Wolverine- Capable of bringing down a foe twice its size. Any questions?

So says a poster of a wolverine taped on the door of my wife's office. Put there by her co-workers.

A warning? Perhaps, but she takes it as a compliment. It is, after all, only one facet of Cindy's personality. One that can surface in the boardroom and sometimes around a board game.

So, for those of you who may meet her at BGG.CON later this year, here is a glimpse of her other virtues.

Besides, what else would a woman want on her 50th birthday but a Geeklist in her honour?

The first thing you might notice is that she's almost always happy.

No,that's not right. The first thing you'll probably notice is her height(or lack there of). She tops out at 5 feet on a bad hair day.

The second thing you'll notice is that she's happy. No, that's not right either. The second thing you'll notice is her silvery streaked hair. Some people pay good money to have streaks like that but she's achieved it naturally.

The third thing you'll notice is she's happy. No, darn it all, that's not right either. The third thing will probably be that she's wearing a sweater or a jacket. No matter where she is, no matter what the temperature, chances are she's cold. Hence the jacket.

Well, eventually you might notice she's happy. Happy to talk; happy to listen; happy about her family, her work and her life.

And best of all, she's always happy to play a game or two.

When she first took up the game of golf, mainly because I golfed, she asked me what her handicap was.

"Your arms are too short," I said.shake

Despite that, our marriage survived and she has come to love the game. She plays more than I do now, taking clients out for an afternoon and beating almost half of them.

Of course she still plays from the forward tees, so it's kind of unfair.

"All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my mother."

That quote from Abraham Lincoln is in a scrapbook our daughters made for Cindy for Mother's Day a few years ago. Now hopefully, I had a small part to play in what they have become, but it shows the love and respect they have for their mother.

She was the one who put her career on hold to stay at home and raise them until nasty financial matters forced her back into the workplace.

She was the one who stayed home with them when they were sick and couldn't go to school.

She was the one who was the Girl Guide leader who got them involved in volunteering and community work.

She was the mother who made sure their Elementary school got a new playground.

She was the mother who left a business meeting to catch a flight and took a wild taxi ride across the city to the university in order to see her daughter's commencement. Only to turn around and fly back soon after.

Of course she was also the mother who, upon seeing a snake on a trail we were hiking, ran by her young children so fast they had wind burn on their faces.

So much for maternal instincts.

She has a fascination, that some might say borders on obsession, with Winnie the Pooh.

It isn't as if our house is filled with Pooh memorabilia but she does have...
Two jackets, too many shirts to count, a scarf, a coffee mug, two decks of playing cards, a night gown, pyjamas, a bath robe, and even car floor mats, all with Pooh's lovable face staring back at you.

It seems she can find anything with Winnie's visage on it and when she does I'll hear, "Oh look. Pooh."

Hmm, maybe she just likes to say Pooh.

She may not be the Ultimate Sports Fan, but she's fan enough to have her face painted with a red maple leaf when we watched Canada play Fiji in Millennium stadium at last year's Rugby World Cup.

Then, at Murrayfield, she had a thistle painted on one cheek and a silver fern on the other when we saw Scotland play the All Blacks. (where she was awed by the singing of Flower of Scotland and then by the Haka.)

She's been to the NCAA Basketball tournament and cheered at the pure desire and thrill of last second victory. And cried at heartbreak of last second losses.

She's worn red to Calgary Flames hockey games, way back in the days when they actually won a Stanley Cup.

And she watches baseball or football when she needs a quick nap.

She's hiked on new black lava in Hawaii, in the misty green forests of Haida Gwaii and in the sun baked canyons of the American southwest; and only once lost her way.

She's wandered the streets of Paris, traveled London via the Underground and explored the old town of Geneva; and only once lost her way.

She's climbed to the alpine meadows of the Rockies, walked amongst the colourful fall forests of Cape Breton and strolled the Old Course at St. Andrews; and only once lost her way.

She's seen the immense beauty of Niagara Falls, the stark reality of the Vimy Ridge Memorial and the garish neon of Las Vegas; and only once lost her way.

She's flown in a helicopter into the Grand Canyon, onto the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska and over the forests of Northern Alberta; and only once did she puke.(She couldn't get lost, she wasn't flying the helicopters.)

Well, she's a traveler of the Northern Hemisphere, at least. And she loves the people she has met in every and all places.

Despite the wolverine on her door, Cindy is a very approachable person at her work place. In their mentoring program, she has 6 men and women that she assists, trying to use her years of experience to give them a step up in their careers. But when it came to Mentor Appreciation day, she received not 6 but 14 thank you cards and 14 bottles of wine.

Clearly she helps people without even knowing it.

We've both been touched by the spectre of cancer, not personally, but all around us. Family, friends and co-workers have fought this horrid disease.

Some have won. Others, sadly, have not.

So Cindy shaved her head a couple of years ago to raise money for Kids For Cancer, an organization that helps children with cancer and their families.

She managed to raise $5000.00 to add to the several hundred thousand dollars her company has raised over the last 8 years. Next year she said she may 'Shave her Lid for a Kid' again.

And you know what? She's even more beautiful when she's bald.

It's not like I had to pull Cindy , kicking and screaming, into gaming with me. She grew up playing games with her Grandmother. Games like Dominoes and Scrabble which she still loves today.

But when she was confronted with old Avalon Hill games like The Russian Campaign and Third Reich she (understandably) ran the other way. But slowly she found herself playing games. The first War of the Rings, even with all the chits and then Civilization.

Now, whenever anyone mentions Power Grid, she starts to salivate. Ingenious, Alhambra, and most recently, In the Year of the Dragon and Cuba, all vie for her attention.

She regularly beats me at the 2 player A+A games Battle of the Bulge and Guadalcanal and trys to get enough people together to play Advanced Civilization at least once a year.

Whenever we go hiking now, Hive and/or Quarto has to be in the pack. And when we travel, whether by car or plane, Jambo, Travel Ingenious, and/or Fjords have to come as well.

She loves all of the GIPF series and will never turn down a game with a Rondel.

Her zest for games and the fun she has playing them, keeps us both young.

That and those five beautiful words she speaks so seductively, "Want to play a game?"

By the way, this geeklist I used 'Just Us Two.." is a great, comprehensive list for couples.

She laughs at my jokes and at herself.

She plays games with the blue pieces.(when there are some)

She cried when Boromir died in Lord of the Rings and when she was at Juno Beach in Normandy.

She makes a great lasagna but a terrible onion soup.

She loves seafood when it's fresh and wine when it's red.

She helps those in need and those only she thinks are in need.

She belches after drinking root beer and eating raw cauliflower.(And the cauliflower burps are the worst.)gulp

She plays games to win but has fun doing it.

She's a neat freak who has a Celtic knot in the shape of a heart tattooed on her...
Well, if she really likes you, she'll show you.

She's at home in an office in high heels or in the back country in hiking boots.

She's gone with me to at least 3 Jethro Tull concerts(that I can remember) and hasn't made me go to Celine Dion once!

She is as much of a gamer as me, as she is the one who said we should go to BGG CON.

So there you have a quick primer on Cindy, my wife. It's probably more information than you need to know, and yet still not nearly enough to describe her.

But if you play a game with her at BGG CON, be aware. It might be the Celine Dion loving Pooh bear sitting beside you, but she can turn into the Janis Joplin loving wolverine in a heartbeat.

Did I mention she turns 50 on Oct.1?
