I think it's time for some best-of geeklists for 2008 so I'll kick this off. The CSR awards are IMO the definitive awards for wargaming but those break down the games by historical era. The Golden Geek is kind of a strange wargaming award and only paying members can vote. So I'll break down this years wargames by unit/map scale in whatever period of history you'd care to post and we'll see which one comes out on top for these geeklists, no awards given, just a people's choice kind of deal.

Post your favorite game released in 2008 in this particular scale. If someone has beaten you to your favorite in this scale thumb that particular game. If you think any expansion (standalone or otherwise) was really, really good I don't see any harm in posting it.I'll post a geeklist for three different scales. After about a week I will post a seperate geeklist with the winners.

Tactical-level geeklist: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/37456

Operational-level geeklist: http://boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/37458

Winners have been selected

Wikipedia says:

Quote:
Strategic military units are typically division, corps, or army-sized, and they are rated based upon raw strength. At this scale, economic production and diplomacy are significant. The simulation typically involves all branches, and often the entire forces of the nations involved, and covers entire wars or long campaigns

Thinking about this scale makes me want to invade Taiwan...

This is a hypothetical war but it's sure as hell a "potential" conflict. The only hypothetical that would be more potential than RDR would be India/Pakistan 2009. The units in RDR are mostly naval and air but it is quite a big theater of operations. You can fight a second Korean War and involve nations from all over the world. There are some great random events in this game and it is a lot of fun.

A game the covers all of the seven years war at the strategic level. While it has a big rulebook, which has a bunch of holes in it (mostly fixed by errata), once its on the table the game flows pretty smoothly Combat is well done in that with the exception of overruns, odds are not the critical issue. A bigger force will generally do more damage, and it it ultimately morale that makes or breaks forces.

The game shows well the difficulty of the Prussians making major plans without Frederick involved, and treasury and Monarchial Will balance practical considerations against just going out and fighting a war. Add in supply raids and foraging and devastation and cards for activation/supply and/or events and a Fog of War element, and you have a game that is likely to have a lot of tension and likely to never play the same way twice.

I don't know if this qualifies as it is a 3rd edition and I don't know if it is my favourite, but if it qualifies it derserves consideration. A Strategic level multiplayer game about the wars of Alexandrian Succession. Certainly an interesting game with plenty of tension. I worry about the swings in the game, I'd prefer something more incremental, but still it is fun to play and quite easy with only 16 pages of rules.

The Eastern Front with less than 40 counters on the board. So far I have played the Barbarossa scenario several times. Has an excellent feel for that campaign. Game also has a campaign game and 3 other scenarios.

Reminds me of the wargames of my youth. A "puzzle" game where exact placement of your units and a knowledge of the rules (8 pages plus scenarios and notes) have to be used to win a tense contest.

The use of cards as an economic/event system also prevents players from knowing the exact capabilities of their opponents.

The Spanish Civil War in ten turns or less, with militias, leaders, tanks, planes and foreign volunteers.

Stylish graphics and high production values that includes challenging and varied game play; captures the flavour and challenges of the Spanish Civil War with the cards adding enough variation in game events to generate high replayability. The game is card assisted rather than card driven.

Note: Spanish edition published in 2007, English version in 2008.

Fantastic follow-on to Paths of Glory. Even deeper and more varied than that classic. Easily the best strategic wargame I've played that was released in '08. Time will tell if PuG can garner the same status as PoG.

Well, this is my favorite strategic ameritrash wargame with a WW II theme. I really love this, eventhough it has little to do with history.

Great bits, great new rules, great multiplayer, great fun!
