The first thing, obviously, is doing a search in the common searching engines for thw title of the game or the producer. Then you gather a list of information sites you can easily read later.

Then you read reviews, previews, or specific comments from boardgamegeeks you trust on. You mature a decision about the game, basing on the opinions of other buddies that are, as you, addicted to buying games.

Then, when the long waited box is on your door, you carefully open the envelope, hoping that the postal service didn't destroyed the contents... then you open the shrinkwrap and the game's box. THen you stare in amazing of the beautiful contents of the box, or get angry because 2/3 of the box is pure air, and it's hugely oversized in relation of the components!

If you wanna play, you must study, first! Sometimes (as in my situation) this step comes before #3, because before purchasing the game I usually study the rules to understand if there is some mechanism that pisses me off.

Oohhh... the pleasure of pushing your cleaned thumbs on the counter sheets... the "pop" of counters that falls from the sheet! Sometimes, before punching the game, I want to be sure I'll play it, so I read carefully the rules again, I figure some mental session of the game, etc. Some games remain unpunched...

A solitaire session, when possible, is a must to understand the mechanism and explain them to fellow gamers. For many of us (too bad) solitaire testing is the only way we can play sometimes - in other occasions the solitaire playing is the only way a game can be played (i.e. Ambush!) so the "cycle" jumps directly to the last steps.

If you are obsessive with your games order (like me) you probably will put counters in separate ziplocks, keep cards in card protectors, keep boxes in an apposite closet, etc. This phase could include preparing player aids, traducing rules, etc. all the activities that can ease the game storing.

If you're lucky, you'll get to this step, and you'll introduce the game in one of your usual gaming session. This is the worst step, where all your fears and hopes mixes together in an explosive and nerve destroying cocktail.

Too bad. THe step #9 has been a failure. Your gaming buddies kicked your ass because you wasted their time in proposing such a crappy game. The only solution is one: trade the game! And with the money earned you can start at #1 again...

So steps #9 and #10 were a complete success and you have skipped step #11 completely. You keep revisiting #9 and #10 again and again and again. You study the game and your opponents, practise gambits and openings, devise new strategies and tactics, read articles and comments all in the hope that one day you will be worthy of the title Grand Master.

Study hard Grasshopper...

Well, you're the chief. You've mastered the game. All who gather around your table fear you. Yet as you play and play, something inside starts to itch. It grows as time goes by. Before long, its a burning desire. It's time for a new game.
