One year ago this weekend I was introduced to German style board games. Previously, I did not play board games except the odd game of Scrabble or Balderdash. My first game of Settlers of Catan changed all of that.

My wife and I went to visit some friends for the weekend and after dinner our friends suggested we try to play a board game. Neither my wife or myself were terribly interested, though we were assured that if we did play we would be properly impressed, so Settlers was brought out. We only played one game that night and yet the very next morning we found a games shop and bought our own copy of Settlers.

In the past year our game selection has modestly expanded and we continue to enjoy the satisfaction of playing such games. During a normal week we are able to get together with friends about three times playing two or three games each visit.

This list is compiled for two reasons, one to commemorate our year anniversary and two to get any sggestions you have for next games to add to our collection.

The first and still king! In just one year of ownership we have played it enough to consider buying a new one as the resource and development cards are starting to wear out.

We couldn't get enough of Catan so the next step was an expansion. I was informed by my boardgame buddy that Seafarers was the logical choice as the rules didn't change too much. While we enjoy the game, we didn't feel like it added enough to be an essential part of our gaming.

Even though we heard the game became far more indepth with Citis and Knights we had to do it. Since then it has become our most played game. We suggest to all of our friends who have bought the original to include the purchase of C&K, it's just that good. Just wish they'd change the stupid "Intrigue" card!

After finishing off our Settlers collection (we bought all of the 5-6 expansions as well) I was introduced to a little website called boardgamegeek.com. I was impressed by Catan's number 3 rating (at the time) but was even more impressed by Puerto Rico's number one.

Truthfully, we haven't enjoyed it as much as we thought we would and rarely pull it out for a game, though I believe it's more because we all play poorly and don't understand the strategy needed to play well. Hopefully after a couple more playings things will start to click.

I needed a game that could be played with two players and also a little light so my wife and I could enjoy it together. After a great deal of research Carcassonne was the winner. And it turned out to be a god decision. It is my wife's second favourite game and we play it within our gaming group and alone. A nice diversion from the other "heavier" games.

Again, like Settlers, we liked the original so why not go for the expansions. Traders and Builders was available at my local shop and got bought first. Makes the original even better with the addition of the builder, pig and resources.

My boardgame buddy came for a visit and brought Attika along. I was impressed. I bought it. A modular board that I love, resource management, city building and multiple end games! A great game played with 2, 3 or 4 players.

After reading multiple reviews, geeklists and talking with friends I finally decided to purchase Euphrat and Tigris. I know there is strategy involved in every game I play but this has been my first experience where if I wasn't planning three moves ahead I was lost, and then I'd lose. My wife doesn't like it too much but the other two guys we play with do so it gets its share of plays. It lives up to its high rating!

So there I am. Five separate games with a couple expansions. I love modular boards, resource and hand management, I don't mind using dice and I enjoy tile placement. Anyone have any insight as to what my next step should be? Oh, and I would prefer not to play games that are only card based, though I'll probably be buying Bohnanza! soon...

You might want to consider trying this one. Simple rules and lots of tension, wrenching choices throughout the game. A game that appeals to both gamers and non-gamers. And its got nice game components.

The first game to come to mind when I thought of tile placement was Samurai. The board is 3 pieces which adjust depending on how many players there are so it plays well even with 2. It's light to medium strategy.

Trias is another game I recommend often since it's an interesting concept which is also fun. It's also a medium weight strategy (hmm, make that tactical?) game which plays well with 2-5 players.

Hansa isn't tile placement but it's a good game for learning to manage a small number of actions each turn while wanting to do more. It's good with 2, maybe even better than with 4 as that tends to leave a person feeling like they have no control. I enjoy the interaction between markets and goods and the decisions needed to balance them.

I think you might like O Zoo Le Mio. Adds Auctions, income and battling for majorities to a carcassonne like tile laying game. A quick game for 2-4 people. Each person builds their own zoo with the tiles they buy in the auctions. A neat mechanism solves ties.
