With the birth of my son, I have begun to wax nostalgic about the good times that my Dad and I have shared. I am lucky; I have a great Dad, and one of the memories that I treasure is playing games with him. To be sure, we played a ton of sports as well, but the games for some reason retain more sentimental value.

Below is a list of games I love playing with my Dad; hopefully my son will someday want to play some with me!

Feel free to add your own family game memories....

When I was a young child, we lived overseas. Since my parents didn't speak much of the language, they spent numerous nights indoors. There is a picture of me on my first birthday rolling the dice out of the dice cup while I sit on my dad's lap.

No word on whether or not it was a Yahtzee...

Since my Dad didn't want to be bored while playing with me, he introduced me to chess. He clobbered me for six straight years, but since that elusive first victory of mine, I am not sure we have played since!

What can I say, I was a sucker for theme! Sitting through this roll-and-movefest now is killer, but at the time there was nothing that compared to the high adventure packed into this box. Unless it was The Squirrel Game...

We had the old version with the wooden blocks. I remember a 4-player match where I pounded my dad down to one measly army in Southern Europe, but I thought it seemed like the noble thing to let him live. The next turn, my dad turned in a card set for roughly 1,000,000 armies and ran roughshod over my empire.

Lesson learned.

Since my dad knew I liked to play games, he pulled out this one when I was beginning grad school. He apparently loved playing it in high school, but this luckfest makes Monopoly look like Caylus.

I'll still play it anytime he asks...

Being the great brother that I am, I picked up this title for my little brother's 19th birthday. The real fun, however, was watching my dad fish into the draw pile for five straight turns looking for one blue train.....

We churned this one out over my last vacation. He liked it quite a bit; I think he is an economic gamer in the making! Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

My dad has been playing Rook since the 1940's. He was an incessant player of Rook, Cribbage, Gin, Canasta, and Bridge from his childhood through college. He used to spend a lot of time playing cards down at the neighborhood firehouse with the firemen (he explained that there weren't so many fires in those days).

Until he married my mother, who was doing the classic "non-gamer wife" routine decades before it became fashionable. She refused to play cards with him or their friends. Immovable object.

He taught Rook to his 2nd and 3rd kids (my sister and me) in the mid 1960's. I remember sitting a a table my grandfather built, playing partners when I was only in the second or third grade.

I just recently gave him a commemorative centennial set I got in 2006 (Rook was created in 1906). We plan to play next week, after he gets over a nasty cold. I'm looking forward to it.

My dad didn't play many games. But I remember dad and me and the other kids playing a LOT of canasta one summer, after he taught us. It was a blast.

Then my folks divorced and he moved away...

My dad wasn't a big game player, but he picked up this copy of Rod Hockey on a business trip to Canada when I was young and we did play that some.

Eventually one of the springs popped and we were never able to fix it adequately for it to work well any more.

I had another mostly non-gamer dad. We did play quite a bit of Cribbage, and he dabbled in Risk, but the game we played together that I have the fondest memories of is Carrier Strike!

We enjoyed watching anything about WWI & WWII, especially if it involved airplanes. I remember seeing 'The Blue Max' and 'Midway' at a drive-in movie theater. In the days before cable was available to us out in the sticks, we watched 'Black Sheep Squadron' on NBC (I think), and 'G.I. Diary' on PBS.

Anyway, it was probably '78 or '79 that I got this for Christmas, and I remember we played several games just that day. I can't remember what happened to my original set, but in the last few years, I've tried to get another copy. Many eBay bids fell short, and a couple of BGG trades fell through, but I'm happy to report I finally have a mint copy on the way, for less than $30.00 shipped!

Hopefully dad and I can have another game next time he comes down to visit!
