After not seeing Kirk for around four years we estimated, he decided to hold a weekend long game-a-thon. I was there Friday and Saturday morning, and got to meet some of his friends, though of course some of their names escape me fortunately I think he gave a list, thankfully someone has informed of of all the names and games played, I'll add the names, hopefully they'll add the games!

Friday

Kirk his neighbor (Corey) and I to start.

We then added Dave & Stephanie and the last one in for the night was Mike!

*edits*

Saturday

Wayne, Kirk, Dave, Steph
Then we added Scott, Paul and Sam

I departed at this point having a great time, leaving the others playing game up until the wee hours I imagine.

Sunday

Mike returned, Matthew, and Amelia also joined the fray, later in the day.

If I missed anything feel free to comment!

Kirk's neighbor was new to Euro Board Games after being an avid Avalon Hill gamers was curious of this new style of game so had lots of questions. Of course when we tried to decide upon a quick game we opted for a co-op game instead to start. Even the introductory game we lost just because we got hit so badly at the beginning with outbreaks.

Stephanie and Dave arrived and this was my first time playing this game finally, very interesting, we played the family version which played rather fine. My first observations are the level of planning is fairly intense,

I made some early mistakes that allowed me to score big on one side but be penalized very badly on the other side. Nonetheless a fun game, do I want it, the word is still out.

This was a nice game 45-60 minutes of hosing each other after all the fun and friendly stuff that happened in the earlier part of the evening. I seem to feel it suffers a bit from you really need to know where you're coming from in order to have a chance, there can be a lot of left out feelins which may make you make too good of deal with others. Nonetheless an interesting game.

The neighbor had to leave at about midnight, so we played good ol Puerto Rico, but instead opted to use some of the expansions. Game dynamics change significantly different strategies were formed, which really brought a lot more life to this game, but at times augmented it so someone real familiar really had to put on a new set of glasses to figure the best strategy.

Saturday started at around 9:00 AM while waiting for Paul who I had played with just over a year ago, Kirk brought in this game. Another Go like strategy game with analysis paralysis mixed in. Very interesting pretty pieces.

Finally Paul had arrived along with another two, though I had to leave soon as others arrived but we opted a game that we all got to play together rather than break up.

It was a wonderful game where the Traitor, did the dreaded quiet job on us, most of us suspected him but no one wanted to point the finger. I think one good strategy nonetheless is talk about who the traitor is when you have vocal folks and than encourage the other to do the right things, if they do them, you may not have a trair, but who knows for sure!

After Wayne left, KirkCon 2008 continued.

This was the first time playing Notre Dame for three of us. I like the mechanics quite a bit. Scott and myself were completely screwed by rats!

This is a second attempt for me to play Railroad Tycoon and a third for the group. All attempts, including this one, have involved at least one major mis-reading of the rules.

This time, we did not place enough goods on the new cities, causing the game to deteriorate as we moved into the West. One by one, we lost the ability to gain victory points. It was painful.

Next time, I think we'll get it right.

This is my second time playing Indonesia. It's a brutal game requiring great concentration. My first game a while back, I played poorly had no hope of winning about a quarter of the way into the game.

This time, I kept myself viable until the very end, though I was still trounced by the players who took longer to more thoroughly plan their moves.

The last game of Saturday, and my only win of the weekend! The victory was especially sweet as I killed off both of my remaining opponents in a single move by correctly guessing the number of 3s under the cups.

Edit: It was also sweet because my Liar's Dice end-game usually sucks.

Saturday began with Kirk teaching us how to play this. Though easy enough to learn, I found it quite challenging to formulate a strategy until nearing the end.

I will give the developer of this game credit in one particular area: On no less than three occasions, I thought I had completely ruined my chances by making bad moves. Each time, though, I found that there was an alternate action which could either equal or best the plans I thought I had ruined.

Simply having the most "works" seems like a pretty good tactic.

Matthew took a break from the Through the Ages game in the other room to teach four of us how to play El Grande.

We were surprised how easy it was to learn. The "deep thinking" portion of the game occurred almost immediately as we started to contemplate the seemingly infinite combination of possibilities presented by the special action cards.

I really enjoyed this game a lot and will definitely play it again.
