We had a solid turnout for the lastgame day of the year and played some great games. It has been a great year of gaming and I am looking forward to 2009 and another great year of games and friends. Todd had a dominating day, setting our all-time high for Puerto Rico and winning all 5 games he played. Attendees today were: Nick, Krista, Ken, David, Ross, Todd, Brian P, Kevin, Sean, Steven (1st Time), and myself.

Gamer of the Month: Todd McCorkle 3.0 Rating

We set down to play this with 5 originally, but two others showed up, so we ended up with just three. I’m glad we played, since I have played in several months, but it is much better of a game with 5 players. I was able to get the connections throughout the game, scoring 7 and 8 points off those alone the last two rounds. In the end, it was not as close as it started out to me, thanks to my connects at 9 points worth of cards in the end game.

Right after Taj Mahal, we got to pull out another one that has not hit the table in a while! El Grande was a brand new experience for both Brian and Sean, but Sean especially took to the game quickly. It was extremely close all the way through, but Sean grabbed the big mobile scorecard and put it in Galacia, his home territory. He was able to score that 3 times and in the end was able to pass us all.

Oregon is probably the most often played game of the year, coming out it seems almost every game day. It came out again today, with David getting the victory.

Brian needed to leave within 1 ½ hours, so instead of Perikles we pulled this one out. Now neither Brian or Sean had played previously and despite warnings before hand about how good a Jester was, I was able to purchase the first two jesters for a total of $1100 combined. This set up my favorite strategy of building no buildings and grabbing a lot of profession cards. Sean ended up building a ton of buildings, but was unable to complete a work the last two turns, which despite his filled up board was not enough. Brian did a middling strategy and had two prestige cards, but still ended up short.

Nick got a chance to play his 3 favorite games today in RRT, In the Year of the Dragon, and Agricola. I do not know what everyone else did, but I do know that Nick got both the NY to Chicago and the NY to KC major lines, but in the end had too much debt to take the victory.

Before Sean had to leave, we played the ever-popular Ra! Todd got all 8 monuments and 10 river tiles, I was able to build 4 pyramids of one kind, Ross did well in pharaohs, while both Ken & Sean had learning games.

Today was the most amazing game of Puerto Rico ever! But only if you were Todd. He scored an amazing 71 points for the victory. I am not sure how it happened exactly, but he had 7 corn fields, 46 shipping points, and the Customs House (giving 1 point for every 4 victory point chips). Anyways, despite my somewhat early library and a normally respectable scoring by David and I, Todd dominated. Steve, who came for the first time, stepped in deep playing Puerto Rico as his first real Euro.

Two games were played of this using the drafting variation. I know the first game that Nick got the Wet Nurse and the Brush Collector, which the last time we had played I was able to use for a deadly combo. It worked well for Nick, but the problem was that he was playing the master of Agricola, Ross “I Never Lose Agricola” Gerke.

Ross never loses Agricola and I never win Tichu. That is just the way life is and there is not anything I can do about it. David and I played a really conservative strategy, until he called our first Tichu, in which we set. Then, when Steven and Ross only had 45 more points to go (we were playing to 800), I called a grand Tichu to solidify our throbbing.

We finished up the night with three games of Dominion, the first two with the basic set up and the last two randomly set up. I really like this game, and will probably be putting it on my buy list. It plays quick, has good decisions, and seemingly endless strategies. I tried mining a lot the first two games, which was ok, but then the last game had no mines in it, so I tried drawing as many cards as possible.
