Tomorrow is Veteran's Day in the United States; a time to honor those that served our country in protecting our and other people's freedoms.

Paraphrased from the US Army's site (http://www.history.army.mil/faq/vetsday/vetshist.htm):

On November 11, 1919: President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…" The original concept for the celebration was for the suspension of business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M., with the day also marked by parades and public meetings.

In 1921: Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony. According on October 20, Congress declares November 11, 1921 a legal Federal holiday to honor all those who participated in the war. The ceremony was conducted with great success.

1938: Congress passes legislation on May 13 making November 11 a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day. The United States has no ‘actual’ national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own holidays. The Federal government can in fact only designate holidays for Federal employees and for the District of Columbia. But in practice the states almost always follow the Federal lead in designation of holidays.

World War II and the Korean Conflict added a substantial number of veterans to the rolls.

1968: Congress passes the Monday Holiday Law which established the fourth Monday in October as the new date for the observance of Veteran’s Day. The law is to take effect in 1971.

1975: Legislation passed to return the Federal observance of Veteran’s Day to November 11, based on popular support throughout the nation. Since the change to the fourth Monday in October, 46 states had either continued to commemorate November 11 or had reverted back to the original date based on popular sentiment. The law was to take effect in 1978.

A few of us thought one way to remember our veterans was to re-enact some of the historic conflicts with some war games. While none of these are "perfect" reflections of the horrors of war and of the sacrifices made, it is one way to at least bring it to the forefront of our minds and then each person can remember the sacrifice as they see fit.

The following list will begin with ones we will be playing - we have 3 (maybe 4) of us, so we are limited to those that support 3-4 players. We will in no way get a chance to play all of these. Some are "serious" wargames, some less serious (i.e. simplistic).

Please feel free to post any additional games you consider worthy and explain how they may be attached to the remembrance of our veterans.

For those of you outside the US, also feel free to add games that honor your vets and if your have a similar holiday let us know when it is.

This one is almost assuredly going to get played; it is the Armistice, followed by the Treaty of Versailles that ended the "War to End All Wars".

I finally got some minis, so we'll probably set-up a scenario where I'll have two allies pick on an axis power. Since this is my favorite aerial combat game, this will also probably get played.

There is a chance I'll drag this one out in remembrance of the sacrifices to end conflicts brought on by the various fascist Governments that came to power.

While no US aircraft are involved in this game; it was these bomber raids that started the slow downfall of Nazi Germany by destroying their war production.

I know this isn't serious, but the two serious games (Supremacy and Nuclear Armageddon) I have that are associated with the conflicts we have so far avoided would take too long and I think we'll be mentally drained a bit.

A bit hokey but the idea might still be worthy? Maybe one day the world will stop producing veterans. Unfortunately, I'm one but was proud to serve and would do it all over again.

I don't own this game but it does seem to be appropriate for tomorrow - Remembrance Day.

Will be heading down to the Ceremonies at the local Cenotaph tomorrow morning to do my part. My 7 yr old daughter will be taking part in the parade for the first time as a member of Girl Guides (Brownies).

In Italy, November 4th is the National Unity and Armed Forces Day (Giornata dell'Unità Nazionale e delle Forze Armate), a celebration of the end of World War I and of unification of Italy (the latter defying a definitive date, really: the end of Risorgimento is usually dated in 1870, but parts of Italy were annexed only after WWI). It is customary for state representatives to show at ceremonies in key Italian sites of the World War I, such as Vittorio Veneto, theater of the last major battle sustained by Italian forces during WWI, also portrayed in this game. The celebration itself, while one of the oldest national festivities, having stayed since its inception through liberal, fascist and modern republican Italy, waxed and waned in popularity through the years, and only recently has increased in importance due to the initiatives of President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi (1999-2006).
