One of my dearest friends turned 40 today... in "another" city. And he decided to have a game day for a birthday celebration, so naturally I offered to bring some games along when I flew down.

For a two night stay the obvious packing is a change of underwear, a toothbrush, and GAMES. This list is what I put into carry on luggage with a view to a game party. (If I hadn't brought the laptop along I could have packed quite a few more games in a laptop bag. But really I knew I already had much more than we would be able to play.)

Of my game collection, this is the one my friend had (a) seen before (b) didn't already own and (c) was hankering to play on the day. The box is big enough to pack six foam "handguns"... full size square and fairly thick. But there was enough space in the box for something else. Hmmm.

Anyway, when the first few friends turned up we had a couple of rounds of this with four then six players, and of course it was a blast. (See! I managed to resist saying "it went off with a ...")

This was an obvious choice. Works well for seven players, and has a party-friendly air of silliness and raucousness in tune with the day. Not to mention my friend is a Roborally player of many years, and Fearsome Floors has a sort-of similar air of chaotic manouvering and trying to set up "gotcha" situations. As a bonus, while the box is nominally full standard "game size" it's quite flat.

This was one of the games we set up even before anyone arrived. Much to my disappointment there were more than seven wanting to play, so I explained the game to seven players and then went off with two remaining players for something else...

Here's another game that works well with six players, and of course there were going to be lots of nerdy comp sci professionals and mathematicians on the day so a game of the travelling salesman problem was likely to have some appeal.

This is what I was playing while the seven were playing Fearsome Floors. It was ok, but today I'd have rather had the silliness of Fearsome Floors than the furrowed brow of Elfenland, and basically introducing two new players for a three player game made it not much of a challenge. Oh well.

Since I decided to pack this, I took the Fearsome Floors board rules and pieces and hid them in Elfenland's box.

Another thigh-slapping appeal-to-the-heavens chaos fest. With an expected room full of former players of Nuclear War this is a step sideways from there that's likely to be enjoyed by many. And being just a few decks of cards and some dice I could have almost carried it in my pockets. But actually I brought the whole box.

It didn't get played though. (Meh. We can't play everything in one day.)

I wasn't sure about bringing this. But it's small, I'd like to play it some more, and it seems unlikely to get much play at home. So I popped it in the bag. (I took the bits and put them in the Ca$h 'n Gun$ box.)

Especially, there might have been a chance to play it before or after the party with my friend and his wife. But the chance didn't really come up.

I was delighted when friends of mine managed to scrounge a (new) copy of this for my own birthday last year. Its a lot of fun if you're in the mood for it, so in spite of the fairly bulky box I shoved it in along side Ca$h 'n Gun$

Alas, didn't get played.

I've owned Cosmic for, mmmmm, 17 years now. Mayfair edition and best of the lot. In spite of a lack of air time the last few years my set has still seen enough to be ratty around the edges.

For entirely my own sake I packed it, downsizing it into the now empty Trias box which seemed just the right size.

We played 90 minutes of this just before the party moved off to a restaurant. Half a game of Cosmic is more fun than a whole load of other options and we had an absolute ball with six players.

(And after many years of ownership and minor complaint I at last got around to putting dots on the light blue tokens and destiny cards, and on the yellow tokens and destiny cards, to make them unambiguously distinct from the other blue and the orange.)

I picked this up in a math trade a few months ago. I've really enjoyed the couple of games we've had but my wife isn't so keen. As a last minute thought I dropped this into the side pocket.

This also didn't get played. Next time.

So far in my hand luggage I have:
Ca$h 'n Gun$, also containing Trias
Elfenland, also containing Fearsome Floors
Wits & Wagers, with a fair bit of air inside
Killer Bunnies and the Quest for the Magic Carrot, which would've been much smaller out of the box
The Trias box actually containing Cosmic Encounter
Wiz-War

The Order of the Stick game is a pretty big box, and fairly full. So the answer to "how the heck did you get that in there as well" is that I didn't. My friend owns this himself, and was the other game that occupied a lot of player time on the day. It too was a great deal of fun for the players but left not quite finished when we all traipsed out for dinner.

Really I didn't even pack particularly efficiently. For example I could've fitted eg Ra if I'd put the Killer Bunnies cards inside the Wits 'n Wages box.

Anyway, we all had a great time.
