Uwe Rosenberg is one of the hottest designers right now, with his #1 success Agricola, and the successful release of Le Havre the very next year. He appears to be entering a new phase of game design, by moving to the more meatier euro games, after an initial phase that included lighter card games, Bohnanza being the most outstanding example. In this list, we take a journey back through time, to see what we can find out about the man and his games, and try to learn what we can expect from him in the future.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the games on this list, and draw your own conclusions about the man and his games. My own conclusions are listed in item #22 of the list, at the end of our journey through time.

His latest darling. Rosenberg himself concedes that Le Havre has a narrower target audience than Agricola, so it isn't destined to have quite the same level of same success as its predecessor, but gamers who do like this kind of game appear to be enjoying it a lot.

Owned by less than 20 BGG users, this is about finding good first and family names for your unborn children, that are liked by your gaming partners as well. Appears geared to women, and it's questionable that the jokes with the names can support good gameplay.

Rosenberg really hit the jackpot for the first time with this game, as it proved to be a real bonanza for him!

It also spawned many expansions, and other Bohnanza type games. Not including expansions or other minor variations on the Bohnanza gameplay concept, mention can be made of the following stand-alone games: Space Beans (1999), Bean Trader (2002), Rabohnzel (2005)

The Man

So what have we learned about Mr. Uwe Rosenberg?

1. He first appeared on the scene as a game designer in 1992.

2. In his first phase of game design, he specialized in lighter card games.

3. His card games tend to have one or more of the following elements: strong interactive components such as bluffing; a trivia style suitable for parties or social groups; a very strong memorization component.

4. In most cases, his card games have very unique mechanics and ideas.

5. He struck gold with Bohnanza in 1998, and its myriad of subsequent expansions

6. His only other real successes in the card game genre were Mamma Mia (1999), Klunker (2000), and Babel (2000).

7. Most of his other releases are quite obscure and inferior, with possible exceptions being the trick taking game Schnäppchen Jagd (1998) and the set collection game Nottingham (2006). These five games are the places to begin if you're looking to expand your Rosenberg collection of card games beyond Bohnanza.

8. Rosenberg found his greatest success when he applied his novel card game mechanics to the concept of worker placement games in 2007, by developing a heavier euro game, his magnus opus Agricola, which was closely followed in 2008 by another meaty game, Le Havre.

9. Rosenberg is currently working on three "heavier" games (listed below).

By entering the realm of meatier games, it appears that Rosenberg has entered into a new phase of game design, where he is achieving new heights of success, and he may yet prove to be one of the hot designers of the future!
