Bob, Ben, our friend Aubrey and I arrived at Euruquest about
8:15 on Friday night to find our beloved Days Hotel in total shambles. A total renovation project was underway. The front entry way and drive were completely closed. What was left of the lobby was a 3'x5' whole cut in the drywall to see through to the office. The inside entrance to Chili's was closed, and all travel into and out of the hotel was from the back parking lot.

On the upside, the "ballroom" was completely finished with fine new wallpaper and carpet.

So we checked in and went to our room on the 5th floor. Wow. The new rooms are beautiful. Dark blue walls, dark wood furniture, headboards, and blue and white bedding. We had a fridge and a microwave.

We were quite surprised to see that all the artwork on the walls looked similar to this:

photo: Dogbert 10

Apparently, the Days is jumping ship and becoming a Holiday Inn. Explains the nice rooms.

Thanks to Blott and his Trick of the Geek, I was able to post the above picture.

On to some gaming! We started out the con with a game to include Ben (age 10). He loves the cooperative game Pandemic. I guess it doesn't sting as much when we all lose, which we did spectacularly. The game lasted about 15 minutes before the outbreaks destroyed us.

Players: Bob Jones (Ipecac)
Ben Jones
Aubrey Bell
Carol Jones (Fairer Sex)

Next we gave Bob's most recent incarnation of his current prototype a try. He added a space theme and pasted up some pretty tiles and cards. Carol, Bob and Aubrey all were in range of finishing our boards, but I finished first which gave me the edge in claiming victory. This prototype is a winner.

Next we split our little group up, and Aubrey and I joined Keith Levy and Tom Dunning for this wildcard game. This was a tough game, as camels were extremely scarce, but Keith and I still managed to get several cubes into the caravan, scoring big from it. Tom practically filled the playing board on the last turn giving him a score that was barely beatable with the caravan. A very enjoyable game. Thanks for inviting us, Keith.

Next, Dave Fair taught Bob, Aubrey, Dave Kudzma and me the new Essen release, Snow Tails. This is a dog racing game in the arctic. The artwork was very white and the production value good. I'm not a big race game fan, and this didn't blow me away either. It was like a combination of Formula De and Bolide. However, it was much easier and faster than Bolide making it a decent filler game, especially with the addition of the forest.

I was the first into the forest, but had to adjust my speed while there, and sat for a couple of turns, while Dave Fair (and others) passed me and went on for the win.

Dave F 1st place (BeyondMonopoly)
Dave K 2nd place (locusshifter)

So by this time, it was around midnight. Ben was itching to play werewolf, but they didn't have enough players to start. So a few of us non-werewolf fans decided to play a round to get it going. So to make a long story short, Scott Fisher (SCFishman) was the seer and was killed first by the werewolves. A long line of people were then nominated but no seconds were forthcoming after much pointless discussion. (See how much I LOVE werewolf?). Then, Ben decides it would be funny to nominate his Mom as the werewolf. I didn't put up much defense and was voted out. I watched for a while, but couldn't take it anymore, and headed to the other side of the room to see what was going on.

By now, the 1st game of Werewolf is long over, and they have spent an hour and 20 minutes on the first round of the second game and STILL haven't voted off anyone. Since we have to wait for Ben and Aubrey we decide to take on a challenge: Finish a game of Agricola before they finish Werewolf.

Bob, Joe Ward and I start a three player game of Agricola. Joe has only played once, but picks up really quickly and requires very little explanation. Of course, as soon as we start, Ben becomes the 1st one voted out of Werewolf and is ready for bed (It's about 4:00 am by now). So Bob takes him upstairs and then we continue Agricola while waiting for Aubrey.

The Werewolf crew won the bet by about 20 minutes.

Final Scores: Bob 46
Joe 35
Me 32

It is now 5:30 am and we have successfully closed down the game hall. Off to bed. With Ben having stayed up late, we plan on a leisurely wake up around 11:00.

The next thing I hear is the sound of about 40 jackhammers. Ok, maybe it was only a couple, but still. It was loud. It was 8:30 am. I try to sleep. No good. So I finally drag myself up as everyone else sleeps soundly (even Aubrey who is in a sleeping bag on the floor!). I make it down to the game room, bleary eyed and dazed, about 9:30 am.

So I meet up with Dave and Kathy Kudzma and Kathy volunteers to teach us the new Z-Man game, Wasabi! And yes, you MUST say it with the exclamation point and with a cheesy Japanese accent.

This game is awesome. The bits are completely over the top. As Dave K pointed out, it's hard to even imagine this game with another theme. Now that's good work.

The premise of the game is that we are sushi chefs competing to make the best sushi the fastest. There is a community playing board, where everyone adds ingredients to make their sushi recipes while blocking the spots needed by their opponents. If you make your recipes "With Style" (all ingredients in the exact order) you get extra bonus points in the form of wasabi colored cubes added to your (real) wasabi bowl. This game was the hit of the convention for me.

Thanks, Kathy, for teaching it so well.

It's about noon and the other sleepyheads in our room are up, and it's time for the big event of the day. Dave Fair is going to teach Bob and I Le Havre.

Wow. Think the complexity of Twilight Imperium meets the goals of Agricola meets the game flow of Cuba. This game makes The Gric feel like a filler. We played for 3 1/2 hours. It's hard to imagine ever attempting this with its full 5 player complement.

What makes this game so complex, is you have action spaces, like in Agricola, but they are on movable cards and can be purchased by the players. Thus, they are scattered all over the table. Also, each card has different requirements spelled out in (small) picture form on the card, which require deciphering again and again (unless you have a really good memory--perhaps a few more hours of sleep would have made this easier).

We liked it. However, both Bob and I felt it was too long in the midgame. At the point where I thought it should be wrapping up, Dave informed us there were 8 more rounds to play. There is some variability in which cards are available in the game and what order they appear, so I am looking forward to another try to see if a different set up will change the feel of the game.

Thanks Dave, for teaching us another game that will most certainly be lasting in our library.

Next we go for some TTR and Eric picked the Europe version. The game was a little disjointed, due to Aubrey's mom arriving just after starting, and him having to leave. Then, the fire alarm went off (popcorn/microwave related emergency). Ben was alone in our room watching a movie, so I had to go fetch him (we'll be reviewing our fire safety lessons again). Once the firefighters left and the noise level dimmed, we had a good game. Didn't record the scores, but Eric won, I was 2nd and Laura 3rd.

Edit: Thanks to Eric Reinhold, I now have scores:

Eric: 121
Carol 115
Laura 100

It's funny how hearing another loud sustaining sound reminded me of how little sleep I got on Friday, and from this point on, I think I was in a daze.

Time for our next Tichu outing. This time it was Noreen and me paired against Zev and Jim Vroom.

I don't know if it was the lack of sleep talking or what, but I got brave and called a Grand Tichu in hand two. I made my 3rd ever Grand, and the 1st that I didn't call out of desperation.

Of course my joy was shortlived as Zev and Jim set us in round 3. There was a lot of back and forth tichus and setting, but Noreen and I managed to keep the upper hand. Going into the last round the score was 990 to 710. Jim called Tichu and we set him. Didn't record the final score, but it was victory for the ladies.

Dave Fair and Bob hadn't learned Wasabi! yet, so I taught it to them and Ben Fellowes. No scores, and since I don't remember correctly, I'll have to believe Dave won (see below).

For my last game of the con, I finally headed back into the realm of Dominion. I had really burned out on it during the playtesting period. This was the first foray into the finalized version.

The game is beautiful, the artwork thoughtful. However, 2 gripes with the final design. First, the typesetting on the cards is so small, it can't be read from your seat, considerably slowing down the game while people read and reread the cards on the table. Hopefully as the cards become more familiar, this will improve. Second, about halfway through the game, Noreen noticed that some of her card backs were a different color than the others in her deck. It turns out, these cards were meant to be the pile marking cards for each type of card. The only difference in these and the playing cards is a narrow color band around the edge that is tan in the playing cards and dark blue in the marking cards. We could barely tell the difference and none of us is colorblind. A plain card with the name on it would have been a much better solution.

We played the basic game setup and scores were

Noreen 39 Wow did she destroy us
