This geeklist is by request. With my recent geeklist on WW II tactical series two folks asked why I didn't include naval. Truth is there aren't a ton of game series that cover WW II naval and those that are are as much operational as tactical. Mind you, it's an area worth exploring however but I figure rather than just limit it to WW II let's make it naval conflict in general.

So here's the basic premise for this list and since I'm not a huge naval wargamer I am going to need help from folks to fill it in. What we are looking for are game series covering naval conflict. Now by series I mean a number of games and expansions where you can play a variety of scenarios. To qualify for the list a game should have at least 2 games in the series or one base game and an expansion.

The game series I think of when I think naval. Tons of ship counters and tons of scenarios. Some folks don't care much for the more simple tactical part of the game but I like it. I consider the game to be an operational one and think the scenarios would bog down a bit if the tactical operations were complex to the point of being a completely separate game.

Pretty much the same system as it's WW II counterpart set in WW I. Some really interesting stuff in this series including Zeppelins which is very cool. I also like that they did an expansion covering the Spanish American War.

I'm a civil war buff and I so wanted to like this game but found the rules just to sticky. I have the Excalibre edition of the base game and the expansion and keep thinking I should trade it.

Miniature collectible series. The minis look great but the rules are much to simplistic for my taste. Not a historical simulation by any means. I know several people who buy the packs for this and just use the ships with one of the many miniature naval rules available.

I have played Ironbottom Sound and I have enjoyed it a lot. The tension of the Guadalcanal night actions is quite exciting.

This WW2 Solomon Islands game does not have a tactical map, but there is a section of the rules that deal with a tactical system to resolve the battles. The other game in the series is C.V. , which is about Midway. It's very detailed, and long.

Perhaps the best simulation of naval warfare in the age of sails, although as a 2-player game only suited for small encounters due to its complexity.
Expanded by Rebel Seas (US independence) and Monsoon Seas (Anglo-French war in India).

3W released 3 titles in the Modern Naval Battles series, which was an upgraded version of Avalon Hill's Naval War.

Vessels from each major class of warship (destroyers and larger, plus submarines) are featured in the series. Campaign rules were also written.

The games' designer, Dan Verssen, has developed an updated version of the game, produced by his self-named game company.

A series of 'Total Naval' games covering surface, carrier, submarine & small unit actions at 100 yards/hex; 90 sec/turn. Other games in the series were:
Kriegsmarine
Scnellboote
Torpedo

Typical SimCan fare with all intelligence & effort grinding to halt at the concept stage, leaving actual play plodding & ridiculous.

I guess my ... now 6 ... naval boardgames count as a series.

First, there was Sky, Sea and Jungle then Leyte Gulf Naval Chess Game then Lion's Lair: Malta Convoy Battles 1940-42 then Murmansk Run: Arctic Convoys to Russia then Battle of Midway, June 1942: Minigame and now Matapan.

Instead of their battle board tactical/battle resolution systems, you can instead use my Naval Action: A Simple Combat Resolution System for Model Fleets of the 1898-1945 Era naval miniatures rules for surface combat, and for the Malta, Murmansk, and Matapan ships I have individual deck plan ship pieces. (I should do those for the Pacific too.)
