For months - and I mean many months - my wife and I have talked about trying to get a monthly games day started. Being the highly motivated go-getters that we are, though, we never quite got around to it. Until last month, that is. We finally got around to just picking a date and sent out Evites to everyone, then sat back and waited to see who would come. The first 3 RSVPs were negative, with all saying that was the ONE day they had booked. soblue Fortunately, the next few were positive, so it was looking like we'd have at least 6 people, which was a relief. We ended up with quite a few: My wife and I, Dan, Steve & Julie, John & Lisa, Cathy, Ed, Evan & Anne, Stephen & Francie, Jay & Krystal, and I think that's it. So 15 people.

The plan was to start around noon on Saturday and go until midnight, although both my wife and I doubted that anyone would show up until early evening, but we weren't sure how it would work out. As it turned out, one person turned up at 2:30, and about 6 more turned up around 4:30 or 5, with the balance trickling in after that.

The game of the evening was definitely Pandemic. Dan called around 1pm asking if I had it. It was the first game we played when he got there at 2:30. Steve and Julie showed up and with them was Pandemic. Stephen and Francie showed up and with them was Pandemic. I personally played 3 games (all losses), and I think it's safe to say there were 4-6 other plays of the game in the evening. Everyone who showed up wanted to play.

Some lessons learned from this one: we need 2 more folding chairs for sure, and perhaps one more 6' table, although I'm not entirely sure it'll fit in the living room. Must measure.... More people brought food than expected (NICE!), so have extra paper plates, napkins, etc., and HAVE PLASTIC CUPS! I have no idea how I missed that one, but somehow, I did.shake

The following (finally!) is the list of the games that were played.

The first game of the day. My wife, son, and I played around 1:30, since no one else had shown up. I liked it, but I think I'll like it more with more than 3 players. The battle phase didn't affect any of us, and the scores ended close. My wife and I were tied (me with 1 good, giving me the win), with Maxwell just 2 or 3 points behind.

Dan showed up in the middle of Kingsburg, and once we were done, my wife had some running around to do dealing with my daughter, so Dan and I busted out Roma while we waited for her to get back to play Pandemic. Dan utterly crushed me. I started behind, and I stayed behind. It was one of those defeats that wasn't just bitter, it was humiliating.

By far and away, the most played game of the evening. I played when Dan showed up. Then I took a break when Steve, Julie, John, and Lisa showed up to get them set up with Steve's copy of Pandemic and give them a runthrough. Finished my game, and Evan and Anne showed up and wanted to try, so we set it up again. We died before Dan even got a turn 2 with an ugly triangle of outbreak horror. Maybe we did something wrong, but it was funny. So we tried one more time. All losses.

I know that Dan played again with Jay and Krystal. I know another game was played by Stephen, Francie, Dan, and my son. And I think that may have been it. The game involving my son was the only win of the evening, as I think we were starting to figure it out.

While we were finishing up my last game of Pandemic, John, Lisa, Steve, Julie, and Brigetta (my lovely wife) grabbed this one. I hadn't even played this one out of my collection yet! I'll admit - it stung a bit, but I bit back the tears and let it go. Midway through their game there was a lot - I mean A LOT - of laughing. I think the game lends itself to puns and double entendre, and it sounded like they all had a great time.

After finishing up Pandemic, and getting the next group going on it, I took Evan, Anne, and Ed and grabbed an empty card table and Dominion. Anne won the day solidly - my grab money and VPs strategy just didn't quite work out. So far, I do not see Dominion as being a strong game for me, but I really enjoy it. I can't put my finger on it, but something just feels good with Dominion. Tingly, even...

Once we were done, Brigetta, Jay, Krystal, and maybe someone else grabbed it and played 2 more games. Jay is a former M:tG addict, so I hope I'm not helping cause any kind of relapse....

Stephen and Francie had shown up at this point, with Pandemic, Wasabi!, and Duck! Duck! Go! With no other opponents, they broke out the duck game and played at one end of the Pandemic table. I only know that at one point Stephen was behind - by a lot.

Steve, Julie, John, and Lisa had never played Galaxy Trucker, so Brigetta sat down to teach them and off they went. I honestly have no idea what happened during the game, but I heard that Lisa wasn't a huge fan, her "inability to accept and embrace failure" being cited as the primary suspect.

While games of Dominion, Pandemic, and Galaxy Trucker were going on, Stephen taught Francie, Cathy, Ed, and me Wasabi! First off, the game has B-E-A-UTIFUL components, I mean REALLY top notch. My two complaints were that the board with its stripy pattern made me a little dizzy, and that once semi-full of tiles, it was hard to figure out what was where, since it ended up being very busy looking. The game itself was decent - it felt really random, though, and I question how much depth there is to the game. I'll probably buy it for the bad ass bowls and wasabi cubes, though!

This was the final game of the night for me. The women were all talking kids and diseases, and John was waiting on Lisa, so he picked it up to look at it, and I jumped on the opportunity to play again. I remembered really liking it when I first got it. We played a quick game, and I beat him, narrowly, 5-4. It was fun, but not as fun as I remembered, although it could have been the hour. Once that was done, there was some last minute visiting, and the rest of the company left. I was tired, but my son, high off his Pandemic win, wanted to play one more game, so he and I taught him Duell and we played a couple of games, me winning 5-1 and a VERY close 5-4 win.
