Hey there, everyone! Some of you may know me (especially my fellow Chitchatters), some of you may not. I've been here since the first quarter of this year and that is around the same time I discovered my new beloved hobby. The problem is, I haven't been around enough to see all the great games, especially when buying for other people.Recommend
Well, with the holidays coming in the near future, I thought it would be fun to have a "very boardgamey Christmas." What I'm going to do here is list of people my wife and I need to get presents for as well as their personalities/interests. Below I am going to add items that immediately leap to mind when thinking of them. What I would like to do is hopefully have you wonderful fellow geeks add items that come to mind when reading what I say about these people. This could well help me in my Christmastime purchases. Of course, if you're finding yourself in the same boat I am, feel free to add to the GeekList with people of your own you would like to find a game for!
*Also, when listing a game for someone, please refer to which person you think a game may be appropriate for.
So here are my people:
Katie--My wife's sister. 27. Her baby is getting to be close to a year old. She's a very fun, outgoing, opinionated woman. She's married to a sheriff's deputy. She has a weird obsession with Britney Spears, enjoys pop music. She's a good mother, a caring wife, and an all-around nice person. She's as much a firecracker as my wife is, and when they fight they REALLY fight. No matter how mad they get though, this entire family (Katie, Dodo (see below), and Tori (my wife)) circle the wagons as soon as someone attacks the family.
Spike--Katie's husband. 34. He is the sheriff's deputy. Very quiet, actually a lot like myself. Intelligent, dry wit, goofy when you get him to open up. He enjoys intentionally taking non-literal comments from the ladies literally as much as I do, just to see their reaction. He's a huge Nascar fan. Enjoys beer and playing the little video machines at the bar when he goes out. Extremely sarcastic. The men (Spike, Wayne (see below), and myself) throw glances at each other when when of the ladies gets on the back of another and know when it's time to leave the room for a beer or to talk shop.
Dodo, my wife's mom. 52. The matriarch. She works for the railroad about 18 miles south of where we all live. Believes what she believes and no one is going to change her mind. Ride's my wife's back a lot, but when the chips are down is always there. Enjoys martinis, Dancing with the Stars, and Brothers and Sisters. Extremely analytical as she is an accountant. Until my wife and I married, she was in charge of Tori's bank account. Tori and Katie like to say they would immediately follow their mother were she to pass as they couldn't exist without her.
Wayne, my wife's stepfather. 58. Again, a man like Spike and myself. Quiet, introverted. He drives a bus for the local schools, used to be on the town council, in charge of building permits for housing and whatnot. He loves fourwheeling and mowing their massive lawn on his riding mower. He and Dodo do crosswords every day. Can be extremely funny when the mood strikes him. Doesn't really talk unless he actually has something to say. Enjoys watching Boston Legal. Plays a lot of spider solitaire on the computer.
Now to MY side of the family.
Jen, my sister. 27 (this coming Monday, Nov. 17th). Like the rest of my family (except myself), she is extremely Catholic, but not as in she goes around judging. She simply has a pure, innocent, true belief in God. Married, has two children. Still has a bit of hero worship for her big brother, completely ignoring the fact that she's accomplished infinitely more in her life than I have. Loving wife, very funny, involved in her community. She has a home daycare just starting up, and sells Norwex products at parties (cleaning supplies that require nothing but water and are good for the environment). She definitely wears the pants in the family. Kindhearted soul who has always been a solid support whenever I have needed someone to be there.
Tim, Jen's husband. 29. He is an elementary school teacher. Goofy guy, someone I can kind of turn into a kid around. We have a tendency to punch each other a lot and get into shoving matches like we're ten years old. He's a baseball coach in the town they live in and is obsessed with anything Minnesota Twins-related. Likes to get their dog riled up. He enjoys playing sports games on their XBOX and going out for the ocassional drink.
Noah, Jen and Tim's oldest son. 3 (in the next month). Cute kid. I would like to make this his first boardgame year. Would really like to find something unique for him that he could play. Can't read yet. Extremely chatty, not very shy. Likes to play pac-man and go in the hot tub. He has a younger brother, Gabriel, who won't be getting a game as he's still too young and would probably eat it.
Don, my dad. 52. A geek like me. He is a 4th grade teacher at the local Catholic school. He reads fantasy novels, plays Guild Wars, and putzes on his computer. Can be somewhat judgemental, strict, but has a heart of gold. Has always been very much in charge of the family. Recently introduced to Settlers of Catan and loves playing it. Big RPG fan (video game, not p&p).
Bev, my mom. 52. She is the heart and soul of our family. Kind, loving, and gentle. She has an innocence about her that I've never seen in anyone before. I've even had several people tell me this. Loves her family, loves God, and enjoys life. She also enjoys Settlers, although she is more of a luck person (she REALLY loves farkle). She doesn't care what she is doing as long as it involves her family.
So that's the list, folks! I'm going to start off with a game that I think best exemplify's the personality and/or interests of each person. I know there isn't enough knowledge of what games they like for a real recommendation, but I'm not looking for games they'd like to play, per se. I thought it would be more fun to get them all games that personify who they are more. Feel free to add your own if you'd like!
