Last night the United State of America, a nation which practiced slavery at its inception and even codified the notion that slaves were equal to "three fifths' of a person in its Constitution, elected its first African American President. Whether you voted for or against Barrack Obama, only the most ungracious would refuse to admit that history was made. I, for one, am proud of my country and hope that our 44th President is up to the difficult challenges that lay ahead. It is time to unite, not divide. Time to stand together, not apart. Time to move forward and not be shackled by the past.

To celebrate the experience, I played 1960: The Making of the President while watching elections returns. What did you play? Or were you too caught up in the moment? Or too disappointed in the outcome?

Please add to this list any games you were playing while history was being made last night. And why THAT game? Thanks.

This is one of the best, if not the best, election games out there. I thoroughly enjoy it and it only seemed natural to play during the election results.

I was playing Go on KGS. Of course it's what I do most evenings when I have a spare hour or so.

I stopped and gave my attention to the candidates when they spoke.

I found voting this year to be a pleasure, similar to playing Go. I found myself admiring two good moves/candidates and looking deeper into the situation locally and globally to determine which would serve my game best.

Just got the game last week, and we've been on a bit of a high lately. Played our first game of five, and really feel like the game works well with different numbers of players and you still have to approach it differently.

We played this not out of any great significance. We got it at GenCon and haven't had a chance to play just the two of us since then.
There was controversy and at the end I demanded a recount. My wife missed out on the rule that when playing with just two you can only use one of the double routes. Late in the game after I had already made a huge loop around because of this she charged up the middle. We also forgot to pull out the extra train cars. We decided to call it a draw.

I went to an election-night party. I warned the guests up front that I was coming armed with games. I also brought TtR-Nordic, Paris Paris, 10 Days in the USA, and 1960: The Making of the President, but my read of the crowd (one other grownup, three teenage girls, and me) was that Flea Circus was the way to start. We played about a half-dozen times, with no one winning more than twice. I only won once, but had the high score for the evening, 19. (All games were with 5 players.) No one had ever heard of the game--or any of my games--before, but this one went over very well. Several of the girls were quite adept at arranging their audience; one not only balanced her cats on her dogs, but vice versa, as well--quite the talented thirteen year old.

After the rest of the crowd showed up, I brought out Pandemic. Since I was the only person who had ever played before (or even heard of it), we played the Easy version--only four Epidemics. Just the same, the board quickly looked like the picture over there, even though we had the Medic. Interestingly, we didn't lose because of Outbreaks or not having enough cubes of a color to put on the map; one turn before curing the final disease, we had only one card left to be drawn--we lost by a single card. No one was disheartened by this, though--everyone resolved that we'll play again and beat the game, [palin] gosh darn it. [/palin] In fact, it looks like I've just discovered a new group of friends to game with--and we were all quite happy with the election results, as well. Talk about your win-win.

I'd not played Merchants of Venus and I was interested in the game as a precursor to Duck Dealer. We played 3 players to $2,000 (two newbies). I won by a mere $4 over the experienced player. It was a nice enough game, nothing to write home about but pleasant.

I've managed to stay clear of the election hubbub and the results. I've managed to live in an election-coverage-free world for some months now (no TV and no periodicals) so I don't know who won or lost or whether it is hung up in another counting dispute. I'm sure someone will insist on my knowing at some point. I'm not clear on how knowing will change my life in any useful fashion.

I hope my copy of Duck Dealer arrives in the mail today. I'd like to play it tonight.

The game didn't get finished, but that's not unusual.

After putting the kids to bed, my wife and I and cracked a bottle of Merlot, set up Lost Cities and turned on NPR.

We never finished the game, because after Ohio went Blue we started getting phone calls from friends.

Once the election was called for (now) President-elect Obama, we went outside to shout our joy to the world - but we found out we weren't the only ones! Cheers, shouts of elation, music, car horns and fireworks echoed from everywhere around us.

It was amazing.
