It sure is tough getting a regular gaming group started. I've been trying for two years to get friends together to play at my place, which sometimes works out and sometimes not. Then recently I came upon another Hiroshima group that allows members to sponsor events, so I got involved. It's still early, but I'm hoping for the best. My first public event was held in a rented conference room in the Hiroshima City Plaza Citizen Exchange building just down the street. I provided all the games. That event attracted 6 players. This second event grew to 11 players, so the rental expenses were covered. We were able to play some new games and I passed some teaching chores over to others who had been at the first event.

Yuya, a new player, but someone I recognize from around town, was the first to arrive and helped me set up the tables. While we were finishing that, the other early arrivals, Aiko, Jim, Arima, Iori, Sachiko, Hiromi and Joe, got started with Tsuro. Jim's kids, Iori and Arima were new to it. Aiko was the winner.

While they were playing Tsuro, I started to teach Yuya (deaf) the 2-player game Schotten-Totten. With the player aid handy and gestures, it was pretty easy to get rules across. Later Akiko arrived and I let her take my place.

Aiko had really liked playing Cartagena on Sept 7th, so I asked her to supervise Jim, Sachiko, and Hiromi in a game of that. It had been a while since Sachiko and Hiromi had played at my place and Joe was new. Aiko won.

I had picked up Manhattan at a local shop here in Hiroshima, so I gave Joe, Iori and Arima a run down of the rules, then left them to their own devices, so I could go back to the Schotten-Totten game. Iori won the first game ever (without me) of my copy of Manhattan.

Yuya, who had mostly been reading game directions, and Akiko had to go, as everyone finished up their games. Joe hadn’t learned to play Cartagena, yet, so Hiromi and Sachiko played a second game with him. Joe had beginner’s luck and won.

I had also bought Nicht die Bohne at the same local shop, so I sat and played two rounds with Jim, Iori, Aiko, and Arima. I won the first hand and Arima won the second. This was easy to explain and everyone got it quickly. Everyone liked this game, but we didn't play a full game, as I wanted to introduce one more game before others had to go.

With the arrival of Hakan, everyone gathered to play our first game of 6 Nimmt! Perhaps eight people is a little much, but Hakan, Jim, Sachiko, Hiromi, Joe, Aiko, Iori, Arima and I played through 2 rounds. Hakan had beginner’s luck with the first round, taking only ‘one’ point!! Hiromi was second with 4 points. In the second round, Iori and Sachiko tied with 5 points. Again, we didn't play a full game, as Jim and his two kids had to go.

Some folks were getting hungry and left, so that gave Hakan, Joe, Sachiko, Hiromi and I a chance to try Heckmeck am Bratwurmeck. We didn’t quite have enough time to finish before it was time to go, but Joe had a tall stack of tiles. This one was ok, but it really didn't catch fire. I think I had more fun learning the rules and checking my worm rolling ability at home.

Once again, the game that got away. We didn't play it on the 7th or the 28th, but maybe next time. We are still at an early stage where I need to focus my attention on teaching new games. Luckily some people like Aiko and Jim (who played it on the 7th) were able to teach Cartagena, and everyone remembered how Tsuro works. Next time, there should be several people who will also be able to sit down with newbies and teach then 6 Nimmt, Nicht die Bohne, and Manhattan. After a couple more Gaming Events, if our 'regulars' keep coming back and a few newbies keep showing up, we should have a very good, smooth playing group! I've got the room rented for 3 more times through the end of November. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
