I just had a wonderful weekend.

It started with me attending the wedding of two of my co-workers. They're both Special Education Assistants at the middle school I work at. They met there 3 years ago, and after a bumpy couple of months of courting, have been madly in love ever since.

They finally were able to tie the knot, with a lovely service at the church they both attend, followed by a reception at a local restaurant.

Strangely, the wedding saying "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" applied to the balance of my weekend, particularly with my wargaming experiences on Sunday...

Firstly, congratulations to Jamaro and Stephanie English, married on October 11, 2008.

No, they're not gamers.

The reception was held at The Odyssey, a landmark Los Angeles restaurant, known for its breathtaking view of the San Fernando Valley.

Something Old

I spent the balance of Saturday punching out counters. It had been many, many years since I had done this for my ASL collection, and I had amassed a number of modules since I last played the game...TWELVE YEARS AGO! As of this writing, I'm only about 1/3 of the way through the 20+ countersheets from 8 sets.

Most frustrating was finding the black SS counters in A Bridge Too Far: ASL Historical Module 6, effectively duplicating the entire German OOB.

Something New

I met up with my buddy, Tim, on Sunday. This game was the primary reason for the get-together.

I had watched the game in the past, but this was my first time to actually play it. We played The Lion of Winter scenario.

After an initial turn, my dice abandoned me, while Tim's simply had trouble missing. My forces were virtually wiped out. At one point I had more nobles in The Tower of London than on the field. And before I could do anything, Tim had won decisively on Turn 3 with 32 Victory Points.

Something Borrowed

I got to christen my copy of this game at last. However, upon opening it, I discovered that my set of dice were not to be found in the box. I had to borrow dice from Tim in order to play. I took the Germans.

It took a while to pace myself. The old-style forced combat rule kept me from being too aggressive, and forced Tim to concede ground far too frequently.

In the end, the game effectively came down to an extended assault on Leningrad over the last 2 turns. I was able to wear down the defences, with plenty of expendible, Finnish troops, and took it on the last turn to get the 6-5 victory.

Something Blue

Between Warriors of God and Defiant Russia, I introduced Tim to this golden oldie of Avalon Hill's. It had been about 15 years since I had broken out this game, and it was a blast getting to play it again.

We played 3 rounds. The first two games, we exchanged wins playing The Falklands scenario (I figured he'd get a kick out of playing a British sub). Then we played the final scenario, and his Soviet subs simply overwhelmed my American Destroyer group. He sank all 3 surface ships while only losing 2 of his subs, and escaping before my SSN could make it into the battle,

All in all, it was a great day of wargaming, and it tied up a weekend with a strange, but entertaining, connection between the two days.
