This game seemed somewhat tailored to my tastes and quickly climbed the ladder after a few plays. It's short, easy, has lots of variables (accomplished with lots of cards and card types), allows interesting decisions turn after turn, has a good chunk of randomness which can be controlled, and has really low downtime. This game is fun to keep playing.

After acquiring this long-anticipated game, my wife and I found that we both really enjoyed the card combos and multiplayer solitaire feel. We quickly heaped up a bunch of plays. This is one of those rare games that has a very good game weight-to-time ratio, usually taking 40-50 minutes. Additionally, the luck-to-strategy ratio is good. While you can sometimes get hosed by the luck of the draw, the game is packed with interesting decisions.

This game is much like San Juan, which is also in my top ten.

I like the multiplayer solitaire feel of this game. I also think the "pay with your cards" mechanic is very clever, which is also seen in Race for the Galaxy. Scores also tend to be very close, which I dig. Cards with abilities are always a plus for me, and so San Juan fits the bill.

I'm not sure why, but this game is always a pleasure to play. It's one of those games that, regardless of win or loss, is so fun because of the gameplay process. It is very tactical, requiring interesting decisions for each turn. And it only takes about 45 minutes to finish despite the heavier weight of it. This game is so well-crafted. I find myself eager to play it again and again.

This was my first eurogame after Settlers. I wouldn't be surprised if nostalgia has at least some influence on keeping this game at the top. I still haven't found any games that include so many interesting mechanics and fun player interactions. Citadels has similarities to San Juan in the way the purple districts work, but I've never seen anything with such an intriguing role-selection mechanic.

My favorite set of roles takes out the Assassin and Thief, replacing them with the Witch and Tax Collector.

I still can't figure out why people steal from the Merchant. Really - what is the logic there?

I am continually astonished at how such a simple game can have such interesting decisions on each turn. Everyone's play area is open for viewing by all players. Your decisions have to take into account what everyone else is going for. And yet the decisions aren't too agonizing. The game plays quickly with little downtime. For a price of $7.77, you just can't go wrong with this excellent game. I am always up for a game of this.

I've always had a unique spot in my gamer's heart for this gem. I love how you have a hand of randomly drawn cards. Then, you have make those cards come to life on the ever-changing community board. You can play quick and run out of cards more quickly, or you can slow down your point-mongering to restock your hand. And if you're in last place because of bad luck, don't worry - you can swap out as many cards as you like for a fresh start. Colovini nailed it with Masons.

Who is that familiar looking guy on the cover?

It's another game with multiplayer solitaire gameplay! What's not to like? Build postal routes and compete for victory point counters. Select the right cards and use the right abilities to give yourself an edge. This is an easy gateway game with less randomness than Ticket to Ride. I'm almost always willing to play this one.

This was my first TTR game and remains my favorite to this day. Here's why:

- No tunnels
- Passengers give an alternative way to score points
- Separate short-route and long-route draw piles
- An interesting layout of routes
- Bonus points for the most completed tickets

TTR has lost its flavor with me because of the randomness which can make or break your game. Marklin Edition seems to have more opportunity for meaningful strategic decisions. Sure, you can still get hosed by the luck, but the decisions don't feel as meaningless as they do in vanilla TTR. I may someday discover that I'm wrong in my assessment, but so far, Marklin Edition continues to please.

I'm amazed at the way Mr. Wrede worked the mechanics out in this design. He managed to create a simulation game that plays in 30 minutes and ends with close scores every time. You have interesting decisions to make each turn. You're given a random set of choices and you need to decide what's best for you. This is also the only "take that" game I've been able to enjoy playing because it's somewhat light-hearted. I've seen players forced into kingmaking in this game - which no gamer ever wants to have to do - but the game is over quickly enough that the pain is minimized. The mechanics here are unique and clever with the phases, relatives, and the lava placement. There is a lot of game packed into a short amount of time. Always fun.

Runner-up

This is the only cooperative game in my collection. It takes about 35 minutes to play and has everyone working together to save the world from disease. Working together makes this game so fun. The pressure builds throughout the game and victory is narrow each time. This is an excellent design.
