Great Lakes Games is an annual open boardgaming convention held in the upper midwest. As one of the organizers, I've been privileged to meet many new friends, as our membership has largely grown through word of mouth.

We're a family-friendly convention, and it's neat to see how the kids have grown over the past six years.

This year Great Lakes Games was held just north of Fort Wayne, Indiana. We had 95 people registered for the convention. Gaming started about 1 PM on Thursday and ended at about 3PM on Sunday.

One cool thing about our weekend is that we're always two weeks after Essen, and since a couple of our attendees are regulars at Essen, we always have the newest Essen games to play. Many times the first time these games are played in the States is at Great Lakes Games.

Feel free to add games you played if you were with us this past weekend.

Feel free to contact me if you're interested in more information about Great Lakes Games. If there's room next year, maybe you can join us!

I started my gaming Thursday afternoon playing this nasty game with Earl Bailey and Michelle Corbin, who flew up from North Carolina for the weekend. It was great fun playing with them again, we only get a chance to see them a couple of times per year. Michelle won our game.

Auf Achse is one of my top ten games of all time. I played this with Earl and Michelle and two of my kids on Thursday afternoon. Allison, my 12 year old won.

I played it again later during the convention with five teenagers and squeaked out a win by less than 500 Euro.

Wow, was this a blast! Some people said they didn't care for this game, but I really enjoyed it. You are just about guaranteed to wreck your sled at least once, and you can really get hosed by a bad set of cards, but I had a great time playing this one. I was joined by Jeph Stahl (who every year designs and self-publishes a game for everyone who registers for GLG), Rob Wood, Greg Daigle, and Brett Myers. Greg and I finished equally far over the finish line.

This was the next game I played, another brand new racing game from Essen. I loved the movement mechanism, but had a terrible time reaching the proper "line" to be able to move quickly through the race course. Call it the curse of bad die rolls. I played with Todd Lang, Ian Mackey, Bruce Miller, Larry Rice, and Paul Abrahmse. Larry won.

I like Snow Tails better.

Chinatown is one of Earl Bailey's favorite games, and someone had taken the Alea version along, so we were able to play this edition. I was joined by Greg Daigle, Jeph, Earl, and Michelle. Everyone had great fun, even, Earl who finished in last place.

I played two games of this with Michael Green, Cindy Wood, and my wife, Theresa. Michael won the first and Theresa won the second. This game was being played almost constantly. There were five copies on the prize table, and they were all chosen very early.

I am not sure how I feel about the game. I enjoy the mechanism, it flows very smoothly. However, there's very little direct interaction between the players. I believe this will change as you mix up the cards, we played with a very basic mix of cards. My kids all played it and loved it, so there's no doubt it will end up in the collection at some point.

This is a neat old racing game where you have a rack of "wind stones" that show which direction a dragon will fly when placed next to a dragon. You can put stones in front of your own or someone else's dragon, to either move yourself toward the goal or move your opponent away. The stones are held on slanted racks, and you have to play the lowest three stones in order on your turn. When you play the stone, you move the dragon from the stone he's standing on (which you can't see) onto the one you played. You then put the one you moved the dragon from into the high side of your rack, so you'll get that stone on your next turn. There are a few cards in the game to veto getting moved by an opponent and to have a gust of wind that gives you five moves on your turn, but otherwise that's about it. A 20-30 minute race that you can teach in 5 minutes and works great with a mixed group of kids and adults.

I played with Michael Green, my daughter Allison, and her friend Gabrielle. Michael won.

Ted Cheatham asked a group of people to playtest a prototype. I played with Steve Jones, Ian, and Michael. We were asked to learn the game from the written rules, a way for the designer to check whether he had the rules clearly expressed or not.

The game has some interesting things going on, but it was frustrating for some in our group.

This is a cooperative game about being trapped on a submarine and trying to keep the ship from being destroyed from a variety of accidents in a limited amount of time. I had fun playing this, but that was as much because I played with Craig Berg, Chris Lohroff, Ted Cheatham, and Ian Mackey as it had to do with the game. I am not a big fan of cooperative games, but this one was OK.

First time I had the chance to play this. Ian and Chris taught Craig and I, who also had never played. Michael Green joined us. I was pretty confused by what to do when, and ended up in last place (Craig won). I'm looking forward to playing it again (besides, my 12 year old daughter played it a couple of times this weekend and told me she can't wait to teach her mom how to play).

I like games where you have to find things, like Kaleidos. This one was pretty good, but not quite as good as I had hoped. I lost to a 10 year old, which is probably the way things should have gone. If there wasn't a new edition of Kaleidos out, I'd probably pick this one up.

Pig racing! Acrobatic circus pigs! We played twice...actually three times, because in our second game the pink pig ran the entire course in two turns and lapped the rest of us, so we kept going for a third race. This game is always good for a lot of laughs, especially when played for fun.

A fun, loud game that's simple to teach and very nasty. We played with 7 people, Ted used three pigs from Russelbande because the game only goes to 6 players. We were plagued by an ultra-fast Torro. The first time he charged (and we could score points) was two spaces away from the arena. No wonder several of us ended with negative points. Still, it's always a blast interrupting everyone in the convention with a loud "Ole!" when you turn over the Torro card.

Thingamajig is a late-night staple for me at gaming conventions. Clues that barely make sense are extra fun when you're sleep deprived. We don't really keep score, just throw chips around, toss a few back every now and then to refill the pot, and keep going just to have fun. I played until 12:30 on Saturday night, and then I had to go to bed, I was exhausted.

The first game of the extended weekend I believe! Dale Yu, Valerie Putman, Michael Webb, myself and err, someone else, Larry or Josh I believe. blush It all gets to be a bit of a blur.

I have to say, getting to play with Dale Yu's broken belt buckle (which was used for the coupler he had not had a chance to glue together) was quite amusing.

One of my little traditions after a game event is to do my list of "games I lost." I could easily have done that this weekend, but here was the shock of the entire GLGs.

It was an epic duel of keeping our rookeries capitalized but in the end I prevailed!

I WON Pampas Railroads! I was ready to pack it in and go home. But there were more games to play
