I can't wait to receive at my doorstep (actually at my P.O. Box) Fields of Fire.
As you can see from my geekbadges I pimp this game. And if you followed a few months back the GMT P500 geeklists, you will see my pimping of this game.

But why? What makes FoF so special for me? I'll try to resume it as best as I can.

Preorder

FoF was the first game I ever preordered. Actually I preorder this game so long ago (three to four years) that I don't know exactly when I did it.

BTW, I think I'll now pimp this game.

Playtesting

Also, it was the first game I playtested. It wasn't for a long time, and I wasn't of much help, but it got me really excited on the game.

I had just got involved in the playtesting when my fiancee broke the relationship. Hard times. I stopped playtesting, but at least I had the rules to read them and to evade from a bad time.

I had already some good GMT games, but since I preordered FoF my collection has been steadily growing, specially GMT. They make excellent games, both in playability and in component quality.

And their human quality, specially after this year special offer for those that have lost their jobs. Incredible!

No offense intended but I don't think Uwe Rosenberg really worked as a middle-ages farmer!

WWII

I am a history buff, but of all ages I am most interested in the WWII period. From a political-historical point of view (from 1914 to 1960) and from a military point of view.

I have managed to solo the barbarrossa campaign for this game.

One of the best thing about FoF (in my book) is that in the base box you'll get 3 campaigns. WWII, Korea and Vietnam. I have not got any game on Korea or Vietnam, and the designer says that they all play completely different!!! You even get helicopters!!

Squad level

FoF puts you in the position of a company commander (not sure of the true military denomination). You have to plan your action, but... no plan resists contact with the enemy, so you'll have to react.

Complexity

This game is simple. Well, grognardly simple. It is pretty straight forward as you will repeat the rules over each mission, so you'll probably have them down on two or three missions. (I hope)

FoF was really innovative in it's use of cards and command when I first started playtesting it. Now CC:E has some similar features (they have nothing to do with each other, but the use of card has some similarities).

This game may well (if it turns out as I expect) develop on a whole system with dozens of possibilities.

I will expose hereunder the ones that I see (or I have read of) as more feasable and I would like you to post anyother possibility that you may think of or would like to see.

I have seen the series through three times and I love it. I have been waiting for a game that puts me on Major Winters view... This is the game that I've been looking for.

BTW, the attack on Brecourt Manor (chapter 3 I think) is a perfect example of how the games play out. (My personal opinion).

The soon-to-be-at-my-doorstep module can be expanded with four campaigns:

WWII Brest: Just adding a few terrain cards and missions briefings. (C3i anyone?)

WWII Bulge: Add more terrain cards, more counters (panzers in the midst) and more missions. (Ziplock package? small box?)

Korea Chinese intervention: More missions and counters (chinese). (C3i? ziplock?)

Vietnam higlands: More terrain cards and missions. (C3i? Ziplock?)

(I never thought this game could exist)

The second big box game foreseen in this series is with the 5th US Marine in three wars:

- Pacific WWII (this is for me like dougnought for Homer Simpson)
- Vietnam or Korea (I don't know)
- Irak (Maybe?)

The system is really good for design your own scenarios, actually, I think that (if you are really committed to it) a player can create a whole campaign with a whole different military unit, even from a different country.

Decissions

I like solitaire games, but some of them (B-29 and Silent War I am looking at you) have little decissions. They tell a story, but sometimes you just feel like you are just reading it. In FoF this is not so. You decide what to do.

Wish list

This is just a list of units/campaigns/timeframes I would like to see added to the system.

- WWI. There has been some talk on this on consimworld, and I think that even Ted Raicer (designer of Paths of Glory) has tried the game, so it could be studied.
- German units. WWII from the side of the losers. The russian front, the dessert, Italy, defending Germany.... millions of possibilities!!
- Russians. The difference in battle tactics between Russians (actually USSR, you know what I mean) and "occidentals" is so great that this can be interesting.
- Legión Española. Moroccan war (the first modern disembark in Alhucemas, the "Desastre de Annual", the war against Abd el-Krim). The Spanish Civil War... (Ok, maybe I am the only one interested in this)

What are your ideas

Variants

This is just an idea, but I would like to have a way of awarding medals. Maybe, if a mission was accomplished the commander (me) could award a medal to a unit of his choice, noting it in some way.

Maybe I will keep an excel spreadsheet with all the squads, giving them purple hearts for casualties and other medals for achievements (hand grenade silencing a machinegun nest, etc.)

Do you have any ideas for variants
