Another end of month Saturday and another meet-up for us boardgamers in Sactown. For more info regarding our little (well...kinda big now) meet-up group, visit http://www.meetup.com/sacramento-boardgamers/.

Now...on with the games played!

I left the shin-dig a bit early and will miss the evening and late games, so feel free to add them.

5 were just getting started when I arrived - I believe the China map. Some of the players were Mark, Frank and Jason. Not sure who won, but they played this game for quite awhile - they said the map and oredering of the power plants was part of the blame.

DK was walking Brad through this Leonhard & Matthews 2p as I arrived. The race was close, but Nixon (DK) rewrote history in this finish.

The table next to DK and Brad playing 1960 was Spencer and Afshin duking it out during the Cold War in yet another Matthews 2p. This game was finished before both the Power Grid and 1960 group. Poor Spencer (USA) - he must've gotten mopped up by Afshin (Russians).

I must thank Spencer for letting me borrow his copy so I can try this one out!

As the odd man out, I had to walk around and 'watch' the three games being set-up/played. Fortunately, Jean and Scott and David M arrived shortly after.

Now there are 4 and we sat down to play the numero uno. I was hoping to use the I or K decks and to my surprise Scott, Jean and David only play with all four decks combined. I suggested the draft variant and they agreed. I was able to pull out the victory with 33 points (no empty spaces, 4 peeps, and 4 stone houses).

I don't know if I'd request to play with all the decks combined, but it made for an interesting card draft selection.

Agricola started last of the 4 games AND finished first. I wanted to get in Spencer's Shadow Hunter's so the same four got in this quick play first. Both Jean and I were behind in points, but thanks to our aristocrats, we jumped to a comfortable lead. I was able to hold off Jean by a close margin.

I'm surprised at how little play this game gets in our group. I think it's great and will keep it packed for a bit to see if I can get more bites.

Sigh....it looks as though there will be no Shadow Hunters for me as Spencer's Twilight Struggle ended in an awkward time and he got in a game of Fury of Dracula with Afshin and a couple others. Afshin took control of Dracula and they were off. The game was close all the way through. Unfortunately, I don't recall who won.

The Power Grid group jumped into this dicey Euro. Mark went with the build-as-many-huts-as-possible strategy and was victorious.

I was packed and ready to go when Nate tempted me with my binky. I joined Nate, Brad, and DK. The score was close between Nate, Brad and myself after the second scoring (though I had a stockpile of resources and money). Once we passed the second scoring, I pushed the provost forward every round to end it faster and I was abe to stay off the competitors. I'm glad I was able to get in another play of my all-time fave.

Sorry Jeff. This got played by 8, and once again I enjoyed it. We played the variant where we used 9 cards (all 3 hunters, all 3 shadow, and 3 neutrals (all but Bob)), but only dealt out 8 (so there was one unknown card that was not used). Turned out the "dead" card was Emi, a hunter.

Charles (played by Nate) was (once again) the first to be killed (just like our first game). Daniel screamed, and it turned out to be Brad (who was Daniel last game). Afshin was Allie and he had to reveal himself early for the heal, and the Vampire (Scott) also revealed relatively early so he could start sucking up blood and healing himself. Ultimately I revealed myself as the Werewolf (mainly because I was afraid Scott with his machine gun would unwittingly kill me) and Scott and I started hunting the two revealed neutrals. Daniel was killed and then DK (who I think was George) was also killed. David M. was the last hunter, but couldn't stop the two revealed shadows and the Unknown (Jeanne) from killing Allie. A victory for the shadows.

Once again, the game was marked by people attacking each other long before anyone had a clue who anyone was, which may not be the best strategy, but it sure is a lot of fun.

I had hoped playing the varient would make it more difficult to figure out who was who in the end game, since it's not as easy to use the process of elimination. But this didn't turn out to be the case. It seems that by that stage of the game, it's usually pretty easy to guess who everyone is based on who they are attacking.

Seven of us (everyone from the Shadow Hunters game except David M) ended the night with a game of Fearsome Floors. Somehow, fate saw if fit to bestow the "geek" team to me. Although the X-files geek was the first to get out of the dungeon and safely back to his mother's basement, the trekkie geek was the first to be killed permenantly. Try as I might, I could not save the Buffy geek. Afshin, playing the cop team (I think), pulled out the win.

There was a great couple of moments where Scott blocked the exit and a huge crowed crowded at the doorway, waiting for the monster to arrive and rip some people to shreds. Scott got his guy out just in time, but I think of the 6 or so people there only 2 or 3 actually got killed.

Brad and I threw down with some Punic violence before 1960.

I took Hannibal, and Brad the Romans. I decided early on that I was not going to fall in to the trap of sieging every city on the way to Rome, and to stay focused on my objective. Of course, I was a bit TOO focused, as Hannibal was already across the Alps before I realized I had forgotten to separate Hannibal's subordinates to form a supply line. Brad on the other hand, managed a sea assault on New Carthage and gained a descent foothold in Hispania.

So over the Alps, with no hopes of refilling his reinforcements, Hannibal decided to do a bonzi charge against Rome itself. As it so happened, Brad had been dealt a hand of all 1s, and couldn't activate a general to respond. A few lucky rolls later, and Rome was put to the torch as the Consuls watched.

Carthaginian win turn two.
