I came up with the idea for this list last night while we were playing Rette Sich Wer Kann. It had been a while since I played, so I glanced through the rules and came upon one of the rules that always made me laugh.

I've seen rulebooks go overboard with their rules, being verbose, or too cutesy. But every once in a while, I'll come across a rule that's very clever or makes me laugh out loud...

"All players discuss/argue/threaten among themselves over which boat should receive a leak."

(I mean, how many games tell you to argue?)

"If the selected boat has an open seat, the leak is placed there. However, if the selected boat is full. Somebody is going to be thrown out of the boat to make room for the leak. or, if you prefer, someone is going to fall through the leak. Either way its Good Bye to someone in the boat and that calls for another vote."

(and this was way before The Weakest Link)

I don't know if they carried this over into the rules for the new, I'm The Boss, version, but the original English translation included Rules of Engagement, including:

"Discussion of possible bargains and/or play of any influence cards (including Clan cards) is *NOT* allowed until the current player clearly announces that the current deal is actually open. No encouragement is allowed to affect the decision of whether the deal should be opened at all or not. (That is, the correct answer to even a simple observation of "Gee, if Brian opened that one, he and Will could just clean it up." is "Yes! He knows that! Shut up!!") The only exceptions to this are a Recruitment triple played as a forced discard and a STOP played in response to this."

This one went over particularly well with our group because we had a Brian in it.

We liked it so much that this rule made it into other games..."Yes! He knows that! Shut up!!"

Verbatim from the rules:

"When everyone has voted, the Dealer turns the Card Frame so it faces the Players and, with appropriate theatrical flourish, opens the Card Frame to reveal the REAL QUOTE—which he triumphantly reads aloud. (Anyone who slaps their forehead and claims that they were going to vote for the REAL QUOTE all along, but changed their mind at the last minute, loses one point.)"

This is my all time favorite rule. If someone is taking too long for their turn, the other players start to slowly chant,

"You're as slow as a dwarf, cowardly as an elf, and clumsy as a human!"

The player must take her turn before the chanting ends.

We have adopted this rule for every game that we play. Yeah, it is a little out of place chanting about dwarves and elves while playing Puerto Rico, but it works.

From the rules:

"You should have just enough counters to put 3 objects into every room with 3 left over. If you have way more counters you didn’t read the rules carefully enough and combined the Alien Incursion Counters with the basic game. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. Assuming you didn’t screw it all up, take the remaining three and set them aside without looking at them."

This isn't mentioned anywhere in the BGG page, but apparently the game doesn't actually come with the counterfeit money needed to play. Instead, each denomination is printed in the rules booklet, where players are instructed to photocopy that page and cut out the bills themselves.

That's right; the game asks you to counterfeit the counterfeit bills!

Not only that, the counterfeit bills are used in blind auctions. Which means that they're to be balled up in a fist. Which means that they'll be folded, spindled, and mutilated... just like, ahem, real counterfeit money.

What other game encourages you to destroy its components?

This game can be a riot for anyone who has ever played D&D. The rule for choosing the starting player captures everything I remember about D&D in a single sentence:

"Decide who goes first by rolling the dice and arguing about the meaning of this sentence and whether the fact that a word seems to be missing any effect."
