Not very long ago I wrote a series of 11 statistical explorations and a review for Reiner Knizia's Decathlon, a dice game that uses nothing but eight standard dice and a score sheet. The only other pure dice games I knew before were Yahtzee / Triple Yahtzee; Craps; and Poker Dice, although the latter may be cheating because it is supposed to be played with special dice. After writing the aforementioned series of articles, I did some further statistical explorations and - based on that - designed a pure dice game myself.

However, even though I don't like dice games (either pure or unpure), I'm still interested in what other pure dice games there are, because some of them are very interesting from a statistical / mathematical / probabilistic point of view. Searching for dice games on BGG isn't very useful though. There are way too many games that are marked 'dice' or 'dice rolling', and I wouldn't consider most of them dice games, not even in a very liberal sense.

Below is a list of the pure dice games I am aware of, and that I could find in the database. If you know of any games that should be on this list, please add them. However, only pure dice games should be added. So no games with novelty dice (just standard D6); no games with boards or other additional components (other than pen or pencil and paper or preferably freely available scoresheet); and no games that use dice in any other way then they were originally intended: for rolling.

The games are ranking by average rating, because some of them have too few ratings too be ranked.

I'm not sure about this one. Is this playable without a board and without money. Hence, is this a pure dice game as 'defined' above?

The implemenatation pictured includes game pieces, but aren't they really just a glorified scoring sheet?

A variation on this from Sid Sackson is also published as a paper-and-pencil game under the name The Great Races in the book, The Greatest Games of All Time (by Mathew J. Costello, 1991). A key difference is that here a player only rolls once per turn. Each number (2-12) represents a separate race, points are awarded for 1st and 2nd place finishers in each race.

Ship Captain And Crew:

uses 5d6.

Everyone playing antes in.

Each in turn gets three rolls. 1st roll is all 5 dice, other two are any subset.

To be elligible for the pot you need a ship (a 66 ), a captain (a 5 ) and some crew (Crew are ONLY 1234 ). Extra 5 and 6 rolls are read as 0 crew.

Once everyone has rolled, the pot is paid.

Most crew with a captain and ship takes the pot. If no one gets ship, captain and crew, play another round with additional ante. If tied for most crew, split the pot, leaving remainders in.

Variants:
1) crew can include 5's and 6's.
2) 6D instead of 5D

This might be the best pure dice game ever invented. It's a Sackson game which is essentially the same as Solitaire Dice, which he outlined in A Gamut of Games. It can be played competitively, but is essentially a solitaire exercise. But it's a great game and very addictive. Like so many Sackson designs, it's very simple, but mathematically sound and lots of fun.

Farkle is a push-your-luck dice game. I've only played a Palm OS version by Smart Box Design. http://www.smartboxdesign.com/farkle.html Players roll 6 dice on their turn. They have to pull at least one die out that has scored each roll. If they can't score a die then they've "Farkled" and their turn is over and they get no points.

Another of my creations, this is my attempt to design a two-player dice game with some player interaction. On your turn, you roll six dice, use three of them yourself, and give the other three to your opponent. So the way you split the dice depends upon her situation as well as your own. Once again, the rules and scoresheet are provided in the Geek entry.

Rules in English present it as "Catego"

From Reiner Knizia.

The number you roll is placed as a bid to claim a point value from 2 to 11. Others may win the value by placing a higher bid with one of their rolls

This is one of my games. You roll six dice, rerolling some of them once or twice, before scoring in one of ten categories. If, after filling out all ten categories, you've rolled fewer than 30 times, you can use your saved rolls to try to improve your scores. The rules are provided in the game's entry.

Kasta is an Old Norse word, meaning to throw away, discard or dispose of.

A dice game for 2 or 4 players.

You don't roll the dice in Kasta you discard them, this makes the game play similar to games like Rummy, Dominoes and Uno the exception being that in Kasta there is no hidden information.

I designed this dice game to have a bit of out-guessing in it, as I found most dice games to be too low in player interaction.

Do you go for the high points steal, even though it's obvious, or the lower points that is more likely to slip by your opponent?

Very old and very simple pure dice game.

Gambling game played with 2 dice. As a gambling game it usually involves money, which is an additional component, which would make it not a pure dice game, but it's perfectly playable for points rather than money.

My own attempt to create a pure dice game. My main design goal was to create a slightly more strategic and slightly more interactive pure dice game, since most games in the genre that I'm aware of are almost 100% luck and have no interaction whatsoever.

Played with 5 dice.
