Another list, but this time of the most complicated games. Ganes whose rulebooks take an age to read. Games which you have to study for seemingly (or actually) days to learn just how to complete just ONE game. Games which are, IMHO, better handles with computers.

I do not mean this list for games like Go, and Chess, which are easy to learn but difficult to master.

These are the complexity rating 11/10 games.

I shall start this list with just two games and ask you geeks to add too it.

Advanced Squad Leader. More a life style than a game. This is a game too far for me.

Avalon Hill`s "Rise and Decline of the Third Reich". I have this and it sits in a cupboard under the stairs. This sort of game is best played with a computer to handle all the rules.

Might as well add ASL's sparring partner, the similarly binder-challenged SFB.

So what DOES happen when you drive over tire spikes while fishtailing up onto a curb and hitting a lamp post and 2 pedestrians simultaniously? ... Ah yes... here it is on page 273 of the manual.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great game if you have the time and can find all of the out of print resources.

60 chapter of rules, the 60th one just for the Rommel counter. Not the largest game ever (it has 5 huge map and 1800 counters while War in Europe has almost the double of that) nor the most complicated rulebook (Air War is more complex), but the mix of rules, size and individual accounting for each counter makes it the most complex boardgame ever. IMHO.

Lightning fast real life action reduced to a mindbendingly complicated, mindnumbingly slow simulation.

It did give you a chance to fly jet fighters against dragons and UFOs, however.

I think EU counts

It's not just that this is a huge monster game, but that it has so much admin and complexity. To the point that this is a real pain to try and play Solo. Which is a great pity as most of us will not play it with others due to it's length and need for six players

Of course it has already been made into two Computer games. They are pretty good but are in Pausable Real Time and don't play like the original board game at all.

Produced by the same company as Europa Universalis, this does all of WWI with several rule books.

I really struggled to get my head round this one set during the Mexican Revolution. And this is supposed to be updated and improved second edition. No doubt someone will tell me it’s all quite straightforward really but it now sits in a lonely part of my attic unloved and unplayed.
