A geeklist dealing with the relative time of things on Boardgamegeek.com and the effect of adding another zero

Ok, so I can't exactly do powers of ten since there's no where near that many items here in the database.

I can, however, add another zero.

This should give an interesting, if not entirely accurate, snapshot of things through the time-line of BGG.

Please feel free to add items that carry on the theme of "Powers of Ten" to this list.

GAME 1
Die Macher

First game listed in the database.

Interestingly enough it seems that this might not be the first game actually entered.

From Aldie:

Quote:
These are the first 10 games that were added to the database back in January 2000. These games are in the database in this order due to the old Metrogamers website reviews. These were games reviewed by either Derk Solko or Neil Carr back in the day.

Here are those games with database numbers after:

Dragonmaster - 2
Tal der Könige -4
Mare Mediterraneum -6
Samurai - 3
Cathedral - 7

Why would the chronology differ from the database? Who, but Aldie and Derk, can say for sure?
(well, I would guess some of you can but I sure as hell don't know...)

Comments:

Rating = 10: Play this game. Play this game a lot.

Rating = 10: Words fail me.

Rating = 10: It's so good, I'm shocked there haven't been imitators. Perfect example of theme informing design.

Rating = 1: In spite of its simple design, and being an "open system" game, it bores me to death... and having all the time it takes in my hands, I would ceartinly choose any other game or activity.

Rating = 1: Way too long for what it is, and no amount of skill can make up for being excluded from player deals

Rating = 1: Dull, tedious political adult game that goes on WAYYYYYYYYYYY TOO LOOOOOONNG.

GAME 10
Elfenland

Tenth game listed.

Comments:

Rating = 10: I just simply love it ... although I could probably agree that many games are better.

Rating = 10: Kind of like playing by yourself, but with others at the table. Decisions, decisions, decisions!

Rating = 10: I really enjoy this game. The forced interaction of players is great. Well balanced.

Rating = 1: bah!

Rating = 1: I don't mind games that don't give you many options -- in the right circumstances, those games can be fun. I cannot, however, tolerate a game that systematically nullifies all of your planning, all of your strategy arbitrarily. This is the only game I can think of that I would absoltely refuse to play again.

Rating = 1: I never want to see this game again.

GAME 99
Fortress America

OH NOES!

There doesn't seem to be a game listed in the 100 spot! How can this be?

Comments:

(there are no ratings of 1 for this game. lowest ratings shown)

Rating = 10: A great, great game. Perfectly balanced and both easy to learn and full of strategy. Quite possibly my favorite game.

Rating = 10: One of the most awesome games of all time. Don't let the plastic pieces fool you. It has tense game play and difficult decisons....and the theme is awesome.

Rating = 10: My favorite of Milton Bradley's Game Master series and one of my favorite games of all time. Nail-biting decisions on every turn. Even the set-up is critical: America can't defend too heavily forward, and the invaders must husband some heavy pieces for the final assault for that elusive 18th city. Just the slightest tweak will upset the balance of this game. If you enjoy "what-ifs" and don't mind the "light wargame" feel, you won't be disappointed by this.

Rating = 2: loads of fun but way to cheezy.

Rating = 2: This is not only the worst of the GameMaster series, but it is a lousy war game in and of itself. The game "balance" is too severly stacked in favor of the Americans. The pieces are contrived and the premise, boring. Not worth the time spent. Probably have logged 30+ hours in my teenage lifetime as one group after another tried to "convert" me. Finally, I cut my losses. For its time, I do like the oddly prophetic addition of "Saddam Hussein" to the box cover artwork; Not sure if that was intentional...

Rating = 2: Version with Saddam Hussein on cover. Almost as bad as the movie "Red Dawn".

Well, hell, you sold me with that last one!

OH NOES!

There doesn't seem to be a game listed in the 100 spot! How can this be?

Comments:

(no rating of 1 exists. lowest rating shown)

Rating = 10: 2-6 players

Rating = 9: I love this game. A three-race series is usually not enough for me. Plus, the reversible board gives you two, two, two games in one!

Rating = 3: Holy crap, I'm not one to bash a game entirely on its production values, but this is ridiculous. The board is awful, the box and insert are even more horrific, and the cards are thin, you-can-tell-they'll-wear out-quick kind. Comparing the quality against Daytona 500 is a joke. The game plays very similar to Daytona - players are dealt cards that move one or more cards. Players bid for cars. Top finishers get cash payouts. Top cash after three races wins. I don't like the switch cards - too gimmicky. Daytone 500 is cleaner and has far better production values. If you must have a Kramer race game, go get Daytona 500 and forget that this game exists.

Rating = 3: Far inferior to Daytona 500.

Rating = 10: It may seem a bit confusing to rate "Unpublished Prototype," but this is from the standpoint of "I always want to play and expect this will never change." The best game is always the one yet to come...

Comments on the game:

(there are no ratings of 1 for this game. the lowest are shown)

Rating = 10: Yes, we played for a long time, but it sure didn't feel like it. There was some downtime, of course, but with all the planning/strategizing/rethinking after another players turn, it wasn't noticable to me. I love this game!

Rating = 10: Great game on an obscure, but interesting subject. Loads of different strategies, coupled with a totally changeable gameboard means loads of fun and a different game every time. A keeper

Rating = 10: I love this game. The look, the theme, the gameplay, it all just clicks for me. 10 action points per turn seems overly generous until you realize that it's still not enough to acheive your goals. I also like how you can use others to acheive your own goals.

Rating = 3: Not for me...

Rating = 2.5: The game is practically synonymous with analysis paralysis. I'd rather watch TV--boring TV.

Rating = 6: Not much fun as a game, but OK as an activity to do with my just-turned-4 year old. Nicely teaches the beginnings of deductive reasoning.
The rating assumes playing with children. As a game against other adults, this is probably a 2.

GEEKLIST 10

Quote:
The Saint's fifteen favourite games.

This list is still under construction. I hope to have many detailed comments here, eventually. One of the main reasons for my creating this list is to give myself occasion to reflect on the reasons why I like the games listed here.

Fun:

The games that I rank among my favourites share a number of common characteristics. The most important of these is that my favourite games tend to be the ones that appeal most to the other people around the table. I can't enjoy a game unless the friends with whom I'm playing are having fun, themselves. For example, the first couple of times that I played Carcassonne, I enjoyed it, but thought that it was undistinguished, and anticipated that it wouldn't get played much. I was wrong, though; my copy of Carcassonne sees frequent use, and it is on this list because it is the one game that I know that has been introduced to dozens of gamers and non-gamers and was enjoyed by every one of them. It's fun to introduce a game to a group of people and to see them respond to it so favourably.

When I'm playing board games, I think of fun as a collective experience. The decision about whether a game is fun or not is largely (but not entirely) decided by group concensus.

Playability:

I'm going to call this characteristic "playability," though I realize that others may use that term differently. Playability has several aspects: Can the rules be explained quickly? Can a player who is new to the game play competitively the first or second time they play? Some people are willing to exert a fair amount of effort to play a complicated game, but most aren't. In comparison to Carcassonne, Stephensons Rocket is exactly the kind of game that would be my favourite if everyone else had exactly the same preferences that I do, but I derive way more enjoyment from my copy of Carcassonne than my copy of SR because I get to actually *play* Carcassonne; it's just way easier to find Carcassonne players than SR players.

Another aspect of playability is game duration. It's much harder to find time and opponents to play a long game than a short one. Finally, an important aspect of playability is flexibility: does the game demand a specific number of players, or is it flexible enough to permit play by groups of differing sizes?

Balancing playability and depth:

I do like games that present an intellectual challenge, though, so to become a favourite, a game needs to strike a balance between depth and playability. Returning to my earlier examples, Carcassonne has plenty of playability, and satisfactory depth, while SR is obviously deep, but doesn't possess the ease of play that would permit my non-gamer friends to get into it. I realize that Stephensons Rocket is probably not intended for non-gamers, so these comments are not intended to constitute a condemnation of that game. It's a very good game, but it's not a top-15 game.

Reiner Knizia does strike a remarkable balance between depth and playability in many of his other titles, though, and that accounts for the fact that all of the games in the top five positions on this list are his.

Games that are easy to play but which have little depth are readily available, and intellectually demanding games with poor playability are not so difficult to find, either. However, the really special games are those that are playable *and* deep. Those games are listed below.

Theme and aesthetics:

I don't care much about theme in games, and I don't think that the people with whom I play care much about theme either. This is probably another reason why there are so many Knizia titles on this list. For the sake of brevity, I often explain the rules of a game without explaining how those rules relate to the theme.

I do care a great deal about aesthetics. I like games to look good, and the tactile aspect of a boardgame is important to me. If a game is good enough to be on this list, though, it will have me thinking about game play, and not about the appearance of the pieces, so I don't think that aesthetics were a consideration in the creation of this list. I dislike the aesthetics of items 3, 4, and 5 on this list, but there they are.

This list is to provide those games that have units that would not have existed in the time frame of the game.
Are they any other games that fit this critera?

GEEKLIST 100000
??Unpublished Prototype??

The database does not go up to one hundred thousand geeklists as of this writing but who amongst us can doubt that it will?

I would wish I could be around to see what geeklist fits this slot some day.

Review for Die Macher by Derk

Quote:
When I first started to embrace the German game way of life (short playing times and fairly light gameplay), I was saddened that the epic game, taking place over many hours and burning up an extraordinary number of brain cells in the process, would be lost in a rapid-fire flurry of games with neat wooden bits. Then I heard about Die Macher. Everyone who ever talked about it said that it was a mammoth game that took forever to play and reduced your brain to a foul-smelling sludge as payment for the experience. Yet it embodied a lot of the better parts of the German games that I’m so fond of. It sounded like a winner to me. All I had to overcome then was the fifty-dollar price tag. I’ve never regretted the move.....

Review for Through the Desert by Derk

Quote:
This is another title by Reiner Knizia. This is one of the ‘tile trilogy,’ which is comprised of Euphrat & Tigris, Samurai, and Durch die Wueste. It was the first of these games that I collected, and clearly influenced my decision to acquire the rest of the games. The name means ‘Through the Desert.’ But if you mispronounce the ‘woo-sta’ part, I’ve heard it translates as ‘Through the Sausage.’ ....

Review for Manitou by ssmooth

Quote:
The idea in Manitou is that each player represents an American Indian tribe through a series of three buffalo hunts. In each hunt there are three separate "hunting grounds" with varying point values of buffalo to be won, dealt out at random from the buffalo cards.....

General comment on Lord of the Rings by "Roland" though it shows Boardgamegeek as the author. I suspect this is an artifact from "The Change".

Quote:
Just an addendum to my session report. The rules problems we encountered were:
1) When using the Ring to skip spaces do you action the space you land on? (The answer is Yes)
2) Do you shuffle the deck at the end of each scenario or when the deck is exhausted? (The answer is that you shuffle at the the end of each scenario)

We guessed right on the first one, and wrong on the second, but the fact was that we shouldn't have had to guess on such basic issues, both of which have a major impact on the game.

The only good things to come out of it was that in the hair-pulling effort to find the answers on the net I found this cool website, and as a result bought Carcassonne which has gone down a storm!

Cheers,
Roland

Session report for Corsairs from an unkown author.

Probably for the best because the following quote is the entirety of the thing...

Quote:
Coursairs x2 - I didn't get to play this, but everyone else seemed to really like it; I'm hoping to play it tonight.

I'm off to Lobster Trap - I expect I will see some of you there!

Thanks... I guess...
