This is the only one I could think of so far. I like exploring the unknown. I like the idea of space pirates. I like mining and establishing colonies.

Kinda want the feel of wing commander on my table!

This probably isn't at all what you're looking for, but it does fit in a sense, so I thought it was worth mentioning.

There is a very clever space exploration cooperative game in Sid Sackson's Beyond Competition (a page open to that game is pictured here.) It involves piloting your craft so as to intercept the orbits of the various solar system planets in succession, subject to the luck of the card draw and certain rules about turning.

If you're looking for a lavishly illustrated gameboard, this isn't for you, but it's a clever little game.

More of a space-themed trading game, the first part is exploration and finding "cultures." Unfortunately, this is REALLY old and probably hard to find.

This is a very long game that almost mandates having a referee (there are those that play unrefed but its generally discouraged). You start with:
* Your home system

Usually there's ten systems roughly to a player. How those are laid out, where they are, and how to get to them is all randomly determined after play starts. Enjoy.

Here is a two-player or solo game where you explore randomly chosen planets. One player is the Federation the other the Klingons. It is a paragraph based game where you read an entry and choose an option, but it will take you many plays to exhaust all the scenarios. The game is from 1985, but you can still buy it new at Intergalactic Trading Company for $20. I haven't played this game since 1985-86. I'm trying to talk my wife into trying it with me.

This has to be my favorite game for what you are looking for. You get some smaller mapsheets of the gamemap and you have to plot out your "Starfall" points on them, once you've discovered them. These take you on a "hyper-jump" across the gamemap and you never know where you'll end up the first time you go through them until after you've "jumped". On the back of the mini-maps are places to record any worthwhile "finds" as you journey throughout the Universe. That is WHY you have those mini-gamemap sheets to mark these on because in every game, they'll be different. You also have to discover Planets or Stars and Colonize them while "Terra Forming" to your delight and there might even be intelligent lifeforms on them! while some could be even MORE advanced than yourself. Just watch out for them "Superior Intellect Robotic 'Lifeforms'?" or you could become "assimilated" by them. You can also Combat with other players if you'd like and conquer their well developed systems.

Star Conquest is a game of resource management that emphasizes three aspects: the extraction of minerals (mining) and its management, policy/diplomacy (Consuls), and militarization (Fleet of Ships). Players compete each other, economically, politically and militarily, in a grid game that represents the Alpha Centauri System.

Players build their own ships, increasingly powerful using combinations of different minerals (Neutronium, Duranium, Molybdenum and Tritanium) that are obtained in the different sectors System.

Each player starts the game on their home planet with a fleet Ships and mineral reserves. To prosper you must know properly optimize their ships, their consuls and Minerals Colonies obtained. For your empire grows you will need spread out (space exploration), for it must build more and better ships to control neighboring sectors in the system. Of course, the other players try to do the same, so you must provide at all times attention to their movements.
