All too often, new editions change too much. Frequently, some parts of the oder edition were better, and some parts of the newer edition are better.
This list is for games where the best edition is found by taking the parts from edition X and edition Y, and maybe even edition Z as well.

Starfire 2nd edition had a lot of great simplicity built in. But it still used the 2d6 per roll to hit.
3rd ed was overly complex, but used 1d10 for to-hits.
Also, 3rd ed make the hulti-hit engine rooms standard, rather than optional.
Take the 2nd ed, but use the third ed to-hit tables and the 1d10 rolls, and the Engine Rooms option. Speeds stuff up, and is really the best of both worlds.
Please, add your own. I want to know what else you feel has good hybrid vigour!

This really is the hybrid; it's a light version of Wizard, plus full version of Melee, with a light version of In The Labyrinth.
It's enough to go beyond just a board game, but not quite enough to support a full Roleplay campaign.
What it needs is a companion (which was planned, but not released) including much of Advanced Wizard,Advanced Melee, and more non-combat stuff from In The Labyrinth..

Play the game at its basic level, but use the Miniatures rules from Commander's edition for table-top, hexgrid free, play!

There were 2 editions of this game (The second edition is shown here). In the second edition, they enlarged the board (a map of Britain) but did not recalibrate the legend for the map. This means that if you look for a tiny town, it may be as much as 2 inches away from where the legend says it is. This can get very frustrating.
Use the 1st edition map with the expansion cards and rules from the 2nd edition.

Use 5.5 mechanics, but include the 7.5 types and talents. MUCH better game that way.
