The weekend of August 23/24 saw the Lansing Board Gamers group host ConQuest 2008. The event had a large ballroom dedicated to open gaming, a table filled with games donated for open play, scheduled tournaments, raffle drawings, contests and a couple of vendor booths.

I was only able to attend for part of the day on Sunday and only played a handful of games. If you were at ConQuest 2008 please feel free to add items to this list and describe what games you played and anything else you might wish to comment on.

Thanks to Matt, Ben, David, Kristie(sp?) and Tina for letting me play games with them while I was there.

When I arrived there were several groups with games already in progress around the room. I wandered around and found a group of gamers near the Clems Collectibles vendor booth playing Red Dragon Inn. The game was nearing the end, with one player already out and the other three perilously close to crossing their fortitude and alcohol content and passing out.

I hadn't packed my copy og Red Dragon Inn II and I regretted the oversight, since adding more players and the new drink cards would have been fun, and it would have been my first chance to try out the sequel.

I brought out my copy of Jamaica and a five player game was played. We had the worst dice rolls I've seen yet in this game, with several rounds where players couldn't really do much of anything, or worse, were forced to move backwards or dump high quantities of goods to load one or two of another item. Things picked up near the end with three of us dashing for the finish line while the others tried to catch up. The winner won with the 15 points for reaching Port Royale and a single +7 bonus points card in his hold for 22 points total.

Next a deck of Flux was brought out. It had a lot of religious-themed cards along with the base game cards which made it interesting. The game got pretty crazy with the new rules but finally settled down when a rules reset was played that let me sneak out a win in the manner that anyone ever wins a game of Fluxx - pure luck.

There were a lot of people looking to get a game of Agricola going. We already had five from the Fluxx session. I saw at least two other Agricola sessions in progress as we were playing.

This was my second game of Agricola, both times using the 'E' & 'Z' decks of Occupations and Minor Improvements. I opted for a strategy of harvesting a lot of grain and getting some sort of oven into play as early as I could so the ability to create food was handled early on. I didn't have very good cards, and of those I did have I couldn't get them into play soon enough to really benefit me. Although the Bread Seller occupation did get me three or four free food during the course of the game. For the second time I was unable to find a good strategy for growing my family and ended the game with just the two family members. This was a close game between four of us though, with the winner grabbing 26 points, and second, third and fourth with 24, 23 and 22 points.

Finally we broke out the WoW Adventure game and played with three players.

This game does a good job of being the exact opposite of the big box WoW boardgame, also published by FFG. Turns go quickly, combat is a quick and painless single die roll event and the whole thing is over in an hour or so.

There are a lot of neat ideas in this game, most notably the encounter cards that are double-sided with their rewards printed on the backs. This eliminates the need for additional decks and saves time - you beat an encounter, flip it and add the loot to you bag or equip it onto your character. Ben, playing the single Horde character against Matt and I who played Alliance, rocketed ahead to the red level and challenged an overlord, which gave him more than half of the valor points needed for a win. He headed for Booty Bay and swapped some potions for another valor point and won the game handily.

To be honest I had never even heard of this game before, now I want it. A very fun game and I was able to pick up on it quick enough to not come in dead last, sorry Van. I enjoyed this a lot.

Wow did we get the rules for this one wrong, for about half the game, by the time we figured out what we were doing I was hosed beyond hope. So I finally just threw the game. You're welcome Van.
