So, it's my job to buy, bring and teach all of the games that my group plays, and last night we sat down to play Goa. I had played the game a couple of years ago and had a pretty solid understanding of the rules, so rather than read too carefully I went from memory.

That was a bad idea. I sort of had it in my head that the production scoring was a la Knizia, in that you just got a few number of points for the whole board based on where your lowest grey block was. Well, you can imagine what that did to game play. We all went with the same strategy, and I "won" with 16 points. After, one of the other players went to the scoring page (where scoring is VERY CLEARLY spelled out for any moron) and suggested that maybe we did the scoring wrong. It's midnight on a school night, three hours later, and I felt like quite a dumbass.

So, I was hoping to hear of other teaching disaster moments. Not just to make me feel better, but out of general interest as well.Goa

I recently tried to teach some friends how to play this and only quickly glanced at the rules to refresh my memory. Turns out that I forgot the minor rule that adding sections on top of others raises the stock value by the level of the new building. Needless to say we never had enough money to do anything and the game ground to a screeching halt.

Oh well, I won't forget next time!

We busted this game out at a con semi-recently.

I've played this many times with family, and I plopped down to teach. I sorta half-ass skimmed the rules, and I started teaching, what turns out to be some sort of mishmashed half-recollected variant of Canasta+Hand & Foot+Phase 10+Category 5+Tichu+Agricola. I hadn't slept, in my own defense.

People who hadn't played before even stopped me and said "Dude that can't be right", so even after that I still flubbed some more rules.

I finally surrendered, and gave the deck to my Fiancee and told her she was in charge because I was clearly too stupid to even play a light card game at that point.

I was teaching how to play this and for someone reason assumed that the scoring was won by the one who had their score nearest to 0, rather than as negative as possible. Ever since we have referred to this game as 'Slightly Upset'! shake

When I last taught this game it took 3 turns before I realized I forgot to mention the income phase. Now whenever I teach a new game, I have to go through a "And when do we get paid?" ribbing.

I once play Vinci where the population for the civilisations was incorrectly explained, and each turn players were given additional population tokens equal to the start values.
Each player ended up with masses of population on the board, (we had to borrow tokens from other games), and no one declined any civilisations.
