Let's face it; especially in gaming groups, a lot of the rules to board games are a shared oral history. Usually starting with the person who bought the game (and maybe they learned from someone else...), these often complicated sets of ultimatums are passed from person to person with very few consultations back to the actual rulebook. Unfortunately, that means that if a rule is missed somewhere along the way, you may have dozens of people who never knew it existed!

Or even if many people have read the rules, there are just some rules that turn out to be some sort of collective mental blind-spot: somehow, everyone you know has been playing it wrong for months or years! It isn't until someone (generally a new player) reads the rulebook to check on some other rule, or just because they're bored, that everyone realizes their mistake. And when you point it out to others in the group, you're met with disbelief or utter shock at the sheer number of times you all have gotten that rule wrong.

This GeekList is dedicated to pointing out those rules that somehow slip under the radar for not just you, but nearly everyone you know. Please feel free to add any games your group has had such problems with; maybe we'll all learn something!

At the end of a scenario, when you determine who the next ringbearer is, they get two Hobbit cards immediately. Makes a HUGE difference toward the end of the game.

When either the White or Black deck runs out, you don't just shuffle the discards of that deck to make a new draw pile, you ALSO shuffle the discards of the OTHER deck back into that one's draw pile.

EDIT:

A new one I picked up recently that we've been playing incorrectly for quite awhile:

-Drawing cards at Camelot is a Quest Action, as is fighting Siege Engines. This means that you cannot draw cards, then sacrifice a life to fight a Siege Engine, as that is doing two of the same type of action. Similarly, if you're the guy who moves for free, you can't draw cards, move, and then play a card on the quest you just moved to.

When you're using the expansion: if you draw an Excalibur/Grail/Lancelot&Dragon card that causes a siege engine to be deployed (since that quest is finished), that card is REMOVED FROM THE GAME and is not shuffled back into the Black deck ever again.

It's easy to remember to drop the Shadow Track by 2 if a Town Elder dies during the game...

except when it happens during the final Showdown.

Also, I just learned this morning that when an allegedly "Good" Town Elder dies, all of their Secret cards are revealed. Whoops.

So...uh...be careful with the Town Elder rules, eh?

When you choose an action, you can discard a card (without effect) to add one die to that action space.

For example, there are 2 dice in the barrel district. You discard a card from your hand to make it 3 dice, and then place 3 cubes in the Barrel District.

How about a rule everyone remembers that doesn't actually exist?

I'm talking about the 'Free Parking' rule in Monopoly - you know, the one that says you seed the Free Parking space with $50, and everyone pays all fines to the 'Free Parking Fund', then whoever lands on that space gets the money.

Problem is, though everyone seems to think this is in the rulebook, it's actually a 'house rule'. Even worse, it's a house rule that extends the game horribly. So badly, in fact, that drawn-out games facilitated by the Free Parking rule are the main reason so many people hate, hate, hate Monopoly!

The latest official Monopoly rulebook even says, "A player landing on this place does not receive any money, property or reward of any kind. This is just a “free” resting place."

If you've never played Monopoly by the actual rules, I encourage you to dig around in the bureau drawers until you find them and try a game. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

If you think the game still drags, just add in the official 'Rules for a Short Game'.

Remember to also obey the 'no loaning money to your friends or giving them free rents in trades' rule.

Many believe the game is also much better if you add in a frequently-played house rule to auction off each property when it's landed on rather than letting the person who lands on it just buy it. It really balances the game.

It's always exciting to get a Development Card. You see what it is, you play it, and then you play another one from your hand and really go for the win, and . . .

Wait, you mean you don't? You have to wait a turn before you play that wonderful card you just picked?

And you can't play more than one development card at a time?

True! Maybe many of you out there knew that already, but somehow my husband and I (and our Saturday night gaming partner) didn't realize that. We played that way for YEARS until we discovered recently that we had been making those mistakes. shake

Played this for years, taught this to numerous people, and someone taught me a new rule just the other night. You can trade resources for commodities!! Holy crap! All those years of desperately building on wood and praying for paper, and I could have traded for it! I didn't believe it until reading the entire rulebook over again. I could have sworn that you have to keep resources and commodities completely seperate. Definitely makes ports a stronger element in the game.

Just got a copy of my very own (I heart math trades), and read the rules, only to find (to my great surprise) a few really important rules that had been missed when I had been taught the game (and, thus, that I missed when teaching the game to others blush )

1.) You may use Brick in place of Clay and Steel in place of Iron.
2.) You may only take a loan if you need the money to feed at harvest time or to pay interest on an existing loan. You may not choose to take a loan to, say, buy a building or pay an entry fee.
3.) You may not sell a building and buy it back on the same turn.

Okay, I've played this game a dozen and a half times, and others in my group have racked up about as many, as well. Most of us have read the rules at some point.

So how is it that until I stumbled across a post on BGG that mentioned this, not a single one of us knew that you cannot use Defense cards during a War?!?! This fundamentally changes the way we play the game, I think, because wars often seemed to not be worth the risk when Defense cards could be in play.
