At the 2008 edition of Firenze Gioca, game convention held yearly in Florence,
http://www.firenzegioca.org/it/
there has been a little exhibition of my games' prototypes. A larger exibit has been at "No Sólo Parchís" - Eutopía08, in Cordoba. Further exhibitons have been held at Lucca Games 2009and Play 2010 in Italy.

Here I am posting an overview for those who were not there.

Some more detailed infos on my games are in this list:

First prototype, february 2002
(back left)
Made in one night on white Carta Mundi cards (gift of the factory) and little cardboards, leftovers from printing works. Drawings by me. WWI theme: on the cards, the Red Baron and a Camel. Measures for short and long range are taken with a piece of string with a red sign in the middle.

Working scheme, february 2002
(front left)
My draft to Dario Calì to make a professional layout.

Cockades & Crosses, 03/12/2002
(bottom center)
Prototype to show to would-be publishers, one month later. Deliberately ambiguous new title to fit both world wars, included in the cards. Layout by Dario Calì using color drawings from books. Xeroxed on cardboard of different colors to better tell each maneuvre deck from the other. Damage cards are smaller for the same purpose.

Cockades & Crosses, 2002
(bottom right)
Playable prototype for playstesting, reduced version in patience format on suggestion by Nexus to get a more reasonable gamefield size. The piece of string is now a ruler. Larger damage cards for easier identification of the deck.

Wolrd War Wings, 2002
(front)
Layouts by Dario Calì. Working trials for Nexus Editrice on the original drawings by Vincenzo Auletta. Background by Dario Calì using a drawing taken from "La Squadriglia degli Assi" (by Gregory Alegi & Andrea Angiolino, on Rivista Aeronautica issue 6/1994). The game has most of the final features: color codes, icons, lighter firing cone with red lines at the sides.

Dawn of War, 2006
(front right)
Digital prototype for international playtesters. Layout by Fabio Maiorana and Roberto Di Meglio on the bases of the prevuious games, with drawings from books. Notice the four sided damage card, to save materials and give more gaming value, afterwards replaced by cardboard counters.

On the background, Russian edition of Famous Aces.

Ulysses, 2000
(left)
First playable prototype on Carta Mundi blank cards. Map sketch by me: even if it does not looks like, every path is perfectly symmetric to allow objective cards of equal difficulty. Round handmade counters, squared counters from an old S.P.I. simulation boardgame.

Ulisse, 2000
(right)
Prototype with board in Italian by Venice Connection, with English rules and cards to show to would-be partners. Tangled and twisted paths on Alex Randolph's suggestion, random goals, other cìhanges to rules. The game will be publisghed in Gertman by Winning Moves on the basis of this prototype.

Only a few of the prototypes done in the 15 years before the release of the game.

Secoli Bui, 1991
(left)
First playable prototype done on leftovers from printing works, using one side of them for the "things" and the opposite for the "money" cards to tell one deck from the other. Drawings (so to speak) by myself.

Trials of cards, around 1992
(right)
Drawings by Gianluca Meluzzi in two different styles.

Tempi oscuri, middle '90s
(background)
Suitcase-shaped plastic box by a publisher from Milan, illustrator unknown. The cover comes from "The Black Plague" card. Unpublished.

Dark Ages, 1997
(center)
Prototype for playtestyng and to show to would-be publishers. Layout by Paolo Parrucci with medieval illustrations for Nexus Editrice. Xeroxed on cardboard of different colors to tell each deck from the other - money cards are smaller for the same purpose.

Storyboard, around 1997
(back left)
A card taken from the written storyboard meant for the illustrators to draw a prototype. Ballpoint pen and felt pen on leftover from printing works.

First playable prototype, 1998
(middle left)
Illustrated by Luigi Castellani, black & white to allow easy xerox copies. Used for playtesting and to be shown to publishers. The game included 44 tiles then reduced to 28 for production restrictions.

Pre-production prototype, spring 2004
(front left)
Made by Lapis Editrice on drawings by Lorenzo Terranera. The experimental box is a videotape case, lately abandoned to avoid that the gamebook would be mistaken for, yes, a videotape.

Artist's studies, july and september 2004
(right)
