I've been umming and erring (as well as doing a little drooling) over WW2 African Campaign games and have got a short list of 3 games.

Any suggestions (or additions)?

Thanks.

I've played this game a few times and really like the map, pieces, feel, etc but.....

... I don't know the lack of air power and the simplification of supply rules (although very clever) just doesn't seem to fit what I have read about the campaign. I'm also a bit uncertain about the massive wipe outs of unsupplied troops - this game is very unforgiving. I love the time-frame that the game can be played in too as well as the way that you can change what happened.

A great game but (getting a dreamy look in my eyes) is this the one?

Great looking game that is simple without being simplistic. I've downloaded the rules and they look great. Love the idea of supply dumps, air power to support or bombard, port movement, etc. The map looks wonderful too (I can just imagine it being blown off the bonnet of my command car during a sand storm!). Is this a bit too old school though? Does it capture the tension of the campaign and does it allow history to be re-written?

Ths game is also incredibly cheap and has camel troops as well as the LRDG. (and is designed by Dean Essig!)

I like CDGs and this looks like a good one. The cards simulate historical events and give the campaign the feel of North Afrika. The map looks a bit messy though and I'm not sure how well supply and air power is handled. Sometimes I feel that the card driven mechanics can take away from the feel of actually running the campaign as well. The use of cards also limit the solitaire play ability of this game (always a good fall back for a lonely gamer).

There is only one, and is DAK2.... no others need apply . Wonderful commander seat feel combined with deep decision making. Not to mention a massive variety of scenarios from 2 hours to 100s of hours. It is on the complex side, but it isn't unmanageable. I'd probably start with Tunisia first and work your way in.

How could you leave this one out? It's a rather silly game--it seems like it mostly comes down to a roll for an attack on Tobruk. But it's fun! And it's a great intro to wargaming--simple rules, low counter density.

Desert Rats has much to commend it. I feel it has unjustly settled into obscurity. Aside from its simplicity and fairly quick playing time, it has a game mechanic I have come to call the continuous move that does a really good job of recreating the feel of the desert campaign.

The game has several scenarios and you can quickly see how well the system handles situations as diverse as O'Connor's Offensive and El Alamein.

I gave a detailed descriptioin of the continuous move mechanic on the Geeklist "What Specific Game Mechanics Make You Say 'Cool!'", item #93.

For you tactical game buffs, Tobruk is one of the most detailed battle systems produced for a boardgame. It's effectively a set of miniatures rules bound by a hexmap.

GDW's First Battle system was a very good set of rules, but were largely forgotten because of the overwhelming popularity of the Advanced Squad Leader system.

The Sands of War was a game set which featured desert combat from WWII through Operation Desert Shield.

Now I would add this one which combines the original Desert Fox, Trail of the Fox, and the Fox Killed prequel which carries the game for the entire 38 months of the North African war...from the Italian invasion of Egypt to the end in Tunisia.
