometimes referred to as the noise thingy.

This is a list for those games with those famous 9 volt powered components that get called a plethora of things in the instructions; rather it be the Crime Computer or the Depth Finder or whatever they want to call it. This is a list for us to express our love of the electronic doodad.

The Electronic Dive Control Center.

This nice little component acts as the treasure randomizer, keeps track of your oxygen level, and is used when taking those fateful dives where you never quite know how deep the water is going to be.

It makes a descending and ascending series of noises when you dive as you wait with anticipation for that treasure found noise.

All that joy powered by a simple 9 volt battery.

The Command Center.

It cries for help and taunts you; you use it to look for items, and do combat, it does everything you could possibly ask from a doodad (except to stop calling you human skum all of the time).

It is a true thing of joy......Until it starts killing you.

The Electronic Crime Scanner. This little 9 volt wonder is basically Mr. X from the Scotland Yard game. It tells you at first what building the crime is being committed in. It gives you clues via sound and it's little dispaly as to where the crook is going to.

The best part of all of this is that even though it may look like an old cell phone it will not give you a brain tumor (I think the 9 volt battery protects you).

The electronic organizer. This little personal organizer like object is used for searching for money. It tells you lovely stuff like "Take a Clue" or "The money is not in the living room".

The best thing about this is unlike your own palm pilot there is no Windows CE on it so it does what it was supposed to do....until the batteries run out.

Then there is this thing. The doodad is also the board you play on. The volume on my original copy sucked and it was hard to hear the sounds except when the dragon wakes up and is killing you. Still do this day I do not know the glorious sound that it makes when finding the treasure, just the sounds of finding a wall and being chased/eaten by the dragon.

I am sad now.

Reiner Knizia even has designed a doodad or two. If only I could understand German then I would get it.

This is what came to my mind after reading your list. You not only have the sounds for each action but you get the added bonus of the "whirling" sound when the parts are moving.

I can't remember if it was a 9 volt or not, but his little gem went something like this (with alternating red diode):

NEE nee nee NEE nee nee - buzzzz

with the buzz and cooresponding lit diode indicating the winner of the current face-off.
