There's a bunch of geeklists about solitaire games around already, but none is strictly about solitaire WAR games. Since users more frequently specifically ask for recommendations of solitaire war games than solitaire games in general, and having responded to at least five of such prompts, I decided to create this geeklist. I hope it will serve as a reference. Expansions are included in the base game entry only when they have separate BGG entries.

How this list is ordered:

1) Boxed games. In chronological order, but games which use the same or similar systems are listed in sequence.

2) Magazine games. Ordered alphabetically and by publisher.

3) Print'n'Play games. Disorder.

Since I virtually have no experience with Print'n'Play or Magazine games, I only list them without providing comments. I would be glad, if another user with more experience in PnP or Mag games added more entries or singled out a particular game listing it as an separate entry, but unfortunately the best I can do to express my gratitude for this is by giving a single lousy thumb-up.
thumbsup

Please also note that this list is strictly about war games which are primarily meant to be played solitaire. For example Up Front, although containing a few rules (or hints) on solitaire play, should not be on this list.

I also want to restrict this game on games about real or hypothetical wars (conflict simulations), so
please leave fantasy or science fiction games off this list!

I used this link as reference: http://alsandor.net/jeux/sololistrev1.html

Last update: August 29th 2009.

(I.e. update from me. Many thanks to all the people adding games!)

The expanded reimplementation of the classic B-17 Queen of the Skies. More targets, more bombers types, more enemy fighters. This is an immersive experience. Can you survive 25 missions, five miles above occupied Europe?

B-17 Flying Fortress Leader is a WWII strategic bombing solitaire game that takes place in the European Theater of Operations (ETO).
In B-17 Leader, you are in command of the Eighth Air Force stationed in England, charged with reducing Germany's ability to wage war. Your primary mission is to destroy the Luftwaffe to ensure a successful D-Day landing, but multiple secondary missions are also required to help advance the fronts in multiple theaters.

You will have multiple historic Bomber Groups composed of B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, and B-26 Marauders. Optional B-29 Superfortress and B-25 Mitchell Bomber Groups are included. Your Bomber Groups will be protected on their journey in Luftwaffe controlled airspace by Fighter Groups composed of MK VII Spitfires, P-47 Thunderbolts, P-38 Lightnings, and P-51 Mustangs. Your groups can progress in experience levels from Newbie to Ace, but may be Reassigned as they gain experience. Optional Renown Commanders provide groups with special skills and tactics, but could be killed during the Campaign.

You will be targeting many different types of targets, including Airfields, Aircraft Factories, U-Boat Pens, Ball Bearing Factories, Oil Refineries, and V-Weapon sites. Recon Aircraft can be sent to improve your aim point and allow you to pick the optimal path to reduce Flak damage.

Opposing you will be Luftwaffe Squadrons, generated from multiple Aircraft Factories, that will intercept your Escorts and Bombers to and from the targets. Luftwaffe Squadron Bandits can be BF-109s, FW-190s, BF-110s, and/or ME-410s. Targeting their Aircraft Factories will reduce the number of new Luftwaffe Squadrons deployed each month, but destroyed factories are quickly rebuilt, and new Aircraft Factories are periodically being added. Attacking and destroying Airfields helps reduce the number of deployed Luftwaffe Squadrons. Victory Points are earned for each destroyed Target.

Various German Defense Commanders will try different tactics and technologies in an effort to stop your campaign. Each German commander will also have a varying range of Luftwaffe responses to your attack, from Poor to All Out.

To help mitigate the Luftwaffe threat, you can accomplish Secondary Mission objectives that can advance the Mediterranean and Russian fronts to force Germany to send more Luftwaffe Squadrons into those theaters. You can also purchase various technologies to increase the odds of a successful mission, like Drop Tanks, Jammers, and H2X Radar sets. An option to invest and field the P-80 Shooting Star jet fighter is included. Once the Allied Invasion has begun, many Secondary Missions will help advance the Allies to Berlin to end the war.

Your Bombers will take damage and be destroyed, but monthly Replenishment units will help bring your groups up in strength.
If you have played other Leader Games, many aspects of B-17 Leader will be familiar. But due to the Strategic nature of your bombing campaign, new gameplay aspects are introduced.

Successor to Skies Above the Reich. In this designed for solitaire game you manage a staffel of FW-190s defending Germany from combat boxes of B-24s.

It is a stand alone game, but if you have Skies Above the Reich you can combine the 2 games.

On Facebook Wargamers, Les Haskell asked what cooperative wargames were out there, and with the bigger size mapsheet which fills the end of a gaming table, you can have as many as 3 players on the same Axis or Russian side - Army Groups North, Center, and South or Northern, Western, and Southwest Fronts - playing for a team rather than individual win.

Cool things about your side being the Russians against the Nazi German robot: 1. You can yell epithets and curses at it without fear of being punched out and hauled off. 2. You can play Shostakovich's 5th (Great) and 7th Leningrad Symphonies as you struggle to stop the fascist juggernaut. (If you play the Axis, please be less disrespectful of our Eastern Front ally who lost 27 million people in this, and the game has a dedication, as usual for mine.)

This is in contrast to Phalanx's Race To the Rhine and Race to Moscow games, where the army/group commanders compete to see who can get across/there first.

Here is my BGG games description for Robot Barbarossa:

This would be a very conventional 11 hexes Warsaw to Moscow monthly turns corps-to-army level Barbarossa game ... except for its either-way solitaire and unknown Russian strength and/or order of battle mechanic, which can throw either Axis or Russian plans and play to the wind.
There are 3 army group - Army Group North, Army Group Center, and Army Group South - and front - Northern, Western, Southwestern - sectors, to keep the robots' advancing/attacking and defending operations in line. A team can therefore be as many as 3 (cooperating) players.

It still can be a good little 2-player game or you could even have the game play itself and move the pieces for it.

(Writing the rules for a solitaire hex-and-counter game is VERY challenging ... a designing holy grail.)

If you are the/a "live" Axis player, watch out for the 2-factor ("T-34&KV-1") Russian mechanized corps, which by the rules can take down the German panzerkorps in the exchanges ... and you don't know whether you'll be facing 2, 4, or 6 of those. devil

The defence Thermopylae Pass by Leonidas and his 300 Spartans became immortal and made it to the popular culture via the movie. ‘This is Sparta!’ is now often a cry of those, who want to make a point. Yet, there is another milestone in the history of Greece, which deserves no less attention and interest. That’s a story of 3000 defenders of one Greek town.

We’ve buried three enemy armies in front of our city walls, yours will be the fourth, they wrote to the commander of the imperial forces, who laid siege to their city. The siege lasted for a year and the imperial forces were just to leave as their supplies and morale run really down. They didn’t know, the besieged faced similar problems. And as it happened at Thermopylae, the defenders were betrayed and their plan for a breakthrough through the enemy lines, sold to the besiegers. Those who survived became slaves of their imperial masters.

The history of the defence of Messolonghi, for that’s the name of the city, was no less dramatic than those of other sieges known from history or fantasy books. The sieges of Helm’s Deep, Vicksburg, Sevastopol or Malta all come to mind when playing a game on the subject, to be published by PHALANX and currently at the Kickstarter.

Freedom! a masterpiece, designed by renowned and well regarded Vangelis Bagiartakis, illustrated by a promising artist of the new generation Bartek Jędrzejewski went through development process at the publishing house, which applied their magic, to produce a great looking game.

Freedom! is a card-driven, siege operation & tactics w-euro game, featuring asymmetric play. A test of will, endurance and tactics between the besieged freedom fighters and the besieging imperial forces, aimed at crushing the rebellion. Based on the real story of the Siege of Messolonghi, which became a foundation of modern Greek state, Freedom! will both entertain and educate even if history is all Greek to you.

Freedom! by PHALANX. A true labour of love.
1-2 Players | 90 min | Age: 14+

The Kickstarter campaign is active now and will end on April 10th.

Solitare variant is described here.

A light wargame about the crisis of the III century, in which Emperor Diocletian shared his power with other three co-Emperors in order to fight internal revolts and external armies more efficiently. A truly cooperative challenge! They did succeed in saving the Roman Empire at that moment, BTW.

The game has the same rules for 1 to 4 players (all four Emperors are always in play, as they actually were), and as a consequence it is being played solitaire a lot! It shows up regularly in the solitaire monthly geeklists.

It comes with five official variants (one of them competitive that can be played even solitaire!), there is a three-module expansion (Tetrarchia: Dux), and I designed four historical scenarios, for those who want to stick even closer to history. So plenty of replayability.

I know there is already an entry for the second edition released around 2015, but this second printing of the second edition, released in 2018, includes a rebuilt or significantly modified (and likely improved) AI bot, Erasmus 2.0. The newest version of the AI bot is supposed to be easier to run. Otherwise, the game is largely unchanged.

I felt making an entirely new entry was appropriate because this new change in the ease of running and understanding the bot was the primary reason why I just bought the game.

The game's general complexity had made me apprehensive about getting it for the past several years, but one of the major reasons why I never bought the 2015 version was because I heard that the bot was confusing to run.
