There's a bunch of geeklists about solitaire games around already, but none is strictly about solitaire WAR games. Since users more frequently specifically ask for recommendations of solitaire war games than solitaire games in general, and having responded to at least five of such prompts, I decided to create this geeklist. I hope it will serve as a reference. Expansions are included in the base game entry only when they have separate BGG entries.

How this list is ordered:

1) Boxed games. In chronological order, but games which use the same or similar systems are listed in sequence.

2) Magazine games. Ordered alphabetically and by publisher.

3) Print'n'Play games. Disorder.

Since I virtually have no experience with Print'n'Play or Magazine games, I only list them without providing comments. I would be glad, if another user with more experience in PnP or Mag games added more entries or singled out a particular game listing it as an separate entry, but unfortunately the best I can do to express my gratitude for this is by giving a single lousy thumb-up.
thumbsup

Please also note that this list is strictly about war games which are primarily meant to be played solitaire. For example Up Front, although containing a few rules (or hints) on solitaire play, should not be on this list.

I also want to restrict this game on games about real or hypothetical wars (conflict simulations), so
please leave fantasy or science fiction games off this list!

I used this link as reference: http://alsandor.net/jeux/sololistrev1.html

Last update: August 29th 2009.

(I.e. update from me. Many thanks to all the people adding games!)

Dog Sector is a beer-and-pretzels level, solitaire war game that simulates the famous WW II Normandy amphibious landing in 1944. American forces from off-map transports assault the beach. Those units not swamped during the approach attempt to move up the beach toward the German-occupied bluffs, clearing obstacles as they advance. Some units (tanks, sharpshooters, bazookas) execute ranged fire at fortified German units. Naval Forward Observers guide ship-to-shore fire support. The Player’s assault force faces German defensive fire (solitaire, system-controlled) from machine guns and anti-tank emplacements, panzerfaust and rifle fire, as well as off-map German artillery. When the bluffs are reached, American units must clear the trenches by assault. The game tension is visceral as your brave Joes are pinned down or hit by the intense German fire. You’ll grit your teeth as a Combat Engineer team deploys Bangalore torpedoes to clear obstacles while under fire, and cheer when a German unit is taken out by a tank or by a ship’s guns directed by one of your forward observers. How many sections of German trench will your men be able to clear in the twelve, heart-pounding game turns? Will you be a private or a colonel at the end of the game? Good luck, soldier!

WORLD WAR ZED: USA pits you as the leader of the United States against an outbreak of Zombies or similar – called “Zeds” in the game. You must manage population centers, farmlands, refugees and the scientific and military response to the outbreak. Use the Army, Marines, and National Guard to fight the spreading Zeds. Weapons at hand against the prolific zombies include air strikes, nuclear detonations, and biochemical attacks. World War Zed: USA is a different kind of war game which will appeal to many regular war gamers as a light break from more serious and historical slogs and has the cross-generation appeal to serve as a game to bring family members of all ages together at the table for a fun, if slightly scary, evening. Designed by David Kershaw (Don't Tread on Me!, Albuera 1811, Vietnam Solitaire) with wonderfully comic-book style art by Jonathan Carnehl.

Jeff Davis: The Confederacy at War is a solitaire board war game designed by Charles S. Roberts Award-winner R. Ben Madison. You play President Jefferson Davis, managing the Confederate government and the Southern war effort. Your choices help determine the fate of great armies and the titanic struggle between Lee and Grant as well as peripheral or more dispersed campaigns like Morgan’s Ohio raid and Indian Territory. Decide which famous generals are worthy of scarce artillery and ironclads resources, while you unleash bushwhackers behind Union lines and rush reinforcements into battle on your rickety rail network. Back in Richmond, you’ll push the Confederate Congress to enact your reforms and overcome the inefficiency of States’ Rights as you defend key cities vital to your political survival. Dispatch your cabinet members as economic troubleshooters to prop up agriculture, industry and infrastructure for the war effort. Slavery is a major factor in your economy, but you will pay for most of your actions through the cat-and-mouse game of blockade running. Choose which armies to supply or if to invade the North as you calculate where the next Union hammer might fall. Can you hold out long enough to trigger British and French intervention? Re-fight the Civil War as Jeff Davis!

Amerika Bomber: Evil Queen of the Skies is a solitaire, tactical level game which places you in command of a hypothetical, yet historically-based bomber aircraft during a frightening look at what might have been in World War II. Each turn consists of one sortie, during which the player will fly a mission to bomb the mainland of the United States. As the player progresses, he may choose to upgrade to even more advanced bombers in this alternate history game. Amerika Bomber is based on the popular, action-packed B17: Queen of the Skies system and pays homage to Glen Frank’s original system, but with streamlined routines and a few twists. It builds a strong narrative around the pilot as you look to earn skills, rise in rank through promotion, receive awards and survive a dangerous year above America.

1-4 player game with solitaire mode included.

Airfix Battles is an introductory World War II battle game that you can play out of the box with die-cut cardboard counters or upgrade with Airfix models of military vehicles.

To build an army, you can either draw cards randomly from your Force Deck or select the ones that you wish. You then set up the battle using the step-by-step instructions in the Mission book and you're ready to play. Each player has a hand of Command Cards to move and make their forces fight or to bring in airstrikes or artillery support.

Another P&P, R&W game. You're only required to print 2 pages to play, once you have learned the rules. All you need then are 8 dice and a pencil with an eraser. You could also use cubes if you dont wan't to use a pencil. A nice little brutal game, but currently with a very bad translation of the rules from latin spanish to english. The designers are currently working on a 2.0 for the english rules with a better translation.

A solitaire postcard game of the intense fighting for the Tractor Factory in the Battle for Stalingrad. The player takes the role of the Germans as he maneuvers panzers, infantry, and elite pioneers into the ruins to hunt down the Soviets. Ambushes, snipers, and tough decisions await the Germans as they push deeper into the city.

The longer the game lasts the more Soviet Reinforcements infiltrate through the ruins to surround and cut off the attackers. To win the player will have to master warfare in the most brutal of all WWII battlefields

Rattenkrieg is literally "War of the Rats" and is the name given to irregular and deadly city fighting. Brought published by Turning Point Simulations and designed by Steven Cunliffe who also made The Hell of Stalingrad.

Rattenkrieg inspired the game Savage Streets, published in Special Ops magazine #1 (2011).

56 cards per deck. One deck required.

You are held in Colditz Castle, a WWII German POW camp reserved for the elite of escapers and special prisoners. Can you Escape from Colditz Castle?

1-6 players age 7+

SINGLE PLAYER:
The object of the Single Player game is to piece together one or more escape chains to allow a total of three Escapers (together or one at a time) a ‘HOME RUN’ to freedom before the Guard draw pile runs out. The escape chains are achieved by forming a column of sequential cards in front of you numbered 1-4. Upon your third Escaper escaping, you win the game against the Guards! With an optional Expansion Pack 8 Escapers should be the target.

Man-to-man solitaire game from solo-game designer Gottardo Zancani. Rattenkrieg simulates up close and personal combat in Stalingrad, circa 1942. The game features a robust AI bot and an innovative way, based on the actual size of a counter, to calculate to where a unit may move. Published by Flying Pig Games and included in Yaah! A Solitaire Game of the USAAF Strategic Bombing Campaign against Germany: 1943-1945

In 1943, the US Army Air Force (USAAF) began a strategic bombing campaign with a small but growing number of aircraft. By 1945 it had, for all practical purposes, swept the German air force (Luftwaffe) from the skies, and was bombing targets throughout the shrinking Third Reich almost with impunity. But getting to that point was no easy task…

You, as commander, 8th Air Force, have a very full plate! Early on, insure victory in the Battle of the Atlantic by bombing submarine bases in western France, then support the eventual Allied invasion of occupied France by bombing railroads and river crossings throughout France and western Germany. Failure in these critical bombing campaigns is not acceptable. Long-term, you’ll need to pulverize Germany’s aircraft factories and oil facilities to reduce the Luftwaffe’s aircraft production and support, and win the war by blasting Germany’s heavy industry. There will be more challenges along the way, from providing heavy support for the D-Day invasion and Normandy breakout, to suppressing the demoralizing V1 and V2 attacks on England, to assisting your Soviet ally by attacking German army staging areas in the east. In the meantime, the Luftwaffe is developing advanced jet and rocket technology that may tip the tide of the air war if you have not crippled their industrial capacity.

A Solitaire Game of the Strategic Bombing Campaign against Japan: 1944-1945

On April 18, 1942, Jimmy Doolittle led a squadron of carrier-based B25 Mitchells on a daring surprise raid on Tokyo. The raid, conducted as revenge for the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor four months earlier, caused little damage but was a harbinger of the destruction from the air that was destined to befall the islands of Japan…

By 1944, US forces had seized island bases in the Marianas close enough to Japan to employ the new long range B29 Superfortresses in a high-stakes strategic bombing campaign against Japanese industries and cities. So began the short (late 1944 until August 1945) but incredibly destructive life of the United States Army Air Force’s (USAAF’s) 20th Air Force.

Your objective as you take command of the 20th Air Force in September 1944 is nothing short of reducing Japan’s cities, large and small, to smoldering rubble! To do it you’ve got the powerful and sophisticated B29, in ever increasing numbers and with flight crews improving in combat and navigation skills, and a research effort you direct to develop more and more sophisticated weapons. While initially you must focus on clearing the sky of Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) fighters and blasting Japanese war industries with high explosive bombs, eventually you will develop incendiary bombs which rapidly reduce Japan’s combustible wooden and paper cities to ashes, and their dispersed war industries to ruins. Simultaneously, demolish her ports and kamikaze bases, and mine her waters. In the meantime, research marches on, perhaps you will obtain the ultimate weapon, the Atomic Bomb? Hopefully you will, because you are in a race against time – if Japan can hold out long enough the US will have to launch “Operation Olympic”, the costly planned invasion of Japan, and your strategic bombing campaign will have failed.
