Thanks all for another fun Alternate Boardgames event yesterday! Steve had been soliciting people for Descent campaign game on the group e-mail list, and was joined by Peter, Jessie and first-time visitor Tom. In Steve's words the game featured "lots of death"!

The set up looked impressive. Something I'd like to check out some time.

Jimmy and Amy broke out Ingenious and invited Matthew and I to play. This was a first play for Matt. It was a little bit of an odd game as people raced to gobble up points but didn't play very defensively. I rushed up through five Ingeniouses and had my sixth color at 17 when the table decided to get very defensive. Against me, anyway ...

Jimmy: 18
Mark: 17
Matt: 11
Amy: 7

Jimmy, Amy, Matt and I got back together for two games of Pandemic. Both games at the 'medium' setting.

Our first game was tense as we hit seven outbreaks pretty darn quickly; before we had any diseases cured. We spent the rest of the game walking on eggshells and managed to keep things going for quite a while (actually curing yellow, and Matt was holding the cards to cure red) but ultimately without the Researcher to help us move cards we failed.

But undeterred we tried a second time. In the second game I was the Researcher and Amy the Dispatcher and we worked together well to get the cards where they were needed, and with Matt dropping Research Centers all over and Jimmy taking care of treating the diseases we beat the game!

Eric was a HUGE help and posted his Saga recap as I was still trying to put the recap list together, but somehow it got lost! That's okay, I'm pretty sure I have the accurate scores right here.

The groups merged and Chris joined us for a six-player game of Citadels. At my request, we swapped out the Warlord for the Diplomat from the Dark City expansion. I personally like the Diplomat better because the Warlord role kind of forces you to 'take one for the team' without anything in return. The Diplomat can at least improve his districts.

I drew some very nice, expensive districts but Jimmy pushed the end game quickly and outscored my small, but prestigious citadel. Oh, and in every game there's one person who seems to get picked on even when it's not intentional. In this game it was Amy.

Jimmy: 27
Mark: 23
Eric: 18
Chris: 17
Chrissie: 16
Amy: 12

Eric, Chris, Peg and Chrissie took on Pandemic at the medium setting and scored a win! That's what I have in my notes but wasn't there also a first game that didn't go so well?

After the Pandemic table was set I pulled out Betrayal and in a moment of comedy the entire Pandemic table went "awwwww ..." Ha! I knew this would come out again (we didn't even bother putting it all away.

Brian had played this for the first time last month and was the one to ask for it. He was joined by myself, Matt, Paula and Laura.

Upon finding the dog, I ended up being the traitor! A werewolf! Fortunately for the heroes I and my doggie minion found ourselves far from the rest of the group and they had a couple of rounds to find the revolver and craft a silver bullet. UNfortunately for them, they missed when they had their chance and by the next round I had killed Laura and converted Paula into a Werewolf. Brian as Ox Bellows managed to hold out a few rounds, but ultimately succombed. The werewolves were the winners!

Were was Matt? Sadly Matt became obsessed with opening the safe for most of the first half of the game and managed to knock his physical skills down to the bottom. Then finally walking away in the first round of the haunt he found the collapsed room and fell to his death. Oh well!

Steve, Tom and Charlie played some Agricola ... and then they played it again! I have the scores of the first game but not the second. It was very tight, and compared to my experiences Tom scored particularly well for a first-time play.

After Guillotine Brian went to join the new Betrayal game hooking up, while I joined the group for some classic Ticket to Ride. Paula and Laura hadn't played before, but had played the card game. I hadn't played the card game so I wasn't sure how similar it was so I started teaching from the beginning.

I was wounded two rounds into the game as Matt took both lines out of Las Vegas with his initial hand, completely invalidating one of my tickets. Yikes! I also whiffed on another small one when I couldn't reach Montreal in time.

Laura struggled a little with visualizing her routes and also ended up with a few unfinished tickets.

Paula: 123
Mark: 108
Matt: 105
Laura: 57

Betrayal came out again, this time with Eric, Chrissie, Chris, Peg, Rich and Brian. In fact, it came out twice!

The first scenario seemed a bit unlucky and unbalanced as the heroes wiped out Chrissie the Traitor in record time. Unfulfilled they went at it again!

The second scenario seemed a bit odd and apparently involved dancing. Chris and Brian were both the traitors, but the Heroes won again!

The final game of the night was Bang! I had played once a long time ago, but we had played the game wrong; thinking that anyone in jail could not get out at all until they drew a heart. As a result of that error I rated the game very low and was reluctant to play again. But once I learned that was wrong I was willing to give it another shot.

Rich was the sheriff and I was his deputy. But since most everyone refrained from going after Rich it was hard to clue him in on my role. Eric seemed to pick on me a lot early so it was easy to focus on taking him out. Didn't work, however.

In the end it was down to Rich vs. Chrissie and Peg ... and the Lady Outlaws were victorious!

After this second play my opinion has changed some. "Take that" games still aren't "my cup of tea", but I found it a bit more fun than the first play. I find it comparable to Family Business, which if I'm going to play a "take that" game I'd much rather play than something like Munchkin.

Still ... I kind of wish the deduction element of figuring out people's roles had a little more something to it than "shoot 'em all and let God sort it out ..." but it's definitely something I'd sit on again.
